Timeline in the History of Robotics

You can begin to see the human development and ingenuity that have led to the
development and led to the marvelous 21st century, that is the robot. The robots used in our
homes, entertainment and industry are not the result of the last few decades, but are the
pinnacle of centuries of the human effort to create something astounding. Acquire knowledge of
some of the captivating events that have helped trace the history of robotics.

     Activity 1. History of Robotics

Estimated Time to Complete: Allow 4 hours for research and documentation (1 Week)

Objectives:
1. Discussing the ground-roots and the development of robotics technology
2. Trace, the events in the history of robotics

Materials: Pictures of invented robots through time

Procedure:
    1. To begin, trace the time of events, this timeline marks a number of robotics historic
moments of the over and done with developments that have configured the world of robots and
robotics technology. Follow the history of robotics from its deferential but insightful onset right
through to the precise futuristic AI robots. While examining the events presented in the timeline.
I encourage you to review them all and research any that catch your interest.

1801 Joseph-Marie Jacquard He invents an automated loom

1961 George Devol Unimate was the very first

industrial robot. Come up with a
machine-like-arm licensed in
1954 (granted in 1961) by
American inventor George Devol,
the Unimate was advanced as an

1998 LEGO Introduces MIndstorms Inc.,

the popular system for Robotics
Education. (Mortensen,2012)

2000 NASA Produces the first version of

Robonaut, a dexterous robot
designed to work with
astronauts. (Canright,2012)

2012 Rethink Robotics Releases Baxter, a low-cost

humanoid torso-typed to be
easily taught tasks, work safely
around humans, and require
minimal set-up straight out of

future for 21st century robotics.
Questions:

1. Describe what automatons are? (3pts)

- An automaton is a self-acting robot which behaves in a repetitive or predetermined
fashion. Pierre Jaquet-Droz, a famous Swiss watchmaker, created three automatons
in his life. One of these, which he created in the 1770's, is know simply as The
Writer.
2. What is the oldest Robot in the world? (1pt)
- Automaton
3. Identify different robot concepts in toys created in history. (5 points)
- Lego Mindstorms EV3 is a set that lets you build and program five starter robot
models. A programmable power brick, plus servo motors and color, touch, and
infrared sensors, help the robot move and communicate.
- VEX 123 is an interactive, programmable robot that takes Computer Science and
Computational Thinking off of the screen and brings them into the hands of
elementary students. Grades 3-4. VEX GO is an affordable STEM construction
system that taps into children's natural inquisitiveness.
4. Describe the influence of Joseph Marie Jacquard’s invention in robotics.
- He was the Michael Jordan of robotics he wasn’t the first one to do it but he was the
greatest to do it. He was the standards of other inventors.
5. After examining the events presented in the timeline, research any (at least three) that
catch your interest and explain. Write your answers on your writing pad.
- I was interested in Baxter, Robonaut and Lego Robots. They were the only ones
that were capable of doing some advanced stuff and they were made with a lot of time and
patience

6. Update the timeline. Write the title as an Advanced Development of

Robots. (10 points)
