Xi’an was the capital city of China a long time ago (in the 11th century BC). Holding
the cultural heritage of China and the eastern end to the silk road, Xi’an is exposed to many
fusions of cultures. Furthermore, Xi’an is also part of the West triangle economic zone
besides Chongqing and Chengdu, making this city also advanced in their city layout, city
hygiene and society management. Xi’an is a muslim-friendly city, so it wasn’t hard to find a
halal restaurant, they even have a halal canteen inside the university. Additionally, Xi’an is a
well-organized city. It has many modern buildings but the ancient sites are well-maintained.
Since we visited Xi’an in summer, the weather during our Summer Program was a little bit
hot but it got cold when it rained on a few days.

Chinese Culture Course (上午古琴,识香 下午抄
Jul.6(Sat.)
经- 丝路风情街少林都市禅堂)
14:00-17:00
The next day, we had Chinese Culture Course. The place was 5 minutes-walk from
the campus. We learned how to play the “Guqin”, a plucked seven-string Chinese musical
instrument of the zither family. The teacher taught us one simple song that wasn’t really hard
to learn. After lunch, we learned to do Chinese Calligraphy. It was really hard because we
were not used to it. There were many rules in practicing the Chinese Calligraphy and we have
to do it the right way. Two days after, we came again and had “Wingchun Kungfu” class.
Learning Kungfu was really fun. We learned some basics techniques and practiced it in a pair
with our friend. Because we were not used to it, we got tired immediately.
During the program, we visited many historical sites such as Terra Cotta Warrior, Da
Ming Palace and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Due to their popularities, these places were very
crowded with tourists and locals. Furthermore, we also visited many museums such as Silk
Road Musem and Shaanxi Historical Museum. They also took us to the new campus
(Chang’an Campus)a and visited many laboratories there.
Other than calligraphy and instrument, we also learned Chinese painting and folk
music. We practiced many times before we did the actual painting. After the painting class,
we listened to Chinese folk music performed by many elderlies. It was fascinating. They were
really good at it. After their performance, we tried to play some of the instruments.
We actually had the schedule to do enterprise visit to Huawei, but because of one
thing after another, we couldn’t do that. Instead, we had some Chinese course. We learned
some basic Chinese. It was hard but the teacher taught us interactively so we didn’t get bored.
There’s s one food street named Muslim Street/Quarter or often called as Hui
Muslims Street. It is really famous in Xi’an. The street is always crowded and lively. The
Muslim street is well-known for serving a lot of delicious food. We tried a lot of food and
drinks. Our favorites were the grilled squid and the yoghurt. Besides food and drinks, they
also sell a lot of merchandise such as key-chain, hand fan, bookmarks, hairpin, etc. We
bought many of them to bring them to Indonesia as souvenirs.

We thank the International Office of University of Indonesia for not only providing us
with information, but also giving us scholarships and opportunities to join the “2019 STUDY
NPU Summer Program”. This program gave us the experience of international exposure, to
blend in a foreign country and understand more about the culture. Our gratitude and highest
appreciation are also given to Kak Arief Wica Wibisono for the help, cooperation, care, and
all the assistance that supported and helped us in the process of the program.
