1.1 Question:

What is Communication? Explain the components of communication.

Communication

“Communication is an interaction of trading verbal and non verbal messages.”

It is a constant interaction. In this manner, communication is a two way measure and is

inadequate without an input from the beneficiary to the sender on how well the
message is perceived by him.

Another definition of communication is following:

“Communication is the art and process of creating and sharing ideas.”

Communication Process

The main components of communication process are as follows:

1. Source

The source of the message is the sender. The sender must know why the
communication is necessary and what result is needed.
Example of Source in communication

For example, Sadia is the sender and encoder who

send messages to communicate with her husband. The sender/source is the person who
sends the message to communicate with others. So, Sadia is the sender also an element
of the communication process.

2. Message

The message seems like a key element of any communication process. Any
communication might happen to convey the message that is also known as the process of
sharing ideas, opinions, thoughts, and information. Always, the sender wants to convey
the message to communicate with the receiver. So, senders need to ensure that the main
objective of the message is clear and understandable.

Example of Message in communication

For example, Sadia was speaking to convey the message

that indicates verbal communication.  She also showed her angry face to her son to
reduce the volume of TV that is called non-verbal communication.

3. Encoding

Encoding is the process of taking your message and transferring it into the proper
format for sharing it with your audience. It requires knowing your audience and
ensuring that your message provides all of the information that they need.

Example of encoding in communication

For example, Sadia has converted his thought into words to

convey the message to her husband that is called encoding. Here, converting the thought
into words is the process of encoding. Words are serving as the spoken communication
symbol. She called her husband and uttered some words to share an opinion as well as
send the message.
4. Channel

The Channel is the method of communication that you choose such as face-to-face, by
telephone, or via email.

Example of Channel or Medium in communication

For example, Sadia has transmitted the

message through a Smartphone so the Smartphone is the channel of the communication
process. She uses technology to convey messages therefore it is called mediated
communication.

5. Decoding

Decoding is the process of receiving the message accurately and requires that
your audience has the means to understand the information you are sharing.

Example of Decoding in communication

For example, Sadia has transformed his thought into words

to convey the message to her husband that is called encoding. Whereas, her husband
converts those words into thought to understand the message that is the process of
decoding.

6. Receiver

You have expectations for a response from the receiver when you send a message.
You can increase the chances of getting this result by addressing your audience’s
concerns or addressing specific benfits as part of your communication.

Example of Receiver in communication

For example, Sadia has sent the message targeted at her

husband to whom she wants to communicate. Hence, her husband is the receiver in this
context of the communication.

7. Feedback

Feedback lets you gauge how successful you were at communicating. It also offers
a chance to adjust your communication process for the future.
Example of Feedback in communication

For example, Sadia’s husband asked about the due date of

paying the electricity bill.

8. Context

Context involves things such as your relationship with your audience, the culture
of your organization and your general environment.

Example of context in communication

For example, Sadia is talking to her husband informally, so

she feels very comfortable. Therefore, the social-context has been designed from this
communication process. The context would be physical-context if they communicate face
to face.
