Lesson 1.1: History, nature, development and equipment’s

needed in basketball

Lesson Summary

In 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian of Scottish ancestry at Springfield College in

Massachusetts, created basketball. The game was designed to provide trainee YMCA leaders
at the International YMCA Training School an indoor experience. Originally, peach baskets
were nailed up as "goals" at either end of the gymnasium, thus the term "basketball."

Learning Outcomes
a. Recognize the history, nature and identify the equipment’s needed in playing basketball.

Discussion
I. Definition
Basketball
Basketball is a team sport played on a rectangular court by two teams of five players
each. The goal is to shoot a ball through a hoop and into the backboards at each end of the
court.
II. History
A. The Birthplace of Basketball
Basketball is built into the fabric of Springfield College. The game was invented by
Springfield College instructor and graduate student James Naismith in 1891, and has grown
into the worldwide athletic phenomenon we know it to be today.

B. Where basketball was invented?

Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in December 1891 in Springfield,
Massachusetts, to train young athletes through the frigid winter months. It was made out of
fruit baskets and a soccer ball. For the new game, he published 13 rules. He split his class of
eighteen into two groups of nine players each and began teaching them the fundamentals of
his new game. The objective of the game was to throw the basketball into the fruit baskets
nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. Every time a point was scored, the game was

halted so the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. After a while, the bottoms
of the fruit baskets were removed. The first public basketball game
was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.

The Year Basketball was Invented

The new game's popularity spread like wildfire. It was
an instant hit. Students brought the game to their YMCAs a few
weeks after it was created. The regulations were published in a
College magazine and circulated to YMCAs around the country.
Basketball was introduced to many other countries in a relatively
short period because of the College's well-represented international
student body. It was formally recognized as a permanent winter sport
in 1905 when high schools and universities began to promote the
new game.

Figure 1.
Where Basketball Originated?

It was the winter of 1891-1892. A group of agitated college students gathered in a

gymnasium at Springfield College (then known as the International YMCA Training School) in
Springfield, Massachusetts. The young guys had to be there; they had to participate in indoor
sports to burn off the energy that had accumulated since their football season ended. The
gymnasium class provided them with activities such as marching, calisthenics, and apparatus
work, but these were pale substitutes for the more exciting games of football and lacrosse
they played in warmer seasons.

III. Nature of Basketball

Basketball is a sport that is played by two teams of five players each. The objective of
the game is to accumulate more points than your opponent. From one player to another, the
ball is passed, tossed, bounced, batted, or rolled.

IV. Equipment’s needed

1. Ball
Official size of basketball measures 29.5” in
circumference and have a standard weight of 22 oz. Size 7
basketballs are the standard ball size for most men’s professional
basketball associations, as well as men’s college and high school
basketball leagues.

2. Basketball Court
The playing area of a basketball court is 91.86ft
(28m) in length and 49.21ft (15m) wide. Indoor courts
should be 22.96ft (7m) in height.

A basketball court is 91.86ft long and 49.21ft wide. The total playing area for a court is 4520.43
ft² and 7290.5ft² if run-offs and sidelines are required.

Sidelines
The outer edge of the court is denoted by the sidelines, which run the length of the
court. On a full-sized court, they measure 28m.

Baseline and end line

The terms baseline and end line both refer to the ends of the court running behind the
goals. Typically, they measure 15m.

The use of the different terms depends on the direction a team is playing. The end line
is the term for the end of the court which a team is defending, baseline is the for the attacking
end.

Middle court

This is the halfway mark on the court and is used to denote the offensive playing area
during a game.

On a full-sized court, the mid-court line would be 14m from each end line.

Centre Circle

Used for the opening tip-off, the center circle has a 3.6m diameter.

Three-point line

The three-point lines are the arcs that mark a range boundary from each hoop. Scoring
from outside this line is worth three points. The distance of the line will vary depending on the
level of the game but is typically 6.75m from the basket.

Free-throw line

The free-throw line, marked 4.6m from the backboard, is the mark at which a player
must stand when shooting free throws.

Free-throw circle

The free-throw circle is the same size as the center circle (3.6m in diameter).
Shooters must stay inside this circle when taking a free throw. The circle is also used for
jump balls.

Free throw lane lines/key

Lane lines run from the free throw line to the baseline, to form the 'key'. The shape
and width can vary depending on the level of the game, but FIBA (International Basketball
Federation) regulation changes in 2010 set it as a 4.9m by 5.8m rectangle. Some also
include space markings to keep opposing players from obstructing the free throw shooter.

3. Basketball Backboard and Rim Dimensions

Figure 4. Basketball Court and markings

For junior high, high school, NCAA, WNBA, NBA and FIBA, the rim is exactly 10 feet off
the ground. Rims at every level of play are 18 inches in diameter. Backboards are also the same
size at each of these levels. A regulation backboard measures 6 feet wide and 42 inches (3.5 feet)
tall.

4. Whistle
For the referees, they use whistle to blow as a signal for foul, violation dead ball, give
a command, or gather the players.
5. Game Clock
During a basketball game, the game clock maintains track of how much time is left in
the current half or quarter. The NBA and NCAA use different game clocks since the NCAA has
two 20-minute halves and the NBA has four 12-minute quarters.
6. Basketball Uniform
The most important requirement for every team is to have a uniform. The uniform
helps to recognized each team. It comprises of a jersey (shirt and shorts), sure name of each
players, and numbers on the back and front shirts that will serve as identification.
7. Shoes
When compared to running shoes, wearing a pair of shoes provides superior ankle
support. It should be a high-tip shoe that provides both comfort and high traction in playing
the game.
