Use gw = 10 kN/m3

1. Consider a profile that consists of the following two layers. Top layer: 1.2 meter thick layer of clay with friction angle
= 36 degrees and undrained strength = 45 kPa. Bottom layer: 9 meter thick layer of clayey silt with friction angle =
40 degrees and undrained strength = 65 kPa. Draw the profile neatly.

2. A frame structure with two columns will constructed with a simple, bolted steel frame. The structural loads will be
supported by unembedded square footings for a design life of 50 years. There will be one footing per column. The
distance between the columns is 3m. Determine the allowable settlement for this structure, with knowledge of the
structure type.

3. Design the two footings for the site and structure described in problems 1 and 2 (above). Loads are:

Column #1 shall carry 180 kN and 70 kN-m.

Column #2 shall carry 200 kN and 60 kN-m.

The settlement of each footing must be less than or equal to the allowable settlement found in problem 2 (above).
The critical factor of safety for each footing must be equal to 3 or larger, but as small as possible. Clearly, footings
do not need to have the same size.

Turn in:

a. Either (1) a clear screenshot of your Excel design worksheet (make sure that I can read it after I print it), or (2)
hand calculations for the final design of both footings. If you submit an Excel worksheet screenshot, then submit
hand calculations only for the final design of the footing associated with column #1.

b. A table, typed neatly, with a computer, as follows (do not forget units):

Column 1 Column 2
design B (0.1m res.) design B (0.1m res.)
qmax value (if any) qmax value (if any)
value of net eccentricity e value of net eccentricity e
value of B/6 value of B/6
