The Property Entropy
1. Water initially a saturated liquid at 100oC is contained in a piston cylinder assembly. The water undergoes a
process to the corresponding saturated vapour state during which the piston moves freely in the cylinder. If the
change in state is brought about by heating the water as it undergoes an internally reversible process at
constant pressure and temperature, determine the work and heat transfer per unit of mass, each in kJ/kg. (170
kJ/kg, 2257 kJ/kg)

2. Steam in a closed system expands reversibly and isothermally from 180 oC, x = 0.65 to 500 kPa. Sketch the
process on pv and Ts diagrams. Calculate the work done. (214 kJ/kg)

3. Air in a cylinder is compressed reversibly and isothermally from 95 kPa, 25 oC to 290 kPa. The initial volume is
0.162 m3. Determine the work input, the heat transfer and the entropy change of the air being compressed. (-
17.2 kJ, -17.2 kJ, -0.056 kJ/K)

4. A closed system composed of five kilograms of carbon monoxide undergoes a reversible isentropic expansion
from 300 kPa, 500C to 150 kPa, Calculate the work done per kg of carbon monoxide. Use c p = 1.04 kJ/kgK and
cv = 0.744 kJ/kgK. (255 kJ/kg)

5. One-tenth kilogram of propane is heated at constant volume from 300 kPa, 60 0C, to 2800C, compressed
reversibly and adiabatically to 1.4 MPa, and then cooled under constant volume conditions to 110 0C. Determine
the change in entropy for the individual steps and for the complete series of the steps. Use c p = 1.67 kJ/kgK
and cv = 1.48 kJ/kgK (0.03774 kJ/K, 0, -0.03605 kJ/K, 0.00169 kj/K)

6. A system of 2 kg water is initially saturated liquid water at a pressure of 10 MPa. Heat from a reservoir at a
temperature of 800 K is added to this system at a constant pressure until the final state of the system is
saturated vapour at a pressure of 10 MPa. Compute ∆S for the system and ∆S for the universe for this process.
(4.509 kJ/K, 1.216 kJ/K)
