Lesson 3: Career Interview OR Job Shadow

Job Shadow Notes

● Have to have patience and talk slow when taking a resident’s order. Lots of them
have problems hearing and processing
● Stay busy
● Have to be able to multitask while not appearing stressed out because residents
will pick up on it
● Being kind and welcoming is important
● Residents see servers most of their day, give them quality service
● Never pick up a resident when they fall, get immediate help. If you try to pick
them up and they hurt themselves even more liability is on you and the company
● The residents ask a lot of questions. Be prepared to answer them
● Remembering little things about residents make their day
Career Interview/Job Shadow Reflection

1. Who did you interview/job shadow? What is their name, career title, and
contact information? How do you know this person?

I job shadowed a family friend named Sophia. She is a dining room

coordinator and part time server at a retirement community in La Mesa.

2. What does a typical day look like in this career?

A typical day starts a little before 10. She needs to make sure all the tables are set.
And that there is enough silverware for all the residents. Preparing the dining room,
cleaning the dining room afterwards and making sure all residents are satisfied with
their meal and environment are key to Sophia’s position.

3. What skills and abilities do you need to succeed in this career?

Need to be able to multitask, have patience, be quick on your feet. Also have to be
able to remember people's orders or small things they ask for because that small thing
they ask for that might slip your mind could make their whole meal.

4. What are some facts you learned about this career that you were unaware of
prior to this experience?
There are a lot of factors that add up to being satisfied with the outcome of a meal.

5. Which aspects of this career are appealing to you? Explain.

I think I enjoy catering to people. I’m a people pleaser. I enjoy making others happy.

6. Which aspects of this career are not appealing to you? Explain.

It must get frustrating working with other employees who don’t work up to the standard
of their position. That’d irritate me real bad.

7. How does this career compare to your strengths, interests, and values? Is it a
good fit for you? Explain.

I’m very fast-pace when on my feet so I think that would be a strength. Working at
a retirement home requires a lot of caring and kindness which I think I wouldn’t
have a problem providing.

8. What would you need to do to prepare for a job in this field?

I’d need to buy some work pants and work shoes first. Requirements for this specific
job are black dickies work pants and black non-slip shoes.

9. How has this experience influenced your career goals?

I think this has definitely gave me an insight on professionalism and what comes with
that.
