13. When was the infographic updated?
14. Which type of test has more total tests done?
15. Are there more people who recovered among the suspected cases?

What’s In

Imagine your mother, who forgot her reading glasses, needs to read a long text
message. She handed her mobile phone then asks you to simply tell her what the
message is all about. After reading the long text message, you try to make sense of

4
what was written and do what your mother has told you to do – tell her simply what
the message is all about.
Thinking about it, were you really able to get the main thought of the text message
and relayed it to your mother correctly? If you did, then you have fully comprehended
the content of what you have read. You have good reading comprehension skills.

Reading comprehension does not always require you to read the entire text of a
reading material. It depends on your purpose for reading. This then relates to the
concept of reading styles or reading strategies.

In this module, you will be learning about two reading styles – scanning and
skimming. These will be discussed in detail on the following part of this module.
What you first need to note is that both scanning and skimming are reading skills that
you employ in intensive reading as well.

As the name implies, intensive reading puts emphasis on deconstructing texts to get
its central idea. This is done when you want to fully comprehend what a text is all
about. Intensive reading also involves extracting particular details either from linear
texts such as paragraphs or non-linear texts like infographics or graphs.

What’s New
Activity : The Definitions Please!
Fill in with vowels the boxes of each word to unlock the meaning of scanning
and skimming. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

5
What’s In It
When you scan, you only look for specific information without reading everything.
Scanning allows you to find details and locate facts by focusing on the information
that you only need to find. It uses keywords to target particular facts or data.
Scanning is also useful when reading infographics. You also employ scanning when
you only want to look for particular data presented probably on a graph or a chart.

When you skim, you do not read the whole text word for word. Skimming is done by
reading a page or pages and paying attention to word cues such as the title,
heading, or even the first sentence of a paragraph. For instance, if your teacher
assigned you to get the main idea of a magazine article, then you purposely read its
title first to get a bird's eye view of what it is all about. If the article is a bit long, you
proceed to reading the first sentence of each paragraph just to get a preview of its
content.

Both scanning and skimming are reading techniques that also improve your ability to
read quickly. In other words, speed reading. Isn’t it that there are times when you
look for something particularly on your Facebook page, you scroll up and down on a
somewhat speedy manner? You are doing a quick scan. On the other hand, if you’re
a fan of reading stories in Wattpad, you rapidly read a sequence of story titles written
on cover pages and whatever catches your interest is the story you would most likely
read. You are doing a quick skim.

What’s More

Activity 1: Same or Different?

Using the Venn diagram, where do you think should these sentences be
appropriately placed?

1. It is to read a text
speedily.

2. It is to search for a
particular data or
idea.

main thought or
topic of the text.

6
Activity 2: Speed Test!
2.1. First, read the question below. Then, skim the infographic found on this page.
Time yourself to see how long it will take you to answer the question. For
comparison, let your classmate or other members of your family do this as well.

2.2. Start with the first question, then go back to looking at the infographic and scan
for the answer. Do this with the other questions that follows. Time yourself while
answering the questions from the first to the last.

What I Can Do
Here is an online article written by Kaye Lara at thesummitexpress.com posted on
November 8, 2017. After intensively reading the article, apply scanning and
skimming as you answer the following questions.

Filipino Colloquial Words: How Lodis Gave Werpa to Ordinary Talk

‘Lodi ka talaga orb! Petmalu! More werpa to you!’

Today’s Filipino social media is teeming with these words. Millennials, our ‘tatis and
totis’, and even the ‘damatans’ are familiar with this trend. But what, exactly, do these
mean and why are they so popular these days? How can we be lodis with werpas to
become petmalu?

8
1. Lodi ‘Lodi’ is the reversed form of ‘Idol’. It is used to address celebrities or a familiar
person who did something impressive.
2. Petmalu
‘Petmalu’ is the reversed form of ‘Malupet’, which in Filipino slang means amazing,
incredible, or simply cool.
3. Werpa
Based from how PowerPoint was changed to WerpaPoint, ‘Werpa’ is the reverse of
‘Pawer’, which is how some Filipinos pronounce ‘Power’. It is used to give support to
someone.

While these three are the top frequently used reverse words nowadays, some other
notable slang terms are ‘Orb’ for ‘Bro’, ‘Rapsa’ for ‘Sarap’ or delicious, and ‘Matsala’
for‘Salamat’ or thanks.
Now that we’ve got the meanings out of the way, why exactly are these so trending
today? Where in the world did these terms emerge from?

Root of the Trend

It all started within the Facebook group called What’s Your Ulam, Pare (WYUP). As
their description states, they are a group focused on daily food experiences. Members
mainly post photos of their food-for-the-day which ranges from picturesque gourmet
dishes to plainly silly ones snapped for comedic purposes.
They started seven months ago, but only gained much online traction when the
millennial members started to very much appreciate the slang terms used by the older
members. Words like lodi, petmalu, and werpa flooded the comments sections. And soon
enough, the colloquial words began to spread like wildfire through Filipino social media,
like how we see them today.
However, while the trend today is mainly credited to the group, Reddit Philippines’
imaginelyrics begs to differ. According to the user, the practice of reversing Filipino
words has been around since the 90s. In the comments section, another user added that it
goes beyond the 90s. And, true enough, the words astig (tigas or badass), ermat/erpat
(mater/pater or mother/father), and olats (talo or lose) have been around even before lodi,
petmalu, and werpa were trending.
So, now that we know that the Filipino language is a colorful and ever-expanding one,
how should we receive this trend?
While this lodi, petmalu, and werpa trend is receiving mixed reactions from the
netizens – quite a number of which are negative responses – it is important to keep in
mind that it is a natural tendency for people to adapt their language. As a study by Luke
Strongman points out, identity is created from language to adapt to different situations.
This trend is no exception, as some millennials find amusement in expressing themselves
through saying these new colloquial terms.
Whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing depends on each person. Marcelo H. del Pilar,
however, seemed to think it is. More werpa, mga petmalung lodi!

9
Activity 1: Scanning for specific information
Scan the article to locate the specific information asked below.
_______________ 1. This slang is the reversed form of petmalu. _______________
2. This reversed word means to give support.
_______________ 3. Matsala is the reversed form of this word.
_______________ 4. What Facebook group started the trend of reversed words?
_______________ 5. True or False: The trend of reversing words happens because
some people find it amusing to express themselves through saying these terms.

Activity 2: Skimming for the main idea

Below are extracts from the newspaper article you have read. Skim over it and
answer the following questions.

1. What is suggested by the headline/title of the newspaper article?

A. that the article will discuss words used by Filipinos specifically on colloquials
B. that the article will talk about people who become lodis of the Filipino people
C. that the article will dwell on colonizers of the Filipino people
D. that the article will tackle giving power to ordinary Filipino citizens

2. What is the central idea of the paragraph?

A. that a lot of people do not like using words like lodi and petmalu
B. that it is natural for people, especially the millenials, to follow the trend of using a
language
C. that words like werpa and petmalu are words only used by millenials
D. that the identity of the Filipino becomes lost when people started using colloquials
and slangs

Additional Activity
Activity: A Sales Pitch
A ‘sales pitch’ is when you try to persuade someone to buy something. You do this
by using persuasive words to convince a person that your ‘pitch’ or what you have
written is believable and interesting.
Now, here is the scenario. Your mother cooks merienda like sandwiches and pasta
on a small booth outside your house. However, she does not have many customers.
So, you decided to help her gain more customers by advertising her snack foods
online. For you to do this, you need to provide a short description of what your

12
mother is selling using a short paragraph. Thus, a ‘sales pitch’ to be posted on your
Facebook page. What would be the text of your ‘sales pitch’? Remember that the
people who will scroll over your Facebook page are only scanning and skimming so
the manner of writing your ‘sales pitch’ greatly matters.
Be guided by these questions to help you in crafting your ‘sales pitch’.

1. What will be a ‘catchy’ title for my Facebook post?

2. How will I introduce my mother’s snack foods on the first sentence of my
paragraph?
3. What are the keywords that I will use in my one-paragraph ‘sales pitch’ so that
my Facebook post readers can easily know the details of what I am selling?
