The module is intended to ensure learning continuity under the “new normal”
in education amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It is designed to nurture the basic
science skills and concepts of the learners. The activities were carefully designed to
ensure that our learners are properly guided towards achieving the best learning
outcomes.

As the learning facilitator, please extend your help to your child in going along
the module. Ensure that your child has time in reading the module and help him/her
understand the instructions.

This module is intended to help you continue learning MAPEH (Arts) at home.
It provides activities that help you familiarize the different arts and crafts of Highland
and Lowland of Luzon. The topics are arranged developmentally from simple to
complex, so it is necessary not to skip any part.

For this module to be of great help and use to you, it is important that as a
reader, you devote sufficient time in reading and understanding it.

Here’s an important guide for you in going about the module:

2. Follow the instructions very carefully.

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Arts and crafts are important means of expression, which communicate views,
ideas and feelings through the use of skills and imagination. These are important
parts of our daily lives and can be found everywhere.

The sculptures and architectures of Luzon reveal many aspects of the


people’s culture, tradition and history. The elements and principles of art of these
fascinating arts and crafts will lead you to understand the rich culture and generation
and tradition of the Philippines that is handed down from generation to generation.

WHAT’S IN IT

Terminologies:
Bakwat -belt made by the Ga’ddangs. Mothers wear it after
giving of birth
Balisong - also known as the “butterfly knife” of Batangas
Bul’ul -a sculpture of the human figure made of wood that
represents the ancestor spirits of the Ifugaos. These
are used in harvest rituals to ask protection for the
crops and bountiful harvest

Buri -leaves in making mats/baskets


Burnay -is a clay jar in Ilocos Sur
Higantes -big papier mache human figures such as farmers,
fishermen and workers of Angono Rizal
Inabel -is a traditional way of weaving textile in Ilocus Sur
Ivatan -are group of people from Batanes
Kain -wrap-round skirt or tapis worn by the Southern Kaling
women
Kadangyan -burial cloth of Mt. Province woven by female elders
Kiping -colorful decors,traditionally used during the Pahiyas
Lingling-o -amulets worn around the neck used as fertility symbols of
Ifugaos
Singkaban - local term for bamboo arches designed with kayas or
woodshaving in Bulacan
Soot - a rain cape worn by the Ivatan men
Ukit - the local term for carving
vakul - head gear used by the Ivatan women to protect them from
the heat of the sun and the rains.

The arts and crafts of Luzon depict the rich culture and traditions of the
Filipinos. The textiles produced in every province signify their culture based on how it
was made. The materials, the techniques and the symbols used in these arts and
crafts have their own cultural and traditional significance.
The Ifugaos make lingling-o which symbolizes fertility. They carve the bul’ul,
a representation of their ancestor spirits, in their rituals. They practice tattooing as a
part of their rich culture and traditions.
Another form of sculpture tradition in Luzon is the ukit or woodcarving of
Laguna. Pottery can also be found in the arts and crafts of Luzon, particularly the
burnay of Ilocos.

ELEMENTS OF ART

1. Lines-is a mark made by a moving point


Types of Line used in arts
a) Horizontal lines- parallel to the ground
b) Vertical Lines-move straight up and down
c) Diagonal Lines-leaning and somewhere between a vertical and a
horizontal line
d) Curved lines-express movement in a graceful and flowing way
e) Zigzag Lines-made by combining diagonal lines that form sharp angles
and suddenly change direction
2. Shape-is a two dimensional figure enclosed by a line.

Kinds of Shapes:

a) Geometric Shapes- precise shapes


b) Organic Shapes- not regular
3. Form-element of art that refers to an object with three dimensions-height,
width and depth

4. Space- element of art that refers to the distance or area between, around,
above, below-within objects.

5. Texture-surface quality of an object and is perceived through two senses-


touch and sight.

3 kinds of texture:

a) Tactile textures-real textures which you can touch and feel.
b) Artificial textures- refer to human-made surface quality
that is supposed to look and feel like some
material.
c) Visual textures-textures evoked by a photograph or
picture depicting an object.
6. Color-is an element of art that is derived from reflected light

3 Properties:

a) Hue- color’s name


 The three primary hues are red, yellow and blue.
b) Value- property of color concerned with the lightness or
darkness of a hue.
c) Intensity-is the brightness or dullness of a color

PRINCIPLES OF ART:

1. Balance- a way of combining elements to stress the differences between


those elements.
2. Unity – is the arrangement of elements to create a feeling of oneness
3 Variety – a principle of design concerned with diversity or contrast. Variety
is achieved by using different shapes, sizes, and/or colors in work
of art.
5. Emphasis - a way of combining elements to stress the differences between
those elements.
6. Movement – a principle of design used to create the look and feeling
of action and to guide the viewer’s eye throughout the work
art.
7. Pattern- it is the repetition of a particular element of art in a single
composition
8. Proportion – it deals with the proper relation between two objects or
parts

Performance Assessment Activity PINCH POT! : Make your own jar/pot using clay
or any available material you can use in making pottery.

Materials: clay, pencil or any pointed art object


Procedures:
1. Form a clay into round balls
2. Using your thumb, push it in the center
3. Rotate it at the center and continue pinching the clay until you get the desired
shape
4. Start designing your pot using the tip of the pencil/ or any pointed art object. You
can use the tattoo designs of Kalinga or the different patterns in the Ilocos and
Cordillera Province textile as inspiration.
