ABE051: Thermodynamics and heat transfer

Second Major Exam Part II

General Instruction: Show your COMPLETE solutions.

1. Ninety kilojoules is heat are added to a tank of air (m=2.8kg). The initial temperature of the air is
26°C. The temperature of the surroundings is 15°C. Determine the final temperature of air after
heat addition and the change in entropy of the system. (5 pts)
2. An engine operating in a Carnot cycle produces 54kJ of work. The engine operates between 500°C
and 32°C. Determine the amount of heat rejected and the thermal efficiency of the system. (5pts)
3. A reversed Carnot cycle has a refrigerating COP of 4. (a) what is the ratio TH/TL? (b) If the work is
6kW, what will be the maximum refrigerating effect (QL) in kJ/min and tons (1 ton = 211kJ/min)?
(c) If this cycle is used for heating, determine the COP (β’) and heating effect (QH). (10 pts)
4. Compression starts in an air-standard Brayton Cycle at 103 kPa and 26°C. The compression ratio
is 8 to 1. The maximum temperature is 2200K. Determine the maximum pressure, amount of heat
added, thermal efficiency, and the mean effective pressure. (20pts)
5. An ideal air-standard Diesel engine operating on 227 g air is supplied with 317 kJ of heat per cycle.
Initially at 97.91kPaa and 48.9°C, air is entropically compressed to 3930 kPaa. Determine (a) the
compression ratio, (b) percentage clearance, (c) cut-off ratio, (d) W, (e) thermal efficiency, and (f)
the mean effective pressure. (20pts)
