What I Need to Know

This module provides an understanding of Earth’s uniqueness in the Solar System. It

will help you determine the characteristics of planets that are most favorable for habitability
by helping you recognize that there is a wide variety of conditions on Earth that have life, so
there could be planets that are very different from Earth that still have some habitable
regions. Humans would not survive at the bottom of the ocean, but there are many
organisms that thrive there. Some organisms use sulfur compounds for respiration, instead
of oxygen; humans would die without oxygen.
In this module you will be provided with activities that will test your prior knowledge,
stimulate your interest and elevate your understanding and level of excitement in the
different activities so that you will learn the various conditions necessary to support life on
the planet.
At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Recognize the difference in the physical and chemical properties between the
Earth
and its neighboring planets; and
2. Identify the factors that allow a planet to support life.

By the way, always remember to use a separate sheet of paper for you to write your
answers on the different activities presented in this learning module. DO NOT
ANSWER here directly.
Now, here is an outline of the different parts of your learning module. The
descriptions will guide you on what to expect on each part of the module.

What’s In
Much of what we know about the Earth as part of a planetary system has been discovered
only in the past few centuries. We've come a long way from imagining the Earth as the
center of the universe to understanding its meager position in the solar system.
Earth, as scientists discovered, is well equipped as a planet and ideally placed in our
solar system and galaxy to support life as we know it. The product of some 4.6 billion years
of cosmic construction, our planet is flush with life thanks to a fortuitous set of conditions.
During your early Sciences, you have learned that all planets in the solar system
share the same origin with Earth—as dust particles that combined through accretion. How
come Earth, as far as we know, is the only planet that can sustain life?

What’s New
Activity : 4 pics – 1 word
Direction: Use the images to answer the hidden words.

4
What’s In It

Recall that in your lower Science subjects, you have learned that Earth is the
only planet in the universe known to possess life. The planet boasts several million species
of life, living in habitats ranging from the bottom of the deepest ocean to a few miles into the
atmosphere. What really makes it different from the others? Let’s get to know!

A special planet: the habitable Earth

Venus, Mars and Earth, three out of the four inner or ‘rocky’ planets of the Solar
System, have a lot in common – a solid surface you could walk on, a comparable surface
composition, an atmosphere and a weather system.

Venus, Earth, and Mars are part of the inner terrestrial or "rocky" planets. Their
composition and densities are not too different from each other. Venus is considered to be
the Earth's twin planet. It has a very similar size and mass with the Earth. Mars is about
half the Earth's size. Orbital period and velocity are related to the planet's distance from the
sun. Among the three planet, Venus is the nearest and Mars is the farthest from the Sun.
The Rotational speed of Earth and Mars are very similar however for Venus, it is extremely
slow. Amongst the three planet , there is an abundance of liquid water on Earth, hence the
blue color. The Earth is a habitable planet/

5
Table 1. Venus, Earth, MarsComparison(modified(from(http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/)planetary/factsheet/)

Our Earth being the only habitable planet in the solar system is the only place in the
universe that can support life. It is a modest-sized planet that orbits an average star, the sun.
Life on Earth is ubiquitous; it is found in boiling mud pots and hot springs, in the deep
oceans and even under the Antartic ice sheet. Many continental areas are too steep, too
high or too cold for humans to inhabit. Yet Earth is hospitable to life.

Earth’s characteristics to support life

Earth is well equipped as a planet and ideally placed in our solar system and galaxy
to support life as we know it. The product of some 4.6 billion years of cosmic construction,
our planet is flush with life thanks to a fortuitous set of conditions

Here’s what makes life able to thrive on our home planet:

1. EARTH’S LOCATION IS FAR FROM MANY HAZARDS

The solar system is comfortably nestled in a safe harbor between major spiral arms,
and its nearly circular orbit helps it avoid the galaxy’s perilous inner regions. There are
relatively few stars near the sun, reducing risks to Earth from gravitational tugs, gamma-ray
bursts, or collapsing stars called supernovae.

2. EARTH’S SUN IS A STABLE AND LONG- LASTING STAR

Stars more massive than the sun burn hotter and usually don’t live long enough for
planets to develop life. Less massive, younger stars are often unstable and are prone to
blasting their planets with bursts of radiation

3. EARTH IS AT JUST THE RIGHT DISTANCE FROM THE SUN

Earth orbits in the so-called Goldilocks zone, where the planet receives enough
energy to allow water to exist as a liquid on its surface. Too far, and the vital compound
stays locked up as ice. Too close, and the water would rapidly evaporate into the
atmosphere

4. EARTH HAVE THE RIGHT STUFF TO HOST A DYNAMIC CORE

The interstellar cloud of gas and dust that gave rise to Earth contained enough
radioactive elements to power a churning core for billions of years. This creates a magnetic
8
field that protects the planet from dangers like solar flares.

5. BIG MOON TO STABILIZE OUR AXIAL WOBBLE

Earth is tilted with respect to the sun, and teeters as it spins. This tiny wobble can
shift the climate from hot to icy every 41,000 years—and might vary more without the
moon’s stabilizing pull.

6. OZONE LAYER TO BLOCK HARMFUL RAYS

Ancient plantlike organisms in the oceans added oxygen to the atmosphere and
created a high-altitude layer of ozone that shielded early land species from lethal radiation
