Ryterna modul Architectural Challenge 2020: Vacation House
I. COMPETION ORGANAIZER - JSC “Ryterna modul”

II. COMPETITION FORM – Open competition.


COMPETITION THEME – to design a modular vacation house (getaway house for summer and winter vacation) for
family of two persons for constant living and possibility to accommodate up to two additional guest for short stays. As
an additional building to the house, Sauna building is planned in the future. All buildings should be based on modular
construction

III. Family description - Our project family is a family of 2. Affected by COVID19 situation family decided to have
a getaway home somewhere in more remote location from city. Ideally, they want to have a vacation home
next to a lake surrounded by forest and with great distance from nearest homes. They are considered a
middle class with skew to the upper class family, their income is 3000eur per month (36k EUR per year) –
average family income in 3 Baltic states (based on 2019 data) at their capitals are: Vilnius, Lithuania -
1360eur; Riga, Latvia – 1425eur and Tallinn, Estonia – 2053eur.

Characters:
Peter - 35 years old;
Lisa - 34 years old.

Family specifics:
Peter works as mid-level sales manager at one of international companies based in Lithuania, after COVID19 –
company now looks openly to his position and allows him to work from home 3 working days per week, and he has
to schedule meetings and visits with clients for the rest of two days. Current opportunity would allow him to switch
city lifestyle to a more remote location and enjoy summer next to a lake rather than a city heat, he could deal with
less comfortable living conditions, as he sees “Spartan” - comfortless living as an attraction, yet he agrees that for
extensive living comfort is somewhat important. He is keen on active outdoors lifestyle hiking, camping, bike riding,
canoeing.
Lisa works as a business consultant, often has business meetings in different geographical locations and web
meetings as well. Therefore, she does not care if she lives in city or in summerhouse much, as she has to travel to her
client meetings or have them from home. Yet she is more city lifestyle person and requires all comfort features in
the house.

Family house location: Family is in search for good location for their new vacation house, land has to have these
attributes: trees/forest surrounding land and has to be next to the lake.

Family transport: 2 cars

About the HOUSE and Sauna – house can be arrange as you wish, number of rooms is unlimited. House can be
created as single or two stories high building. It can feature flat or sloping roof.
Based on recent EU requirements, house has to be designed, as close to a passive house as possible, meaning that
energy used by the house for its heating, cooling has to be as low as possible or at least come from renewable
resource from the onsite renewable resource generators (for example – solar or wind energy). House should be no
more than 35 sq.m.

Sauna – should feature hot room and anteroom for cooling down while sitting. Sauna should be no bigger than
15sq.m. and additional terrace with bridge to the lake. Sauna is heated buy burning wood.

IV. COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS

1. Competitor has to design a house and sauna for project family to live in featuring all essential areas for comfortable
living for two people. As well as accommodate two weekend guest.
2. Competitor is required to present visualizations of the house and sauna in their chosen area. Visualizations should
feature inside and outside views of buildings to be considered for final prize, as an addition house could be rendered in
City environment as a stand alone hotel room.
3. House should be usable all year round (in Eastern Europe geographical location)
4. House can be expanded in both directions – vertically or horizontally.
5. House should not exceed 35sq.m. of usable space inside (all space from inside walls are subject to the size), Sauna
usable space should not exceed 15sq.m.
6. House has to be designed to be made of SIP panels (wooden panels with insulating materials), only bottom part of the
module will feature metal construction – as an example our Wood3.0 module featuring similar construction
7. Dimensions of one modular unit should not exceed 10000mm(L)x4000mm(W)x3300mm(H), but could be smaller than
given dimension.
8. Each module has to be transportable

V. COMPETITION AIM

1. From all contestants, organizer will pick three best works based on: originality/attractiveness of the architectural
solution, the architectural appearance, functionality and the ability to adjust proposed modules to production. All these
criteria are equivalent

2. The three winning projects will be awarded the main prize:

Ist place – 1 000 EUR

IInd place – 500 EUR

IIIrd place – 250 EUR

VI. RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS FOR PARTICIPANT

1. Participants can enter a competition as one person or as a group of maximum of 5 people.


2. Until the end of 2020 July 31st (23:59 EET/UTC+2h) provide PDF drawings and design visualization, consisting of the
unlimited number of pages of A1 format sheets (all four outside sides of house and sauna, cross-section displaying
interior design, general house floor plan layout has to be visible). Cross-sections of technical points not required.
3. Works in two files are presented in digital format for one printing and another one for viewing. File should be
submitted using one of the following cloud sharing services: wetransfer.com; myairbridge.com; Dropbox; Google drive
or similar. High-quality works have to be provided in PDF format (300dpi) for printing and a small format file has to be
provided for general viewing. All sheets has to be merged to single file for printing and another file for viewing.
4. Final work has to have ID number on the first page of the file, consisting of your project title no longer than 10 digits
that are 10mm in height. File has to be sent from the email address you registered during registration to the
competition. All works and their corresponding documents has to be submitted to vainius.g@rmodul.com containing
your project ID number.
5. Author’s names and contacts must not be visible on presented final work PDF.
6. If needed hardcopies, CD/USB flash drives, in envelopes with the name "modular building design contest” shall be sent
to UAB “Ryterna modul” Agronomijos g. 45 LT-47480, Kaunas, Lithuania

VII. EVALUATION OF THE WINNERS

1. Evaluation and winner selection is carried by jury, which consist of “Ryterna modul” employees represented by the
company director and the two independent architects and possible investor of the restaurant.

2. The jury will evaluate the works in a closed meeting in accordance with the following criteria:
• Architectural solution originality;
• Architectural appeal;
• Functionality;
• Ability to adjust proposed modules to production.
 Cost saving solutions, use of proposed materials, design simplicity in regards to constructions
 Communication lines and ability to reproduce other components.

3. Competition dates:
 End of registration by 2020 June 30th
 Submission of the final work - 2020 July 31st (23:59 EET/UTC+2h)
 Competition results announcement: 2020 August 21st

VIII. COMPETITION ORGANIZER RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. During the competition organizer might advise participants on all technical issues.
2. Organizer rewards first three place winners by signing a contract of sale with winners for their provided competition
material.
3. The organizer reserves the right to publicize all material of the progress of the competition, as well as to post or
otherwise share the works of the contestants with the general public at the end of the competition.
4. If it appears that the work is not original, it will be withdrawn from the competition.
5. The organizer reserves the right to use the visuals of projects on their website as well as a range of promotional
material, identifying the author of the project. The organizer will also gain the right to manufacture a building according
to the winner's project, firstly arranging acquisition agreement or other type of reward to the project author.
