To expand your knowledge and for additional information read this article about Nail Care.

It is important that you educate you customers on nail care, so that they have a smooth and strong
foundation to create the perfect manicure. After all, when was it ever pretty to paint over cracked and
uneven nails? Here are a five tips we have for you to share:

• Avoid acetone polish removers

Yes, acetone polish removers work more efficiently at removing polishes, but this solvent is also very
harsh for the nails as it strips its oils and causes it to become brittle. Nails that are brittle are more likely
to split/break and can be more susceptible to infection! Non-Acetone polish removers use less
aggressive solvents (e.g. ethyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol and propylene carbonate) and are usually
enforced with moisturizing ingredients to minimize its drying effects. Let the customer know that non-
acetone polish removers will require more effort to use but in the long run, is less damaging to the nails.

• Stay moisturized!
Especially after removing nail polish, advise the customer to always moisturize their nail beds and
cuticles right after. This will help improve the appearance of their nails and help protect them from
breaking due to the lack of moisture. Using cuticle oil is a great way to keep the entire nail moisturized
and reduce the chance of chipping, cracking and splitting.

• Limit the contact with cleaning chemicals

This includes over-washing your hands and doing certain house chores. Again, the nails are stripped of
its oils when they are frequently in contact with cleaning chemicals. If the customer is in a profession
that requires frequent hand washing, suggest that they use a hand moisturizer as often as possible.
Also, no, this does not mean avoid doing any house chores (especially dish-washing), but instead,
suggest that the customer minimize their contact with these harsh chemicals by wearing rubber gloves.

• Avoid using rough emery boards

Those orange, sandpaper-textured emery boards? Toss them out, because they're too harsh for the
nails! They can cause small fissures and cracks that eventually lead to nail breakage. Recommend that
the customer use a smooth and fine file instead, and file their nails in one direction only to avoid
breakage.

• Change shampoos
You heard us right. Yes, we know shampoo is for the hair. No we're not pulling your leg. If the customer
uses shampoo for oily hair, designed to strip natural oils from the scalp, it will also strip the natural oils
from the nails. If a customer comes in with dry nails and they don't know why, this may be the cause of
it. You may be able to show them a different shampoo that is less harsh, but with the same benefits as
