III WRITING AN OUTLINE (For numbers 12-15)

Study the paragraph and copy the parts that indicate those listed at the
left side of the table. The specific parts were given. In writing your answers, you can
shorten them by using ellipsis (…) to minimize copying long sentences. Copy first the
simple template below to fill it in.

Corporate Social responsibility (SCR) can generate a positive

reputation for a company leading to possibly more sales and growth.
According to Jones et.al. (2019), a corporation that invests in the
environmental and ethical approaches of CSR will demonstrate to the public
and the media that they are a responsible company. Watson (2018) provides
evidence that this improves consumer sales as costumers tend to support
ethical green busines practice thus improving profitability and encouraging
growth. For example, a Yogurt company called Yeo Valley has been investing
in making its products organic, creating fully recyclable packaging and
reducing its CO2 output. As a result, profits have doubled since the last two
years providing the company with a range of opportunities to expand
(Peterson, 2019). Overall, the evidence seems to suggest that investing in
CSR can improve brand image and productivity. (Your Dictionary, n. d.)

What's In

In grasping information from long texts, it is best to apply the art of outlining.
Outlining information can help someone learn facts in a logical way and it will be
easy for him to understand what a certain passage wants to notify its readers.

Besides earning a personal understanding of a certain passage,

outlining can also help someone relay information successfully. With the
systematized arrangement of facts or ideas he is able to gather, it would be easy for
him to impart to others what he deems are important to a certain group or
organization.

The succeeding parts of this learning material will help you understand
more about outlining as an essential element in the art of academic and professional
communication.

What’s New

This is to introduce or to remind you a very simple illustration of an outline. Try

to fill in each missing part with something that is applicable in each set. No answer is
considered incorrect as long as it fits in each category.

5
What is It

An outline is a helpful guide in organizing information. It gives a visual

structure to one's work and is used to show relationships and hierarchies within text
contents (Walden University education for Group, 2020).

It is also a tool used to organize written ideas about a topic into a logical
order. It is meant to help establish a structure for a paper we are going to write
(Ashford University, n. d). It is a way for us to demonstrate the main argument
(thesis), main points (topic sentences), and main pieces of evidence we are going to
present in a paper before actually writing the paper.

In doing an outline, you must create a linear, organized presentation of facts

that shows the main ideas that are discussed as well as their relationships.

In this lesson, you will be directed to the two main types of outlining. There
are other types; however, you can have that later in the higher educational level.

Take a look at this.

Two main types of outlines

1. Topic Outline
This is brief. It reveals the logic you will follow in your
paper. It provides a quick overview of topics to be
included in an essay. Example: a syllabus from courses
with topics listed for each unit.
2. Sentence Outline
a. The thesis and topic sentence of each supporting
paragraph are fully written out.
b. It forces part of the essay to be written out in sentences
before the first draft. Here are examples of sentence
and topic outlines
c. It helps you make sure you become sufficiently specific about
your subject, rather than simply generalizing
(CWW101. n. d.)

6
Study this example of a topic outline. The thesis or main subject is provided.

Thesis: The abuse of alcohol and drugs can affect a

person economically, psychologically and physically
(Course Hero. Ben Davis School. n.d.)

I. Economical effects (Main idea)

A. Alcohol (Sub-idea)
1. Cost of alcohol purchases (Detail of A)
2. Cost of DUIs (Detail of A)

B. Drugs (Sub-point)
1. Cost of drug purchases (Detail of B)
2. Cost of drug arrest (Detail of B)

II. Psychological effects

A. Alcohol
1. Mental impairment
2. Mental addiction
B. Drugs
1. Mental impairment
2. Mental addiction
III. Physical effects
A. Alcohol
1. Liver disease
2. Alcohol poisoning
B. Drugs
1. Brain damage
2. Drug overdose
(Course Hero.com. n.d)

7
This is also an example of a sentence outline. Compare it with the previous one.
What do you notice?

Thesis: The abuse of alcohol and drugs can affect a person

economically, psychologically, and physically.

I. Alcohol and drug abuse can affect one economically.

A. The cost of alcohol abuse is high and getting higher.
1. The costs of DUIs can be enormous.
2. Alcohol costs are always rising because of rising production
costs as well as state and local taxes.

B. The cost of drug abuse can be high.

1. Even the arrest for the possession of a minute amount of
drugs can result in high bail and court cost.
2. The cost of drugs fluctuates drastically according to the type of
drug, its availability, and the amount.
II. Alcohol and drug abuse can have severe psychological effects.
A. Alcohol abuse can damage a person psychologically.
1. Alcohol is a depressant and can alter the personality of anyone.
2. The abuse of alcohol can lead to the psychological addiction
to alcohol.
B. Drug abuse can be detrimental to one psychologically.
1. Drugs impair one's ability to function normally because of the
hallucinations or numbness of "getting high."
2. Drugs can become a psychological addiction.
III. Alcohol and drug abuse can affect one physically.
A. Alcohol and drug abuse can cause physical problems.
1. The most common disease among alcoholics is cirrhosis of
the liver.
2. The massive consumption of alcohol can lead to alcohol
poisoning and death.

death.
--Most of those who call themselves Muslim observe
Islam's rules. (Course Hero.com., n.d)

8
Here's another thing you should take note of.

Tips in creating an outline

1. Place your thesis statement at the beginning.
2. List the major points that support your thesis. Label them in Roman
Numerals (I, II, III, IV, etc.).
3. List supporting ideas or argument for each major point. Use capital letters
like A, B, C, etc.
4. If applicable, continue to subdivide each supporting idea until your outline is
fully developed.
It will appear like this in structure like what we have in the examples above:

I ____
A.____
1. ____
a.____
II ____
A.____
1. ____

The pattern can be continued based on the information presented in a certain

text or essay. At times, the small letter, like a., b. and so on are not always present.

What's More

Activity 1: Read and outline!

Here now starts your reading and outlining activities. They are in paragraph
structures which are numbered according to statements. Read each and then fill in
the blanks in the outlines that follow.
(Note: On your answer sheets, copy the numbers with statements and just fill
in those that require answers. Example:

1.
2.
3. To be an effective leader is to be a good
follower.
--
--
- - Be punctual in all organizational gatherings.
--

9
Paragraph 1
1. What makes an effective leader? 2 To be sure, no one characteristic
or trait defines an effective leader. 3 It is true, however, that effective leaders
get the most out of employees or group members by holding them to very
high standards or expectations. 4 Setting high standards increases
productivity because people tend to live up to the expectations set for them
by superiors. 5 This is an example of the Pygmalion effect, which works in a
subtle, often unconscious way. 6 When a managerial leader believes that a
group member will succeed, the manager communicates this belief without
realizing that he or she is doing so. 7 Conversely, when a leader expects a
group member to fail, that person will not usually disappoint the manager. 8
The manager’s expectation of success or failure becomes a self-fulfilling
prophecy. 9 Thus it pays for a manager to expect the best from employees.
(Microsoft Word – OutliningFill-inREVISED.doc. n. d)

Main Idea: Effective leaders encourage a high level of performance by

expecting the best from their employees. Support:
1. People are likely to live up to a manager's or superior's
expectations.
2. Called the “Pygmalion effect” i.e. expect the best and you'll get it.

3. ________________________________________________________
________________________________.

--leader who expects the best gets high achievement

--leader who doesn't expect much gets low achievement
--____________________________________________
--pays for leaders to expect the best

Paragraph 2
1 Despite its rapid spread, Islam is not a religion for those who are casual
about regulations. 2 On the contrary, adhering to the rules of Islam takes effort
and discipline. 3 One must rise before dawn to observe the first of five prayers
required daily, none of which can take place without first cleansing oneself
according to an established ritual or ceremony. 4 Sleep, work, and recreational
activities take second place to prayer. 5 Fasting for the month of Ramadan,
undertaking the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime, paying tax for
relief of the Muslim poor, and accepting Islam’s creed require a serious and an
energetic commitment. 6 On the whole, the vast majority of Muslims worldwide
do observe those tenets.
Main Idea: Practitioners of Islam need to be willing to make a lot of effort
to follow the rules of their faith. (Microsoft Word – OutliningFill-inREVISED.doc.
n. d)

10
Support: 1. Get up before dawn, perform ritualized cleansing and say the first of
five daily prayers.

2. _______________________________________________

3. Fasting for the month of Ramadan.

4. ______________________________________________

5. ______________________________________________

6. Accepting Islamic beliefs.

Paragraph 3
1 Those cuddly stuffed animals called teddy bears seem to have been
around forever. 2 But actually the first teddy bears came into being when
President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt showed himself too much of a sportsman
to shoot a staked bear cub. 3 In 1902, Roosevelt visited Mississippi to settle a
border dispute. 4 In Roosevelt’s honor, his hosts organized a hunting expedition. 5
To make sure that the president would bag a trophy, they staked a bear cub to the
ground so that Roosevelt’s shot couldn’t miss. 6 To his credit, Roosevelt refused
to shoot the bear. 7 When the incident was publicized, largely through political
cartoons, a Russian candy store owner named Morris Michtom made a toy bear
out of soft, fuzzy cloth and placed it in his shop window with a sign reading
“Teddy’s Bear.” 8 The bear was a hit with passersby, and teddy-bear mania
spread rapidly throughout the country. 9 Soon, Teddy's bear was the country's
most popular toy, the teddy bear (Microsoft Word – OutliningFill-inREVISED.doc.
n. d).

Main Idea:
Support: 1. In 1902, Roosevelt went to Mississippi and was the guest of
honor at a hunting expedition.
2._________________________________________________________

3._________________________________________________________

4. After story got publicity via political cartoons, candy store owner
created Teddy's bear.
5. The bear was a hit and everyone wanted one.
- -___________________________________________________

11
Paragraph 4
1 Many people don’t know the difference between a patent and a
trademark. 2 However the terms trademark and patent aren't synonyms, they
refer to different things. 3 Granted for a specific number of years, a patent
protects both the name of a product and its method of manufacture. 4 In 1928,
for example, Jacob Schick invented and then patented the electric razor in an
effort to maintain complete control of his creation. 5 Similarly, between 1895 and
1912, no one but the Shredded Wheat company was allowed to make shredded
wheat because the company had the patent. 6 A trademark is a name, symbol,
or other device that identifies a product and makes it memorable in the minds of
consumers. 7 Kleenex, JELL-O, and Xerox are all examples of trademarks. 8
Aware of the power that trademarks possess, companies fight to protect them. 9
They do not allow anyone else to use one without permission. 10Occasionally,
though, a company gets careless and loses control of a trademark. 11Aspirin, for
example, is no longer considered a trademark, and any company can call a pain-
reducing tablet an aspirin.

Main Idea:
Support: 1. Patents are granted for a specific number of years and protect
both name and method of manufacture.
a._________________________________________________________
b. Between 1895 and 1912, Shredded Wheat company had patent on
shredded wheat

2._________________________________________________________
a._________________________________________________________
b. Companies generally fight to protect trademarks but they can get
careless.
- - __________________________________________________

12
Paragraph 5
5. Noah Webster, the creator of Webster's dictionary, was a super-patriot,
whose goal was to take the United States out of Britain's linguistic* shadow. 2 It was
Webster who coined the term "American English," considering it an expression of
praise, because he wanted the language of the newly formed United States to have
its own special flavor. 3 Many of his changes to British spelling like theater instead
of theatre and plow instead of plough caught on and became the standard American
spelling. 4 Determined to emphasize the importance of America's influence on the
language, Webster purposely titled his dictionary the American Dictionary of the
English Language. 5 He also made sure to include thousands of words familiar only
to Americans but unheard of by the British. 6 Among them were moose, prairie, and
skunk. 7 Webster was so much the patriot that he even took on the great American
hero George Washington at a dinner party. 8 Washington had thought of hiring a
Scotch tutor for his step-grandchildren, an idea that appalled Webster. 9 He insisted
that the United States had plenty of homegrown scholars that would be as good or
better and, above all, who would speak English without a foreign accent.
(Microsoft Word – OutliningFill-inREVISED.doc. n. d)

Main Idea: _______________________________________________________

Support: 1. _____________________________________________________
2. His changes to British spellings became popular, for instance, "theater"
and "plow" instead of “theatre” and “plough.”
3. _______________________________________________________
4. _______________________________________________________

-- 5. Webster even criticized George Washington for wanting to

hire a Scotch tutor.

Activity: Outline Me!

On a short bond paper, write a sentence outline of the text below using
the hamburger writing template. You can add the number of details based on the
presentation on the essay.

Throughout history and through a cross-section of cultures, women have

transformed their appearance to conform to a beauty ideal. Ancient Chinese aristocrats
bound their feet as a show of femininity; American and European women in the 1800s
cinched in their waists so tightly, some suffered internal damage; in some African
cultures, women continue to wear plates in their lower lips, continually stretching the skin
to receive plates of larger size. The North American ideal of beauty has continually
focused on women's bodies: the tiny waist of the Victorian period, the boyish figure in
vogue during the flapper era, and the voluptuous curves that were the measure of beauty
between the 1930s and 1950s. Current standards emphasize a toned, slender look, one
that exudes fitness, youth, and health. According to psychologist Eva Szekely, "Having to
be attractive at this time... means unequivocally having to be thin. In North America
today, thinness is a precondition for being perceived by others and oneself as healthy."
However, this relentless pursuit of thinness is not just an example of women trying to
look their best, it is also a struggle for control, acceptance and success." (Your
