Short answer type questions:

SECTION-B
Long answer type questions:
1. A refrigeration system is working on reversed Carnot cycle between higher and lower
temperatures of 40oC and -30oC respectively. Determine its COP. It is desired to increase
the COP of the cycle to 4.75 by changing the temperature of the cycle. If the increase (or
decrease) in higher temperature is equal to the decrease (or increase) in lower
temperature, calculate the new temperatures of the cycle. (KME-601.1)

2. Compare open and closed refrigeration system. Describe a Bell Coleman or reverse Joule
air refrigeration cycle with a neat sketch. Derive an expression for COP of an air
refrigeration system working on Bell Coleman cycle. (KME-601.1)

3. Refrigerating machine working between the temperature limits of -13 °C and 37 °C and
has 90% relative COP. It consumes 4.8 kW power. Determine TR capacity. For same TR
capacity, how much power will be consumed by carnot refrigerator? (KME-601.1)

4. A simple air cooled system is used for an aeroplane having a load of 10 tones. The
atmospheric pressure and temperature are 0.9 bar and 10°C respectively. The pressure
increases to 1.013 bar due to ramming. The temperature of the air is reduced by 50°C in
the heat exchanger. The pressure in the cabin is 1.01 bar and the temperature of air
leaving the cabin is 25°C.
Determine :
1 Power required to take the load of cooling in the cabin; and
2. C.O.P. of the system.
Assume that all the expansions and compressions are isentropic. The pressure of the
compressed air is 3.5 bar. (KME-601.1)
