Name:…………………………………. Reg. NO.:………………………………..

Instructor: Dr. Khalid Rahman Section: ______________________

29th April 2021 Time: 99 mins (Solution)

Total: 25 marks 20 mins (Uploading)

INSTRUCTIONS
1. This is an open book on-line exam. To receive credit for a problem, you must show all the working. Answers without
working will be given ZERO credit.

2. Asking questions during exams on the post of ME 213 is strictly prohibited. Student queries may be entertained only
through personal chats in MS teams only.
3. As per instructions of COE, it is the responsibility of the student to keep more than one internet connection
(cellular/cabled/WIFI) etc. for downloading and uploading the paper.
4. All the students must remain live on MS teams with your camera on. The invigilators may ask any random student
to turn on his camera and microphone. Failure to do so will lead to cancelling of online exam and the institute SOP
will be followed for the retake of final exam.
5. Students have to solve/answer the questions using blank paper at their end. They must write name and Reg#. on
each page they use.
6. Solution time is 99 mins. Additional 20 mins is to be given to students for issues such as internet connectivity, load
shedding, uploading issues on MS teams.
7. No paper will be accepted whatsoever after 119 mins (i.e. 3:59 pm) even if it is turned in a few seconds late.
Technically you should start uploading your exam paper after 99 mins (i.e. 3:39 pm).
8. Make pdf file (not to exceed 10MB) for each question separately and upload them at the designated MS Teams
sections. It is the responsibility of student to make sure that the scan/image is readable.
9. All the students are allowed to consult class notes, books etc. at their own. Formula sheets may be provided
depending on the type of question(s).
10. Any violation of the above mentioned will lead to cancellation of paper.

1. The steel bars BE and AD each have a 6 mm x
18 mm cross-section. Knowing that E = 200
GPa, the 3.2 kN force caused point C to deflect
to the right. Using α = 11.7 x 10-6 /℃, determine
(a) the overall change in temperature that causes
point C to return to its original position, (b) the
corresponding total deflection of points A and
B. (10 marks) (CLO_1, PLO_1, C3)

2. Two solid shafts are connected by gear as shown

in figure. The angle of rotation of end A of the
gear and shaft system shown must not be exceed
as per given condition (refer to table below).
Knowing that shaft is made of material for which
τallowble = 150 MPa, G = 75 GPa for Section-
A’s students and τallowble = 230 MPa, G = 27
GPa for Section-B’s students, determine the
largest torque T can be safely applied at end A.
Radius of gear B = 80 mm and radius of gear
C = 240 mm) (10 marks) (CLO_1, PLO_1, C3)
Registration Number Condition Angle of Twist
2019XYZ or 2018XYZ or 2017WYZ X.YZ°
20190YZ or 20180YZ or 20170YZ Y.Z0°
201900Z or 201800Z or 201700Z Z.00°

3. A 30-mm-diameter steel rod is formed

into a machine part with the shape shown
in figure. A load of P = 2500 N is applied
to the ends of the part. If the allowable
normal stress is limited to 40 MPa, what
is the maximum eccentricity e that may be
used for the part? (5 marks) (CLO_1, PLO_1, C3)

4. If the beam (shown in figure) is made from a material having

an allowable tensile and compressive stress of (σallow)Tensile
= 125 MPa and (σallow)Compressive = 150 MPa respectively,
determine the maximum allowable internal moment M that
can be applied to the beam. (5 marks) (CLO_1, PLO_1, C3)
