Gas Compartment

September 18, 2020 Slide 13

General Information of GIS
Gas Compartment
 Gas compartments are partitioned by barrier
insulators.
 Gas compartments are equipped with a non-
return valve, thus taking gas samples or
refilling of SF6-gas can be performed without
any problems.

 Note: For reasons of occupational safety and

environment protection, ABB does neither
offer nor deliver any external gas piping,
neither for permanent nor for temporary use.

General Information of GIS
Gas Compartment

 Gas density is monitored by temperature

compensated relays giving alarm and
lockout signal.

 Bursting disc is installed to let the

excessive gas pressure blow out when a
heavy internal fault occurs ( P>1000 –
1100 kPa )

September 18, 2020 Slide 34

Operation Instruction
Electrical control / Emergency operation
Electrical Control (LOCAL)
In position RELEASE all electrical interlocking is deactivated.
Incorrect switching operations are possible!
Switching operations without paying attention to the blocking and
interlocking conditions might result in destruction of parts of the GIS!

September 18, 2020 Slide 35

Operation Instruction
Manual operation
Manual Control (Disconnector/Earthing switch)
In emergencies the disconnector/earthing switch can be operated
manually directly on the device by means of a handcrank. As soon
as the handcrank is inserted into the drive mechanism, the circuit for
motor operation is automatically interrupted.

Manual Control (Circuit Breaker)

In emergencies the circuit breaker can be operated manually directly on the
device by actuating the control valves.
With the alarm “CB OFF blocking” active, the circuit breaker may be switched
off manually only if the feeder is de-energized.
With the alarm “CB ON blocking” active, the circuit breaker may be switched
on manually only if the feeder is de-energized.

Alarm Monitoring System & Interlocking
General Concept
 To avoid dangerous or damaging switchgear
operations and to assure personnel safety
 Disconnectors shall not be opened or closed on-load
 Disconnectors shall not be closed in a way that may bring voltage
to ground
 Earthing switches shall not be closed onto voltage
 Earthing switches shall not be closed in a way that may bring
voltage to ground
 CBs shall not be closed when surrounding disconnectors are in
intermediate positions
 CB opening is only interlocked at a bus-coupler bay, if a busbar
transfer is in progress

5. Maintenance

September 18, 2020 Slide 48

Maintenance

 Maintenance
The individual switchgears have to be controlled after a
certian number of operations, and their contacts are to be
overhauled depending on the current loads imposed.

Such an overhaul requires opening the respective gas

compartment. For the duration of the maintenance the
installation has to be partly taken out of service.
