What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged
to follow the standard sequence of the course, but the order in which you read them
can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify different hand tools and their proper use;
2. classify and mark unsafe and faulty tools for repair or replacement;
3. distinguish appropriate hand tools according to job requirements;
4. enhance and fine-tune a future technician’s ability to listen
communicate in both written and oral forms; and,
5. display interest in learning new things and teamwork.

Lesson 2
proper operation and mark unsafe or
faulty tools for repair according to
standard

What Is It

Selecting the best tool for each task requires training in the proper use of the tools,
field experience in their safe use, and following the manufacturer’s guidance and
instructions for that specific tool.
Improper use of hand tools is the reason for hand tools-related accidents and
injuries. Below are the different hand tools and their proper use.
1. ESD TOOLS

a. Anti-static wrist strap should be worn

on the wrist of the non-dominant
hand with the other end connected to
a ground. Example of the ground, the
computer case, table or work bench.

b. Wearing the anti-static wrist strap on

your dominant hand may cause
obstructions.

c. Make sure the other end of the anti-

static wrist strap is connected to a
ground.

Tech Tip

Technicians should roll up their sleeves,

remove scarves or ties, and tuck in shirts
to prevent interference from clothing.
Ensure that earrings, necklaces, and other
loose jewelry are properly secured.

7
d. Antistatic gloves can be used instead
of an antistatic wrist strap. Laptops
frequently do not have good places
to attach a wrist strap, and in such a
case, antistatic gloves work better.

2. HAND TOOLS
a. Always match the screwdriver to the
screw head, both in terms of size
and type. Grip the handle with one
hand and grip the tip of the
screwdriver, near the screw, with the
other. Apply force and twist until the
screw catches a grip, then ensure it
goes in straight.

b. Keep the screwdriver handle clean. A greasy handle could cause an injury
or damage from unexpected slippage.

c. Do not use a hand tool if the handle surface has cracks or splits.

d. Using the wrong tool can be dangerous. Using a chisel as a screwdriver or

a screwdriver as a chisel may cause the tip of the tool to break and fly off,
hitting the user or another person. Only use tools for their designated
purpose.

e. In using the wire cutter, wear safety

glasses or goggles, or a face shield
(with safety glasses or goggles)
whenever there is a potential hazard
from flying particles, pieces of wire,
etc.

f. Cut at right angles. Never rock the

cutting tool from side to side or bend
wire back and forth against the
cutting edges.

g. Choose pliers or wire cutters that

have a grip span of 6 cm - 9 cm (2
1/2 - 3 1/2 in.) to prevent your palm
or fingers from being pinched when

8
the tools are closed. Use adjustable
pliers that allow you to grip the
workpiece firmly while maintaining a
comfortable handgrip (i.e., hand
grasp is not too wide).

h. Inspect tools for defects before use.

Replace or repair defective tools.

i. Do not apply excessive force or

pressure on tools.

3. CLEANING TOOLS
a. When using the compressed air, never point it at yourself or another person.
b. Try to get into the habit of checking your air compressor for signs of
damage before each use. If a technician happens to push a forklift over the
line, it could result in a major air leak. When you turn the air compressor on,
the air will likely shoot out through the hole rather than the nozzle.
c. Use the compressed air to clean the heat sink.
d. Use mild cleaning solution and lint-free cloth to clean computer cases,
outside of monitor or LCD screen.

Tech Tip
Caution
When using compressed air to clean inside
the computer, blow the air around the Before cleaning any device, turn it
components with a minimum distance of 4 off and unplug the device from
in. (10 cm) from the nozzle. Clean the the power source.
power supply and the fan from the back of
the case.

Remember:
1. All tools should be kept in good condition with regular maintenance.
2. The right tool should be used for the job.
3. Each tool should be examined before use, and damaged or defective tools
are not to be used.

9
What’s More

MATCHING TYPE
Directions: Link each tool with itsproper use and/or with the advice about how to
use it. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
TOOLS ADVICE
____1. Anti-static Wrist Strap A. Match each screw with the
proper screwdriver.
____2. Wire stripper B. You can use this tool to make
the cable neatly outside of a
computer.
____3. Screwdriver C. Cut at right angles. Never rock
the cutting tool from side to side
or bend the wire back and forth
against the cutting edges
____4. Compressed air D. Make sure no current is running
through the circuit or component
you want to test
____5. Anti-static gloves E. Attach the wire on the same side
of the equipment as the arm
wearing the antistatic wrist strap.
____6. Cable ties F. Organize your tools,holds
screws and other small parts to
prevent them from getting mixed
together.
____7. Soft -clean tool G. Using this tool will help you
protect your valuable computer
equipment from dangerous static
electricity.
____8. Digital Multi-Meter Tester H. This tool will help you clean your
computer.
____9. Parts Organizer I. This tool can be used instead of
an anti-static wrist strap.
____10. Anti-static Mat J. Blow the air around the
components with a minimum
distance of 4 in. (10 cm) from the
nozzle.

below. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

What I Can Do

PLAY-ACTING SITUATIONS
Objective of the performance activity: To enhance and fine-tune a future
technician’s ability to listen, communicate in both written and oral forms, and support
people who use computers in a professional manner.

Directions: Write your conversations on your answer sheets or record your

conversations.

1. Refine your customer skills by play-acting situations with your family. It can be
your siblings or relatives. You can communicate through a video call, use
online platform or through text messaging. Record your conversions or jot
down your conversions. One will take the role of the technician and the other
should take the role of the customer. Instead of asking “Did you do
_________?” ask questions about proper use of hand tools. “When did you do
_________?” “What happened? When you did ________?” or “When did you
first notice _______?” Rate each other, using positive words. You can give
negative feedback but do it in a positive manner. For example, if the person
spoke in a low tone, but the words were good, you might give the following

11
feedback: “Your explanation was very good, but I had a hard time hearing
you. You might want to speak up just a bit louder.”
