WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Dear Learner! Today you will start your journey in studying how the human reproductive system
works to help people reproduce. Each task leads you to a meaningful discovery in learning the
structures of reproductive organs, the functions of the different parts, how they work, how to take care
of them, and why maintaining reproductive health is important.

At the end of this module, you will be able to identify the different parts of the male and female
reproductive system. You will also be able to describe the functions of the different parts of the human
reproductive system.

To maximize the use of this module, you need to do the following:

1. Answer What I Know (Pretest). Then get the Answer Key from your teacher to check your answer
to find out your existing knowledge about the topic.
2. Proceed to What's In. This is to motivate you or a review of the previous lesson that you have
learned.
3. Go to What's New. In Activity 1, read and understand the important notes or basic information
that you need to know about the lesson. Then answer Activity 2 to test what you have learned in
Activity 1. Refer to the Answer Key for correction.
4. What Is It is the brief discussion of what you have learned. Then Answer What's More to
practice what you have learned. Refer to the Answer key for correction. Be sure to follow the
instructions.
5. You must be able to give the generalization by doing What I Have Learned, then answer the
Post Assessment to know how much you mastered the lesson.
6. What I Can Do is also provided for you to carry out your performance task, which is to practice
proper hygiene for your reproductive organs.
7. References are also provided as your guide. They can be of help. Use them fully.

WHAT’S IN

In your previous grade level, you’ve learned the other organ system pf the body including muscular
system which is responsible for movement. You’ve learned that the major organ of the muscular
system includes skeletal, smooth and smooth and cardiac muscles.
Now it’s time to learn other organ system such as Reproductive System. In the following
activities, you will discover the different organs in the reproductive system.

What’s New

Activity: What do I know about the male and female reproductive organs? What
to do:

1. Study the male and female reproductive system.

2. List the organs of the male and female reproductive system.

A. Male Reproductive System

Cowper's Gland

Seminal vesicle
Vas deferens

Prostate gland
penis

epididymis urethra

testes scrotum

B. Female Reproductive System

Fallopian tube
Uterus
Ovary
Cervix
Endometrium
Vagina

Parts of the Male Reproductive System Parts of the Female Reproductive System
4
How do you compare the male from the female reproductive organs?

WHAT IS IT

The main function of the human reproductive system is to ensure the continuity of the human race
by producing children of their own kind.

A. The Male Reproductive System

Specifically, the main function of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm cells and
hormones. A sperm cell is needed to fertilize an egg cell then later develop into a fetus, then the
birth of an infant.

The main organs of the male reproductive system are the testes or testicles. At puberty, the
testes produce millions of sperm cells and the male sex hormone called testosterone. Testosterone is
responsible for the development of the secondary sex characteristics such as body hair, muscle
development, and the deep voice of males. These traits usually appear during adolescence.

The testis is protected by the scrotum which keeps the testes slightly cooler than the body
temperature. Sperm cells die at normal body temperature so the sac maintains the low temperature to
keep the sperm cells viable. The sperm cells are initially stored for a certain number of days until they
mature inside the epididymis. The mature sperm cells leave the epididymis through the vas deferens.
The vas deferens also connects the testes to the seminal vesicle and urethra. The two vas deferens
join at the urethra, the passageway for the elimination of urine and sperm that leaves the male's body.

The seminal vesicle, prostate gland, and Cowper's gland are called accessory glands.
Seminal vesicles produce a sugar-rich fluid that provides energy for the motility of the sperm cells.
Cowper's gland is responsible for releasing fluid that flushes out foreign matters and neutralizes the
acidic urine in the urethra. The prostate gland produces fluid that nourishes and protects the sperm.

B. Female Reproductive System

The main organs of the female reproductive system are the ovaries. The ovaries are oval in shape
and are located in the lower part of the abdomen. They produce the female sex cells or ova. The
ovaries produce only one mature egg or ovum per month. The ovaries also produce estrogen and
progesterone, which are the female sex hormones.

5
When an egg cell matures, it leaves the ovary and passes through the fallopian tubes, or oviducts,
to the uterus. The fallopian tube is the place where the egg cell is fertilized by the sperm cell. The
uterus, or womb, is a muscular organ where the fertilized egg is implanted, nourished, and
protected as it develops into a fetus until birth. The uterus has an inner lining which is soft and
smooth that thickens and sheds during menstruation called the endometrium. At the lower part of
the uterus is the cervix, which is a narrow opening between the uterus and the vagina. When giving
birth, it expands to allow the baby to pass through it. The vagina, also known as the birth canal, is
a hollow, muscular tube that leads to the opening called vulva. It serves as the passageway for sperm
cells, menstrual fluids, and the baby during natural birth.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

The reproductive system is an important body system. It is responsible for ensuring the survival of species by
enabling them to produce new organisms that are like them. What happens when the reproductive system does not
function properly?

Maintaining your personal hygiene is one strategy that will help ensure the proper functioning of the
reproductive system.

Activity 1.

Objective: Identify good health practices for the reproductive system

Materials: Writing instruments, reference materials

Procedure: In the table is a list of health practices for the reproductive system. Put a check () in the column that
corresponds to your answer.

1. I eat a well-balanced diet.

2. I take vitamins and minerals.

3. I get enough rest and sleep.

4. I exercise regularly.

5. I take a bath every day.

6. I wash my external reproductive parts with soap and

water.
