Case Study Report: New Boss

The environmental protection agency was under the management of Paul Wagner. He was in

charge of four engineers, three new people and a senior with three years’ experience, Waymon

Burell. Mr Burell was affected to the most complicated project in the state. After few times, the

four engineers received harder missions to accomplish and acquired a lot of experience.

Paul Wagner had another job proposition and he took it. The organization needed a new manager

and the members of the section thought Waymon Burell was the perfect candidate for the job. He

was contacted for an interview with the top executives. The top executives chose to hire a

temporary section chief, Sam Kutzman. However, Mr Kutzman has no experience with the

program.

Question One

Do you think Sam Kutzman was a good choice for temporary section chief?

As far as I am concerned, I do not think that Sam Kutzman is a good choice for temporary

section chief. First, he does not know the organization and he has never worked on the project.

As explains in the text, some projects are very complicated and Waymon Burell was assigned to

them because he is the most experienced engineer. Sam Kutzman does not how to take care of

the project and he will need time to learn.

Secondly, he will stay for a limited time. This time might be too short for him to adapt to his new

function and acknowledge all he needs to be effective.

Furthermore, Waymon Burell was probably the best person for the job with his experience in the

company. He has the best engineer knowledge and skills for the job. He will probably feel

betrayed by the company.

Question Two

How well has human resource planning worked in this situation?

The human resources planned quickly how to replace Paul Wagner. They reacted quickly to his

departure to so as not to disrupt the organization.

However, their quick answer was not the right one for me. They chose someone who was not on

the project and this was a mistake. Members of the projects, and most particularly Waymon

Burell, will feel betrayed because they have the profile and the skills to succeed at this position.

The human resources did not privileged the local workforce and that can create a bad atmosphere

in the project. Therefore, it can create tensions between the engineers and the manager. That

could generate bad effects for the organization future.

That is why I do not think the human resources worked well in the situation. Nevertheless, if

Sam Kutzman adapts well and provides good results, in a good atmosphere of work, they would

have done a great job.

Conclusion

To conclude on this case, the organization decided to hire Sam Kutzman, at a position of

manager for temporary time. Waymon Burell was a great candidate for the job, with a three

years’ experience in the company. The human resources chose an external candidate of the

division and this choice can generate troubles for the organization climate and success. This

decision could create tensions and destabilize the division. It will depend a lot of the adaptation

of the new manager and the reaction of the team.
