Just awful.

I hope she gets the support she needs, and is placed somewhere she is properly protected.

How on earth could they not notice she was pregnant, that’s extraordinary.

There is a weird phenomenon called a cryptic, denied or stealth pregnancy. It can be

caused by hormonal imbalances or psychological issues. Essentially the woman does not
have the typical symptoms of a pregnancy. It happens to about 1 in 500 pregnancies but
is very common in pregnancies that are the result of incest.

Having read Tressa’s autobiography, her family life was and continued to be absolute
chaos.

I don’t understand how the rape and the baby going into care are connected

Maybe she could only keep it if they thought she had good, supportive parents to help
(but this suggests they missed something major)

True, but something like that is very easy to not know. Also there are mother and
baby foster places for teenage mums like her.

Obviously we don’t know the full details but the way the article is writing does not
suggest that the social workers followed the law in my opinion

The article is sparse on details but the rest of the story has been published by
mainstream news sites (none of which I'm linking to because they don't deserve
the revenue). The reasons her daughter were taken into care were completely
valid if you wanted to read up she has done several interviews. A terrible
situation all around but her life appears to have changed for the better now.

I guess if her rapist brother was still in the household that would make it unsafe.

This is better than it was. Some women were committed to mental hospital
(sometimes for life) for getting pregnant outside of marriage.

Yes I’m aware but the reason given in the article for the child’s removal is
essentially illegal

My friends 15yr old sister gave birth in their bathroom on a school night.

She didn't tell anyone and was pretty much in denial about it. The only changes anyone
noticed were your average teenage girl, hormonal body changes.

An 11yr old may not have started having regular periods and any hormonal changes
would be kind of expected as normal growth.

I hope that in this case the conception was fully consensual with a similarly aged boy
(leaving aside the moral debate about age of consent) and wasn't forced upon her in any
way.

I am highly sceptical about the idea people don’t know they are pregnant until giving
birth. I think it’s likely denial, and not knowing what to do about it. Thinking if they
ignore it the problem will maybe go away.

It actually happened to a friend of mine. She didn't realise until she was 7 months
pregnant. Only found out cause she collapsed and got rushed to hospital.

Happened to an old school friend of mine too, didn't know until the 7 month
mark. Same with my MIL who had my SO young, didn't realise until 7 months
in. My MIL said she still had "normal periods" but I think that's a fib and had
spotting at the beginning of the pregnancy and thought it was a period.

I'm genuinely curious, when you say she didn't realise...do you mean everything
was normal or was she still experiencing something but just didn't put it down
to being pregnant?

I just can't fathom how anyone can be 7 months pregnant without feeling
anything.

9  Reply Share 

If periods are irregular due to underlying conditions then it's likely that a
few months no period wouldn't be unusual for some.

If the placenta develops at the front of the uterus, baby's movements can go
unnoticed. Likely you'd just think you had bad wind as a lot of movements,
especially earlier on do feel like wind.

Just a couple of ways someone can get to 7+ months without realising.

A friend of mine learned she was having a baby when in labour; she'd been taken
to A&E with suspected acute appendicitis. There was no reason for her to pretend
or ignore any of it, she just genuinely did not realise (history of very irregular
cycles, we were living the party life at the time so sickness and aches weren't
exactly a rare feature, and honestly, she never looked pregnant). If you're not
expecting to feel foetal movement you could definitely put any felt down to bad
indigestion- my youngest is six and even now I still think 'is that a baby in there?'
when there is air bubbling around my gut, the sensation can be that similar- plus if
you have an anterior placenta it can really reduce the sensation of movement at
all.

Littleloula · 13h

Its definitely a legit thing that women can be unaware they are pregnant. If the
placenta is in front its a lot harder to feel the movements, plus some women
always have irregular periods, think they have entered menopause, etc. Not
everyone gets a noticeable bump. Maybe some are as you say but some are
definitely genuine

Heres a good article about it

You're absolutely right

14 yo patient gave birth in the out of hours Doctor's surgery. She was unaware
it was a pregnancy, the family weren't concerned that she'd been in the loos for
½ hour. The balling neonate woke them up though. Poor kid. Hope she and the
baby are doing better

From watching the trash reality tv series, it seemed a lot of women were told they
were infertile and also didn’t really start showing at all or until very late, and
therefore they attributed the symptoms to other things.

How on earth could they not notice she was pregnant, that’s extraordinary.

Depends on the size of the body, surface fat and so on.

I don't know much about this case but prima facie it smacks of a lack of parental care or
oversight. Is it possible that an overweight underage girl is pregnant without anybody
noticing - the age here is in unusual but it definitely happens.

I hope her and her baby get the help and care they need. Lots will surely be made of her
circumstances (even I took a guess without knowing!) but we have to be more about the
people than their circumstances, and goodness knows these people need a lot of help
right now.

FWIW, I had a combination of growth spurt and change in metabolism when I was
around 14, I had previously had a couple of periods like ever, but never anything
regular, and over the space of a few months I put on quite a bit of weight, and my
breasts went up about 4 cup sizes.

It didn't go unnoticed, but it was put down (correctly, thankfully) to other factors in my
life. Had I been having sex at the time I definitely could have been pregnant and not
realised.

A lot of pregnancy symptoms are typical of puberty / adolescence and could be easily
overlooked - erratic periods, weight gain, breast growth, mood swings etc.

Yeah, look up precocious puberty. It is possible for puberty to start at a very young
age.

Here's a wikipedia article of the youngest known mothers. It is interesting that the
human body can even do this, but all of these are grim and horrible.

I have to say the story of that Tressa Middleton, who is mentioned in the article, is so tragic.
Much of her pain could have been avoided. Perhaps not the rape by her brother, but all that
happened afterwards.

Despite DNA evidence proving her brother is the father of her oldest child, not one family
member stood beside her or believed her.

Then, when her mother died, her brother was actually there carrying the coffin. What an
absolute disgusting joke. She even said she forgives him as it is what her mother would
have wanted. In my opinion, her mother was a scumbag for even wanting that in the first
place. She should have stood by her daughter, who was 11 for crying out loud when her
brother raped her.

The brother was sentenced to FOUR YEARS in prison. Four years. Absolutely disgusting.

She probably didn't go through childbirth. Probably had a ceasarian. Traumatic enough,
but nothing like childbirth at such an age.
