Module 4-SA4: Pinagtagpo Ngunit Hindi Tinadhana (“Vow”)

Jollibee has been producing and launching commercials that depict a typical
Filipino moment and occurrence in which we can all identify. Jollibee's "Vow," which
was published four years ago as part of their Valentine's Series in 2017, is one of them.
This commercial has dealt with romance from the beginning until the end, when the guy
has been friend zoned as the girl he liked married another man. It was a true story, just
as Jollibee claims, and it's a shame they weren't able to be together considering the
commercial's sequence of clips showing the guy doing all the hard work and effort for
the woman.

Taking into account the itsy range used in the advert, the actor and actress in the
video seemed to be in their college days at the start of the film, but as the story
progressed, they both evolved into young professionals who’s been sticking with each
other. as they were apparently best friends. With the fact that they had a grand
wedding, the car that the woman was driving, and the university field featured where the
guy was holding tons of books with his laptop slung over his shoulder, they both seem
to come from well-off respective families. Both seem to have the chemistry, and it's
obvious because of how compatible they were with the perceived similar status that had
been developed from the start, right from the moment they ordered food at the same
counter, to how their personalities mingle.

In certain cases, the way the guy has portrayed Filipino men seems to be right.
To vouch for myself, I have a friend who was in the same situation, which means that
the story in the commercial is not an isolated incident, and that's why I believe it's a
reflection of how romantic and how Filipino men can let go of their loved ones by
accepting the title of best friends. We can't make it work for the entire population of
Filipino citizens, however, but some are willing to go outside their comfort zones to fight
for what they care about. On the other hand, the way he has stayed and been with the
woman while deferring sacrifice simply demonstrates how Filipino men have seen their
position as protecting those who truly matter. That's how "cheesy" it sounds. The same
can be said for the girl's character and portrayal; she has been portrayed as a typical
working modern Filipina who has been attempting to establish herself on her own. A
substantive resolution that emphasizes women's equality in some way.

The way that the commercial has actually made us believe that the man is in love
with the woman is because of their script, especially that line from the beginning of the
clip that screams romantic excitement, stating, “It was in Jollibee. I told myself, she’s the
one.” Combine it with the statement, “From that day onwards, I already know you’re the
one I want to spend the rest of my life with. So to you I make this promise that I will be
the man for you,” and a slew of other lines, seemingly everything on the script, pound
how the man sees the girl as a beloved other half in the future. Furthermore, his actions
from beginning to end really establish the plot that he is in love with the girl. The girl's
movements, on the other hand, seem to be in sync with how the guy feels. Despite the
fact that she has no lines or scripts, her manner of dealing and handling the guy gives
the impression that she is also in love with him. However, we must always see the
larger picture, just as the script writer did when he conceptualized the whole plot, in
which love is defined as sacrifice, love is unconditional, and love is defined as letting
someone go in order to make them happy, even if that happiness does not explicitly
involve you.

On a personal note, I found the ending to be heartbreaking simply because it is

well-tailored from the start that the characters are in love. But I like how it ended
because it described a different kind of love, not just the kind we see in movies and
other dramas where two people are in love from start to finish. It's just that, because of
the way we were set up to the environment and mood of them having such a passionate
bond, I haven't seen any indication that it would work out the way it did. Even if I were
given the opportunity to alter or rewrite the ending, I would still stick with the original,
which Jollibee conceptualized, because the unusual plot twist adds to the effect. Given
that it is an advertisement for Jollibee goods, the effect is enormous and serves its
purpose. The video promoted Jollibee goods in its entirety, as several settings of the
clips took place in Jollibee, and the characters' first meeting took place there as well. It
also goes to show how Jollibee is witness to a lot of significant incidents, and how it can
be a part of these situations, which may seem to be mundane, but are very sentimental
and remarkable to the individuals. As a result, the commercial succeeded in conveying
the message that Jollibee is a magical place where love and friendship can be found
and nurtured.
