Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh


First of all I would like to express our gratefulness to Allah SWT who has given health,
thought and more spirit to make and arrange this module in PPG DALJAB 2021. In doing this,
there are difficulties nevertheless I tried to do the best so that I can finish the module which I
named “Smart and Active Students for the eighth grade”.
This module is created as the task of PPG DALJAB 2021 for English teachers in learning
activity. This module also can make the students to understand the materials easier, since it gives
explanation and more examples about the materials especially about “advertisement”.
I would like to say thanking to everybody who has helped me in arrangement of this

A. INTRODUCTION
1. Short Description
This module entitled “smart and active students” was done to increase students’ English
capability especially in advertisement. It means to amuse or persuade readers to be
interested with the goods/products.
In this module we can learn advertisement texts in spoken and written. These materials
consist of four Learning Activities (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and each
activity formatted by learning outcomes, Learning materials, which explain about
definition, generic structure, social function, and language features with learning references
in tasks. Then, they are accompanied by discussion forum, summary, reflection, formative
test, references, and answer keys.
2. Relevances
This module relevances with other English for Personal Communications such as personal
letter, invitation, and announcement.
3. Learning Guide
In this module, students/readers will get guide in learning definition, social function,
generic structures and language features. Explanation in this module is more detailed so
that does not need explanation from teachers directly again.

In achieving the goals of learning this module, you need to do these:

a. Pre-activity: We need to build background knowledge about advertisement. It will help


us to have ideas about short functional texts. You should figure out some more
information about advertisement from encyclopedia or internet.

b. Main Activity: Many activities guide you in understanding and enjoyment while you
are comprehending the materials about advertisements.

 You can write notes while learning

 Identify series of advertisement sample

 Determine the messages contained in advertisements

 Find factual information from a variety of advertisements

c. Post-Activity: Questioning, Discussion, Creating, and Presenting.

 Questioning: Questioning activities encourage you to think about and respond to


the information and ideas about advertisements.

 Discussion: Discussion is exchanging ideas out loud. The aim is to explore some
ideas, to learn something new or gain a different perspective by pooling the
information or insights that more than one person can give.

 Creating: Making your own advertisements.

 Presenting your created advertisements.

4. Basic Competence

a. Determining and differentiating the social functions, text structure, and linguistic elements of
several special texts in the form of advertisements by providing information about schools
according to the context of their use.

b. Determining of meaning contextually related to social functions, generic structure and


language features of the advertising text (advertisement).

c. Creating/writing about simple advertising text related to daily life or school activities with

due regard to social functions, text structure and linguistic elements correctly and in context

1. Learning outcomes
After learning all materials of this module, you are guided and conducted to identify,
analyze and create your own advertisement texts based on definition, social function,
generic structures, and language features, which are presented in written and images.

To uphold and apply religious values, moral values, ethical values, personal and
social values (honesty, discipline, accountability, independence), care and respect for
differences and diversity, tolerance, peace, collaboration, and nationalism.

b. Knowledge

To analyze the social functions, text structures, and lexico-grammatical features of


advertisements in regard to the contexts of situation.

c. Skill

After learning this chapter, you are expected to be able to:

 understand a series of advertisement

 contrast the social functions of advertisements based on the context of situation,


the target readers, the points of interests or importance.

 contrast the difference among the types of advertisement.

 understand the language features of advertisement.

 construct advertisements.
