CHAP-5 INPUT DEVICES

END OF CHAPTER/EXAM STYLE QUESTIONS

1) Identify two input devices that could be present in a mobile phone.
Ans: The two input devices that can be present in a phone are
a camera and a microphone.
2) Explain what is meant by an input device.
Ans: A input device is what you use to insert data to your
computer system. It can also be either manual or automatic.
such as a keyboard that you use by manually pressing the keys
on it to input data and a temperature sensor that
automatically takes the temperature of a room and inputs it
to the computer system.
3) Input devices can either be automatic or manual. Explain the differences
between the two types. Give examples in your answers.
Ans: The thing that is meant by that input devices can be
automatic or manual is that, such as a keyboard that you use
by manually pressing the keys on it to input data and a
temperature sensor that automatically takes the temperature
of a room and inputs it to the computer system. Thus, the
difference is that in manual input you have to physically be
close to the device and interact with it constantly, whereas an
automatic input device would work on its own without any
constant input unless it is told not to.
4) Explain how a business could make use of QR codes.
Ans: A business could use QR codes for marketing purposes
that include advertising, using QR codes to direct customers
to more information about a product, to their website or to a
person’s full resume.

5) Explain how a touch screen device recognizes that the screen is being
touched.
Ans: There are two types of touch screens which are capacitive
and resistive. The capacitive touch screen is what detects the
natural electrical signals that come from our body to take as
input and thus does not work when we have gloves on as it
cannot get in direct contact with our body to recognize or
detect any input. Whereas, a resistive touch screen has
multiple layers with space between them that touch each
other and detect input to receive as we press on the screen.
6) Explain why, when using a microphone, an analogue-to-digital converter is
also needed when inputting data.
Ans: The analogue-to-digital converter is fully needed because
the computer can only process digital information whereas
the soundwaves recorded by the microphone are in analogue.
7) Describe two benefits of using a digital camera over a film camera.
Ans: The benefits of a digital camera are that you can back up
any pictures you have taken with it so if you lose the pictures
you can retrieve it from the backup you can also see the image
immediately after it taken to judge if another picture needs to
be taken or the one already taken is perfect.
8) Describe how an interactive white board can be used to help a train staff
company.
Ans: A company could train their staff using an interactive
whiteboard by putting out techniques on how to do their work
efficiently including where they are posted, what work they
have to do what would be extra work for quicker customer
service and to create a bond with the customers and maybe
rules and regulations, when are breaks, etc.

9) Describe how a barcode works and what data they usually store.
Ans: A barcode has black and white vertical lines across it and
what reads it is a barcode scanner, it shines a red light on the
barcode with what is called an illuminator the sensor in the
barcode reader detects the reflected light from the barcode
which is an analog signal it is turned into a digital signal then
sent through a decoder, after it’s done decoding it’s sent to
the computer. They usually store product information so the
bar codes in products could used to easily identify the
products find it price and update the stock count of the
product after sold.
10) Explain how a 3D scanner works. Give an example in your answer.
Ans: A 3D scanner uses light rays or X rays to create a digital
model of whatever it is scanning. In 3D printer terms a physical
model or replica which for example is used in airports to check
if a person has any weapons or illegal/prohibited goods on
them.
