Good after everyone, today, I am going to present a poster in our study the “Perceived
Effects of Screen time to the Health of Bachelor of Science in Nursing Students: Basis
for Strategic Management for Maximum Learning”

METHODOLOGY

DESIGN- Quantitative descriptive

-Quantitative because we utilized frequency, percentage, and weighted mean and also,
data is presented in the table form.

Descriptive since it further describes the results of the data gathered.

LOCALE – Notre Dame of Marbel University, Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

Data Analysis – Researchers used quantitative methods like frequency and percentage
to analyze the gathered data especially for SOP #1, #2, #3, #4, For the perceived
effects or SOP 5, we used the Likert 5-point scale to analyze the data.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE- (READ)

DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE

AGE- The highest frequency is 96 with the percentage of 43% which is 19 years old.

GENDER- For the gender, there are 175 with 77.78% of female enrollees in nursing
the results shows that there are more female enrollees than male enrollees.

YEAR LEVEL- The 1st year nursing students get the frequency of 109 with a percentage
of 48.44%,

SCREEN TIME
ACADEMICS

The highest frequency is more than 8 hours with 175 (77.78%) and the results show
that the student spends beyond the recommended screen time each day. According to
Montemayor 2020, recommended online classes should be 6-8 hours each day with
breaks between classes.

LEISURE

The highest frequency is more than 3 hours 123 (54.67%). The results show that the
student spends more than the recommended screen time for leisure-based activities.
According to Twenge 2018, more than 3 hours of screen time for leisure-based activity
is too much, which can lead to health problems in the long run thus, the recommended
time should only be 2-3 hours.

PRIMARY USED GADGETS


ACADEMICS

The highest frequency is a laptop with 157 (69.78%) According to Harayto 2019, the
laptop has everything that is needed from messaging, access to online material, video
conferencing, paper works and storage. Which makes laptops an excellent choice for
online learning.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

The highest frequency is cell phones with 186 (82.67%). According to Indrakanti, et al.
2018, phones are the primary gadgets used for surfing and mobile games. Also, acc to
lepp 2020, it is commonly used because of convenience and people spend time on
different apps like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

DURATION OF SCREEN TIME USING THE PRIMARY GADGETS


LAPTOP

Based on the results 45.78% of the respondents used laptops for more than 8 hours
each day. According to Al-Balas, et al. 2020, laptops became the primary gadget during
online class due to their features which contribute to the longer screen time exposure
usually with a maximum of 12 hours of screen time exposure.

CELLPHONE
Based on the results 38.22% of the respondents used cellphone for more than 3 hours
for leisure activities. According to Puke, 2018, smartphone use between 3 to 5 hours
per day for communications and social networking.

HOURS SPENT WITH FAMILY AND PEERS

According to 1st, 2nd and 3rd year nursing students, most of the students spent only 1-2
hours of their time with their family and peers.
- Most of the respondents has 1-2 hours of interaction between family and peers
According to Zhaoyang et. al., (2018), The average social interaction is around
12 interactions with 6-8 hours of time spent every day to maintain healthy social
health.

HEALTH EFFECTS

PHYSIOLOGICAL

In overall the weighted mean for the neck and backpain is 4.5 which interpreted as
always. Meaning the students constantly experienced neck and back pain.

Therefore, the most students in all year level constantly experience neck and back pain
due to long hours of screen time.

According to the study of Lissak 2018, computer related activities are positively
associated with neck and back pain. As stated by Silva et al 2017, the use of gadgets
for more than 5hrs can increase pain in the neck and lower back.

PSYCHOLOGICAL
in overall the The question Do you procrastinate gained the highest weighted mean of
3.76 which interpreted as Often.
Therefore, most students in all year level regularly experience procrastination.
According to Twenge and Campbell, the long duration of screen time during leisure
time activities, academic purposes and psychological well-being has been conflicting to
each other where it resulted in some psychological problems,).

SOCIAL
In overall the question Do you still have a personal conversation with your family?” has
the highest mean of 3.66 which interpreted as often. Meaning the students regularly
experienced personal conversation with the family.

- Based on the results of nursing students it shows that most of them still have
time to have a personal conversation with their families despite having prolonged
screen time. According to Mullan et. al., (2019), theories accounts identified that
the influence of technology on family time is that it can bring family members
together while keeping them apart. (Next please).
