What was expected? Greggs is cheap. When money is tight for lots of people, Greggs will do
well.

Not just cheap but good. If you're out of town and don't know which local bakeries are
worth going to then Greggs is pretty reliable.

I have literally never lived anywhere that had a local bakery. If I want a pasty or a
sausage roll I either have to make it myself (fuck that) or go to greggs.

I travel the U.K. and make a point of trying somewhere local each time; I used to stick
to chains because they were easy to find, you knew what to expect and are usually
cheaper but since the pandemic I’ve realised how much harder these small places
need to work to stay afloat and how much they value and depend on their customers.

Turns out if you have internet access it’s not difficult to find the indie places people
rave about. Apps like Deliveroo and UberEats all have a rating system as well which
can be handy if you don’t know where to begin.

Some examples I’ve found - Smorls in Brighton (vegan & hummus), Yard Sale Pizza in
London (fresh pizzas), Sprigg in Glasgow (salads/veggie), The Bristol Loaf (bakery in
Bristol), Copper Pot in Sheffield (cafe), Chuchos in Newcastle (authentic tacos) and
Makars Mash Bar in Edinburgh (mashed potato!) all of which have blown me away.

They’re not always more expensive either, usually the same price as a McMeal or hot
drinks often no more than a Costa, but you have to appreciate that it’s paying
someone’s real wages, there’s no wealthy CEO pocketing several million each year
plus a bonus, taxes being fiddled left right & centre, just normal people trying to
make an honest living.

I feel like this is partly my fault. I'd not had a sausage roll in a few years before I holidayed in
Cornwall last month and obviously got a couple of proper Cornish pastries when I was there
and ever since coming home I've been trying to fill the void.

A bunch of bakeries down here will ship you pasties for home cooking - definitely worth
looking into if you're struggling to fill said void.

Same here. I hadn't been to Greggs in years and then I got a new job two weeks ago
where I have to commute into London and I keep seeing Greggs on my lunch breaks
every now and then and pop in.

surprising.

I've always found that any bakery sells bread and similar foods (or sandwiches) that is so
much better than any supermarket. Greggs is cheap and generally the worst of the
bakery type stores - but that still puts it in an entirely different category of quality for
lunch time bakery-style food compared to the other supermarket style options.

We had a Warren's in my town for about a year and that was lovely!! Their pasties
were leaps and bounds better than Gregg's

Oh yeah if you can go to a propper bakery you'll get better quality no denying that.
And your right you've got more stuff for dinner at Gregg's and let's face it especially in
winter the sometimes warm options are brilliant.

Think they opened up their market with vegan options. I'm not a vegan but started eating
their vegan sausage rolls because I can be sure it's not made of pig arseholes. They're pretty
good.

The vegan sausage rolls are far less greasy as well because they don't have the fat
sweating through it. So you spend the rest of the day not sliding about on your own
keyboard.

The real meat ones contain gristle as well. Nothing like chowing down on a
questionable meat product only to be met with half-chummed anal gland.

As a complete and utter food snob, they're the only thing I'll buy from them and I'll
admit they're not bad.

Am vegan, do prefer the steak bake. What I like the most about the vegan options
though is not biting into my meal and coming down on a rubbery piece of fat or
chewy piece of gristle. So hype for the vegan sausage baps.

I would be more interested how the recovery is going for small local cafes. Big investor
backed chain will have a greater chance of survival. Maybe people buy there, because
smaller businesses folded?

Maybe I live in a vacuum but Greggs isn't cheap. It's very low quality at an average or

you are getting. It's merely convenient. 
There isn't one near me but Pound Bakery shit on them and unlike Greggs their
sausages/bacon aren't so inedible that they make want to vomit.

When you compare it to pret or costa then sure it's 'cheaper' but compare it to an
independent bakery or hell even some items in a supermarket and it's expensive as fuck in
the North!

From the internal figures I've seen the prices are only high because of staffing and
management issues and the custom being underwhelming outside of breakfast time.

Greggs being cheap is about as comically incorrect as saying the same for McDonalds or
Subway. If you think their prices are fair you've simply fallen for the marketing or don't have
alternatives (which is likely given rent prices).

but compare it to an independent bakery

The only two independent bakeries near me are doing fancy stuff. They are £3 for a
single sausage roll or £1.50 for a single Eccles cake. Sure they have fancy ingredients but,
if you want a cheap plain no frills sausage roll then your only choices are Greggs or the
Supermarket.
