DEFINITION OF TERMS
▪ Choral – of or relating to a chorus or choir
▪ Choir - a musical ensemble of singers
▪ Choral Music – music sung by a choir with two or more voices assigned to
each part.
▪ Dynamics in music – is the variation in loudness between notes and
phrases.
▪ Tempo - means the speed at which a piece of music should be played

KEY CONCEPTS
Why do humans sing? Singing builds our confidence beyond music.
People use song as a way to release emotional pain and connect with their souls.
We sing to release whatever emotion is going on in our lives or to express whatever
we are missing. People want to sing as naturally as we want to breathe.

Why does God want us to sing? Singing help us combine doctrine and devotion.
Singing is different from just declaring something because it allows God's people
to do it in unison and together within the rhythms of the beat. Coupling biblical realities
and truths with a musical melody has a way of moving us and deeply impacting us.

What is the purpose of singing? Research has shown that singing can be good
for you on many levels. It may help lower stress, boost immunity and lung function,
enhance memory, improve mental health, and help you cope with physical and
emotional pain. When we open our mouths to sing we tend to focus only on what is
coming out of our mouths. We begin to ignore everything going on around us: other
singers, the accompaniment, fire alarms… and any other noise that might distract us
from listening to our own voice!

What is your vocal range? Vocal range is the range of pitches that a human
voice can phonate. Its most common application is within the context of singing, where
it is used as a defining characteristic for classifying singing voices into voice types.
Most of the time vocal range is written as two notes: the lowest note and the highest
note with a dash between them. For example, a pretty common vocal range for male
singers is C3-C5. That's the vocal range of a Tenor. A common vocal range for female
singers is Soprano.

Voice Types (Male):

Bass - is the lowest singing range and typically lies between E2 to E4. In the lower
and upper extremes of the bass voice, some basses can sing from C2 to G4.

Baritone - is the second lowest singing range, and overlaps both Bass and Tenor.
The typical baritone range is from A2 to A4, and might extend down to F2 or up to C5.
The baritone voice type is the most common type of male voice.

Tenor - is the highest type of male voice, typically comfortable between C3 to C5.
Tenors generally have greater control over their falsetto (head voice), allowing them
to reach notes well into the female register. Those who can sing higher than the
average tenor are often given the title “countertenor.”

Voice Types (Female):

Alto - is the lowest type of female voice. The typical alto range lies between F3 to F5,
though there are those who can sing above or below this range. Those who can sing
below are often called “contralto’s” and can usually sing in a range similar to a tenor.

Mezzo-Soprano - is the middle-range voice type for females, overlapping both the
alto and soprano ranges. The typical range of this voice is between A3 and A5. Many
times, mezzo-sopranos will sing the same voice part as sopranos until there is a 3-
way split between sopranos, mezzos, and altos.

Soprano - is the highest singing voice. The typical soprano voice lies between C4
and C6.

Vocal Range - is a measurement of distance from the lowest note to the highest note
that a person can sing. Vocal range is very helpful in defining a singer’s voice type
(Bass, Tenor, Alto, Soprano, for example), measuring vocal progress over time and
choosing songs and repertoire that fit a singer’s voice.

Finding Your Vocal Range

Finding your vocal range is one of the most important things you can know about
yourself as a singer. That’s because learning your vocal range will help you
understand how low or high you can sing. But that’s not all!

Knowing your range can also help you find your voice type, learn where your weak
spots are, measure your progress in voice training and choose the perfect song for
your voice.

Instructions:

1. Watch this great video that walks you through how to find your vocal range,
check this link out:

Why We Sing
Music: Greg Gilpin

A sound of hope, a sound of peace,

a sound that celebrates and speaks what we believe.
A sound of love, a sound so strong,
it’s amazing what is given when we share a song …

This is why we sing, why we lift our voice,

why we stand as one in harmony!
This is why we sing, why we lift our voice,
take my hand and sing with me!

Sooth a soul, mend a heart, bring together lives

that have been torn apart.
Share the joy, find a friend,
it’s a never – ending gift that circles back again.

This is why we sing, why we lift our voice,

why we stand as one in harmony!
This is why we sing, why we lift our voice,
take my hand and sing with me!

Music builds a bridge, it can tear down a wall!

Music is a language, that can speak to one and all!
This is why we sing, why we lift our voice,
why we stand as one in harmony!

This is why we sing, why we lift our voice,

take my hand and sing with me!
This is why we sing, we sing, WE SING!
