PARTS OF A COMPLETE GUIDE QUESTIONS IN WRITING A COMPLETE ACTION

ACTION RESEARCH RESEARCH

TITLE OF ACTION Increasing the Academic Performance of SHS Learners Through

RESEARCH Project CHAT MO (Collecting and Harvesting Activities Through
Messanger On-time)
I. INTRODUCTION The way individuals communicate has changed dramatically as a
result of technological advancements. The telephone initially took the
place of the telegraph. Cell phones, email, and the Internet are now the
most popular modes of communication. Society appears to have
accepted, if not embraced, the greater role technology currently plays in
everyday life as more businesses and educational institutions use
technology to communicate.
Cachia, (2018) strongly adhered that the increase in the number
of social networking sites (SNS) and their pervasiveness in everyday
life is having an impact how social networks are managed in Western
societies SNS have changed societal norms to a large extent.
In addition to being one of the latest examples of communications
technologies that have been widely adopted by students, social
networking sites (SNSs) such as Facebook have the potential to
become a great resource for supporting their educational interactions
and collaborations with teachers. Moreover, Facebook’s chat feature
proves to be the easiest and cheapest means of communication that a
teacher may use during this new normal curriculum.
In this light, the researcher crafted this study to make use of
Facebook Chat as a mean in increasing the academic performance of
SHS Maritime learners.
A. Research Questions The main objective of this research is to assess the effectiveness of
Project CHAT MO in Increasing the academic performance of SHS
Learners. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following
research questions:
1. What is Project CHAT MO?
2. What is the level of perceptions of the Grade 11 Maritime
Learners in the effectiveness of Project CHAT MO in terms of:
2.1 reliability;
2.3 functionality;
2.4 accuracy
3. What are the problems encountered by the respondents in the
implementation of Project CHAT MO?

individual's learning outcomes, according to Bandura's Social Learning

Theory (1997). This study will benefit from the understanding of
Bandura's Social Learning Theory (SLT), which will aid in the
comprehension of two components of the work, which are social media
usage for educational purposes and academic success. Essentially,
according to Ainin et al. (2016), the Social Learning Theory outlines
how the environmental and cognitive aspects of an individual interact
together to cause a change in their behavior and learning pattern.
Furthermore, learning is a social process in which individuals self-
initiate, direct their own learning, and make a purposeful attempt to gain
knowledge by their own efforts, including creating and bringing together
information (Schunk, 2016).
Moreover, Student-to-student learning is based on the premise
that students learn from one another through observation, imitation, and
modeling, which results in positive learning outcomes. In accordance
with Bandura's Social Learning Theory, that students' use of social
media for educational purposes will aid them in the acquisition of skills
and knowledge that will help them improve their academic performance.

Figure 1. Conceptual Paradigm

Figure 1 shows the Input-Process-Output (IPO) of the academic

performance of SHS Grade 11 Maritime learners through Project CHAT
MO. The input of the study would be the concepts related to Project
CHAT MO and the perceptions of learners in the effectiveness of the
project. Therefore, its process shall be the review of related literature,
construction of instrument, data gathering, data analysis, data
interpretation and crafting of project design. As final output, the
researcher shall implement and monitor the project.

SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Tuckman (2017), defines performance as a person's outward

demonstration of his or her understanding of concepts, skills, ideas, and
information. He asserted that grades are a clear reflection of a student's
overall achievement.
As a result, students' academic performance must be carefully
monitored and supervised, taking into consideration all of the elements
that can either positively or negatively impact their academic success.
Academic performance, according to Kobal and Musek (2017), is
defined as a student's knowledge, which represents the degree of his or
her adaptation to schoolwork and the educational system as stated in

numerical terms.
The term "social media usage" refers to the variety of online
activities that individuals can engage in (Smith and Gallicano, 2016). On
the other hand, in terms of social media usage intentions, Oye and
colleagues (2016), conducted a survey with Malaysian students in the
use of social networking sites its effect on their academic performance
revealed that the use of social networking sites for exclusively social
and non-academic purposes has a detrimental influence on academic
achievement. Lau (2017), evaluated the use of social media by students
in Hong Kong whereas the consequences of media and social
multitasking on academic achievement. He stated that the application of
academic use of social media was not found to be a significant predictor
of academic performance. Moreover, The usage of social media for
non-academic objectives has been shown to have a detrimental effect
on academic achievement.

INSTANT MESSAGING AND CHATBOT AS A MEANS OF

LEARNING

Along with the allure of instant messaging, chatbots and

pedagogical agents have inspired educators to use messaging tools
into teaching and learning during the last few years. Coniam (Coniam,
2016) analyzed five well-known language chatbots and concluded that
while they are not yet robust talking partners, they have progressed
dramatically, with three of the five operating satisfactorily at the
grammar level. Ethnobot according to Tallyn, et, al. (2018) is a chatbot
that takes the position of a human ethnographer, collects ethnographic
data, and queries people in a chat format. Additionally, chatbot
technology has demonstrated promise as a teaching and learning tool
in distant and online education (Heller et, al 2016). Two educational
chatbots designed on the Facebook Messenger platform assist students
with the fundamentals and intermediate levels of accounting. The
majority (72 percent of users) indicated satisfaction with using chatbots
as virtual teachers on an overall basis. Crutzen (2016) and colleagues'
study examined how adolescents interacted with a chatbot that
answers inquiries about sex, drugs, and alcohol, in comparison to
information phone lines and search engines.
III. SCOPE AND The researcher focused on the Grade 11 Maritime students of
LIMITATIONS Lamon Bay School of Fisheries since he is the adviser of the said class.
The Covid 19 pandemic serves as a great challenge since the
researcher cannot meet the class on a face-to-face basis. Another
limitation of the study was the problem of internet connection and lack
of cellphone data of the researcher and respondents.
IV. METHODOLOGY Research Design

This study used the descriptive method of research. Descriptive

design is utilized in describing the level of perception of the respondents
towards the effectiveness of the project and the problems encountered
in the implementation of the project. The said design are believed to be
appropriate in determining and describing quantitative data.

The quantitative method through the use of survey questionnaire

allowed the researcher to gather quantitative data to determine and
describe the efficiency of the project.

Research Locale

The researcher chooses Lamon Bay School of Fisheries of Brgy.

San Vicente, Gumaca, Quezon to be the locale of his study. This
reason is evident since the researcher is presently working as a SHS
Teacher II of said institution.

Research Instrument

The researcher used a three-part questionnaire as his research

instrument. The first part was intended to showcase the concepts
related to the project. Then, part II dealt with the respondents’
perceptions on the effectiveness of the project. Lastly, part III was on
the problems related to the project,
Moreover, in the instrument, multiple response checklist was used
and to determine the effectiveness and problems related to Project
CHAT MO, likert type of questionnaire was utilized.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers asked for approval from the school principal. It

was to know whether or not the study will be accepted. Afterwards, self-
validation was employed for further corrections and revisions to be
made before conducting the research.

After the reviewing of the accuracy of the methods to be used.

When the study was approved, the researcher started working on his
questionnaire basing their questions on the concepts they’ve found. The
researchers used related questions to be able to achieve the respective
goal of their study.

Likewise, after the questionnaire has been made, the researcher

distributed the questionnaire to the respondents through social media
(FB/messenger specifically). The researcher collected the data after
distributing the questionnaire to the respondents. He analyzed the
results and interpreted the data needed for the study through narratives.

Statistical Treatment

The researcher used the statistical measure and tool in

summarizing, presenting, analyzing and interpreting the data gathered.

To answer problems 2 and 3 that pertains to the level of

perceptions of the effectiveness of Project CHAT MO and the problems
related to the said endeavor, Weighted Average Mean (WAM) was

respondents towards the effectiveness of the project with highest
frequency rate. Likewise, the researcher employed the 5-point Likert
scale indicators to interpret the numerical figures.
V. RESULTS AND I. CONCEPTS RELATED TO PROJECT CHAT MO
DISCUSSION
Social media plays a critical role in our culture, particularly during
pandemic season. The majority of us use Facebook as a substitute for
email and as an e-learning platform. After the proclamation of class
suspension on March 16, 2020, there is no method to hold face-to-face
class instruction or rather the traditional classroom. As an alternative
and easiest way to communicate with learners, Facebook Group Chats
can be used in the learning process.
The researcher devised Project CHAT MO for students to have an
easy access with the digital lectures from FB Group Chat. Furthermore,
the main objective of this project is to finds ways for learners to
understand, analyze and contribute to the learning process in the new
normal curriculum.

II. LEVEL OF PERCEPTIONS OF THE RESPONDENTS IN THE

EFFECTIVENESS OF PROJECT CHAT MO

Table 1

Table 1 shows the effectiveness of PROJECT CHAT MO in terms

of its reliability. With 4.83 as weighted mean, it shows that the
students agree that the project encourages students to share their
thoughts or opinions. It is one of the main reasons why students keep
using Facebook in their daily lives. Facebook is one of the most popular
social networking sites popular social networking sites (Khan, 2016).

Similarly, some students don’t want to share their knowledge or

opinions in a face-to-face manner. Some consider using Facebook and
become themselves behind technologies. (Computers, tablets, smart
phones) Pempek et. al. (2016) reported that about 55% of Facebook
users log into Facebook website several times a day to integrate their
thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Table 2 shows the effectiveness of PROJECT CHAT MO terms of

its functionality. According to Chua (2016), functionality is a set of
attributes that bears on the existence of a set of functions and their
specified properties; the functions are those satisfy stated or implied
needs. They also cited that functionality is the essential purpose of any
product or services. The respondents agreed that the project is
relevant to the need of students as functionality is concern with a
weighted mean of 4.96. Baltzan & Philips (2018) supported that web
services must contain repertoire of web-based data and procedural
resources that used protocols and standards permitting different
application to share data and services that are used to transmit and
process information on and across a network.

Table 3

Table 3 displays the Effectiveness of the project in terms of

Accuracy, having the composite mean of 4.91 the respondents strongly
agreed that the project can collaborate with their teachers/friends
regarding a specific assignment/projects to make it error-free. The
result can be supported by the study conducted by Cheng (2016) which
notes that the growth and popularity of online social networks has
created a new world of collaboration and communication. More than a
billion individuals around the world are connected and networked
together to create, collaborate, and contribute their knowledge and
wisdom.

III. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY THE RESPONDENTS IN THE

IMPLEMENTATION OF PROJECT CHAT MO

Table 4

Table 4 presents the problems encountered in the implementation

of the project. Among the problems mentioned, most of the respondents
agreed that most of the time mobile data were slow with a highest
weighted mean of 4.78. Mobile data refers to mobile devices
accessing the Internet via a cellular system. (Dictionary.com)
Furthermore, Nielsen (2018) an Engineer at Sun Microsystem, affirmed
that website speed and page load times are so important to the online
reader. Response times are a matter of user experience. The reasons
behind delays do not matter to the user. A website that is responsive

and fast-loading makes the user feel empowered and in-control,

whereas long page loading time makes reader impatient, and frustrated.

Conclusions

1. Covid 19 brings numerous problems in the academe sector

specifically when face-to-face classes were suspended. Therefore,
educators must innovate ways and means to reach, communicate and
sustain learning that are accessible and less financially troublesome.
Bearing this in mind, the research developed Project CHAT MO.

2. As to problem 2, the respondents agreed on several aspects of the

projects in terms of reliability, functionality and accuracy. In general, it is
more likely that the project proves to be effective.

3. Majority of the respondents states that their primary encountered

problem was slow mobile data. Therefore, said predicament serves as a
barrier to the efficacy of the project that is irrepressible by the
researcher.

VI. RECOMMENDATIONS The findings of the study led the researcher to give the following
recommendations:
For Teachers: Must think “out of the box” for the welfare of learners in
the new normal curriculum.
For Parents: proper and regular monitoring of parents in the use of the
social network media by their children to protect them from obscenity,
pornography, internet bullying and addiction which tendencies may
seriously affect their studies.
