REFLECTIONS

27
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY
ANG CHONG HIN (H20100976)

U4 REFLECTION (BEFORE)

In this task, there is a total of 10 people in a group. Well, a WhatsApp group was

formed afterward and everyone assigned with own task, and mine is Report writer. The

discussion was done and our group decided to talk about depression. My role is to summaries

everything relevant at the end of the day.

First of all, the biggest problem that I’m facing is that I was confused with the

assignment given as I’ve been in working life or more than 5 years and it’s hard for me to

cope with everything. But I'm thankful that with my friend's help, I was able to get an

overview of the assignment. Through the WhatsApp conversation, we have concluded to

spread the awareness of depression. I hope that everyone can work together and complete the

task.

Throughout this project, the skills that I’m expecting to gain is communication skill

which allows me to deliver the message to 3rd person. Furthermore, it allows me to obtain a

useful understanding and awareness of depression. Besides, this project also allows me to

develop my writing skills as evidence by writing an essay related to a specific topic. Good

writing skills can reflect a good understanding of the subject. The knowledge that I'm

expecting to gain gained the awareness on the important about depression. And whether the

depression is treatable or not. I’m also expecting that throughout this project I can be more

alert with surrounding people so that I can suggest them the solution when come to

depression.

U4 REFLECTION (AFTER)

Group work is a form of voluntary association of members benefiting from

cooperative learning that enhances the total output of the activity than when done

individually. Group work is sometimes difficult. Different people with different opinions may

not always agree with each other. Especially when dealing with people from different

backgrounds. However, my team works together to collect ideas from each other and

integrate them. At first, I felt a little confused about teamwork, but in the end, I felt as if we

were actually combining it. Initially, the team members were everywhere and had no

direction, but thanks to our chairman, we were able to catch our breath and thought that the

idea had become popular.

Overall, throughout this project, I gained the awareness on the important about

depression whereby if left untreated will lead to death. But fortunately, it is a treatable illness

as long as you looking for the right person to talk about it or go for psychotherapy. Every

person will get depression, that’s the fact. But it depends on how that person to go through it

and face with it. Depression can affect a person is many different ways and it can last for a

long period of time. Besides, I have also learned about sign and symptom of depression

which allows me to understand more about how a depression person feels like. I’ve also

29
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY
learned about there are several kinds of depression throughout this project. This knowledge

and skills will be so helpful to me in future which how to deal with people and collaborate

with a group of people. Besides, this project also allows me to mix well in our society and be

more aware about surrounding people.

CALYN ANNE TAN (H20100964)

U4 REFLECTION (BEFORE)

My group was made up of 10 people with a mixture of nursing, engineering and a

business student. Since the pandemic was ongoing, all our discussions and meetings were

done online. I am glad that all my group members were as productive as expected. Since

mental health was the biggest issue after the COVID- 19 pandemic, we brainstormed together

and decided to go on with a talk entitled, ‘Mental Health Awareness: Depression and

Suicide’. There were many suggestions as to having a survey to see the society’s mental

health status. I chose to be a vice secretary as I would love to write minutes and write reports

for my project.

In the next meeting, our group discussions were mainly focused on where to held the

talk. Some of our group members started becoming passive that we had a really hard time in

making decisions. They do not voice out their opinions and sometimes would leave open

discussions hanging. I was so glad that after setting a meeting that made them compulsory to

attend, the members actually turned up and showed some initiative in helping out with this

project. However, there were still some passive members in the group but nevertheless I was

glad the majority of them were on the same boat with me.

30
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY
Preparations were done and in alternate days we would communicate in the

WhatsApp group to clarify things and try to help each other out to complete the project. Some

of my group members would directly call me to share their ideas and some would voice them

out in the group. I was grateful for the feedbacks that the senior members have given when

there were flaws. I was glad to see us growing together as a group although we have not met

one another. As the day of the talk approached us, we started using social media platforms to

spread the word around. It was a blast as there were many promising responses and I was

really thankful for the support that my friends and family had for me in this project.

31
CALYN ANNE TAN (H20100964)

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY

U4 REFLECTION (AFTER)

26th November, 9.30pm the talk ended with a blast. Two speakers from the group

bravely opened up and shared their experiences during the talk. The talk was slightly delayed

as there were some technical errors. I was feeling nervous as I thought this talk would be

cancelled but thankfully it was immediately moved over. All I had to do was type out a notice

and spread them around as fast as I could to inform our audiences about the changes so they

will not miss the talk. It was an eye- opening talk as not only did I know what depression was

like, I also learnt on how to handle them. This U4 project definitely does not put its impact

just on the audiences but also to us who were hosting it.

I was really glad that the audience were fantastically enthusiastic with their questions.

As the live came to an end, we had a really heart- touching moment in our WhatsApp group. I

was really glad that all my efforts were acknowledged by my group members. I believed we

did this project together. Although at first, they were all passive and silent and only a yes or

no comes out occasionally from them, I was glad as time began to pass, there were more to

the parts of the project we had to complete with one another’s help and that has made us

communicate and establish a strong teamwork among us.

Although only two members spoke during the talk, I know that almost everyone has

done their fair share of their work before the talk even began. I felt although I was nagging

and dragging everyone almost every day to complete their tasks on time, I am really proud of

every and each one of us that we have done an astonishing job leading to a successful talk to

spread awareness. Now that the talk is over, I am at most focus on writing the meeting

minutes and also completing the last of the works left for this U4 project. Overall, I’m

32
thankful for my team, my lecturer and all the experiences I have gained throughout this

project.

PRATHASHINI A/P KUMARAVELU (H20100979)

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY

U4 REFLECTION (BEFORE)

This would be the first time I’m hearing about U4. I was a little nervous to attend the

class because there were almost 200 students in it. When our class were grouped with

engineering students, I was a little nervous as I have social anxiety but once we got to know

each other, I was quite at ease as they were approachable. We decided to do campaign based

on mental health awareness for our community service.

During this pandemic, depression has become a common mental issue in our

community, it is crucial to acknowledge this condition rather than ignoring it. Our society has

stigmatized mental health issues into something negative that people are scared to voice out

what they feel inside. We decide to go through this campaign to break the stigma and to instill

that it is okay to be upfront about their feelings. Everyone cooperated in doing their task

accordingly. The process in conducting this campaign is really enlightening. We decided to

use social media to conduct our campaign. I would really like to thank Ms.Agelyia to give us

the opportunity to conduct this campaign and it is a great platform to show our potential.

Initially we decided to do a webinar but since webinar usually done by a professional,

we decided to have a talk on depression and planned to hold our talk on 26 th Nov 2020.

Salinder and I had our rehearsal talk before the day. We had an eye-opening conversation on

our personal experiences and we learned a lot. Our group created some cool posters too to

promote our campaign. Hopefully every goes very well.

33
PRATHASHINI A/P KUMARAVELU (H20100979)

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY

U4 REFLECTION (AFTER)

So, the talk was done and dusted. We had a hiccup during our talk. Facebook was

having connection problem, so we quickly switched to Instagram and went through with talk.

I truly feel honoured to be an advocate for depression and we got a great response from the

audience. Depression is a touchy subject for me, to talk about it I had to brave myself and

openly talk about my experiences. It really made me to see myself in a different light. I was

really proud of myself looking back at how far I have come. This U4 project is truly a

blessing to me.

The audience were enthusiastic with their questions and also answering our questions

m at the comment section. As the live came to an end, it was really a relieve for me because I

was so nervous to put myself out there and be vulnerable. At the end my effort was rewarded

with the overwhelming response from my family and friends. I was so glad that I have a great

support system. After the talk we all appreciated each other for their effort into making it

happen among our group members. It truly would not happen if it wasn’t for the teamwork.

Although at first they were all passive and silent and barely a word response from them,

eventually there was a constructive communication established resulting in teamwork among

us.

One day, I wish to have the opportunity carry out a campaign similar to this physically

when the pandemic is over. Overall, I’m grateful my lecturer and team members for providing

me this wonderful experience that clearly benefitted me.

SALINDERJIT KAUR A/P HARI SINGH (H20100973)

34
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY

U4 REFLECTION (BEFORE)

“The most beautiful moments always seemed to accelerate and slip beyond one’s

grasp just when you want to hold onto them for as long as possible.” My indelible journey

through this campaign is finally coming to an end. It was naïve of me to underestimate my

ability to explore beyond set boundaries in which this project has undoubtedly transformed

me into a different person when I was first selected as the chairman of the project. Anyone

who has been in the same shoes would agree that in some way this idea of raising awareness

challenges them to push their limits and to overcome what was once their weakness.

The awareness campaign started off with a quote of “Learn from yesterday, live for

today and hope for tomorrow”. This quote left me thinking that there cannot be any health

without a healthy mind for a better tomorrow. There is no doubt that society is dynamic, and

it has changed its view on many of the issues with passing time. Mental health is one such

issue which were neglected for quite a long time until the rise of pandemic attack. This

relatively simple idea reached out to get my attention and hit me to my core. Soon, I started to

wonder myself, if this corona period is to be a big alarm, then it is definitely a wake-up call to

invest in human capacity with a holistic approach. So, first we created a group and started to

work on this issue. As we proceed, I was surprised to learn that there are different depression

stages. I also realized that whatever I learned from my Nursing subject was very much

interrelated with mental health too. Despite the post I carried was filled with tremendous

pride for my accomplishment in an initial semester, but that moment was short lived as the

actual realization of the daunting task of performing my role as organizing chairperson and

event manager kicked in. I couldn’t have made through without my peers.

U4 REFLECTION (AFTER)

There came a twist in this campaign, where it directed to a wonderful journey of

socializing, keeping track on peers, and the latest news that was going on around the world

together with raised concerns on own family members for mental health wellbeing especially.

My role could not have been carried out without their continuous guidance and wisdom while

making time to finalize the project. Here, I found the true meaning of life together with the

importance to really look through our circles where there might be someone who is in need of

help not in terms of luxuries but continuous emotional support. This project took a turning

point in making things an ease in my life as I learned how to solve matters effectively while

staying chill even if a single network problem can become overwhelming. ‘No pain, no gain.

Every cloud has a silver lining.’ This statement takes action in situations as I come to the end

of the mental health awareness campaign.

In the past, I used to wonder that doctors in the primary care is the first medical person

that patient will come and complaint about their depression symptoms or any other illness.

However, if most of the people are failed to be diagnosed, this brings upon large number of

undiagnosed depressed people which wasn’t seen as severe until the coronavirus outbreak. I

thought when better to start if not from the initial moment as a nursing student itself to

improve my knowledge and concepts for mental health practicum. Reflection allowed me to

improve the ability to move on, do better and to learn from experience through projects and

talks. “When you come to the edge of all that you know, you must believe one of two things:

There will be ground to stand. Or you will grow wings to fly.”

U4 REFLECTION (BEFORE)

I am Jason Lian from FECT, member of group 1 in engineering faculty. Before we

started our discussion, Salinder was our group leader. As during the RMCO period, our U4

event must be carries out online. So, we planned to make a live on the media social apps

about some awareness on mental health.

In our first meeting, the meeting started off with the selection of campaign committee

members. I was assigned to give assistance on Sharbhan for Publicity and IT. In the 2 nd

meeting, we came out with the title “The Behavior of Society Towards Mental Awareness:

Depression”. And we decided to run the live using Instagram app at 26 th November 2020, on

Thursday, time is 8pm-9pm. Then I started my work on assisting Sharbhan for the E-poster

editing to complete it before the talk.

After a few meetings, I have learnt that proper planning and discussion are the basis to

complete an event. The group leader allocates the tasks to every member. We cooperate with

each other to make the preparation done in order to make our event runs successfully. This

event may enhance the member relationships when we are trying hard to complete our tasks.

U4 REFLECTION (AFTER)

I am Jason Lian from FECT, member of the Awareness on depression event. After the

talk, the talk was interesting and carried out successfully by Pratha and Salinder. They shared

their knowledge and experiences about depression. I have gained a lot of knowledge on

depression from them and able to give some helps for my family, friends or some people who

was struggled with depression.

During this event, I learned a new skill on creating and editing posters since I never

had so much experience on touching this stuff. I was very thankful to have this chance to

learn poster editing with Sharbhan. This work make me understand that to completely done a

work, every tasks are important and not easily because without a complete task the work can’t

be done successfully.

Lastly, I have learnt how to work as a team efficiently, tolerance, comity, follow and

etc. It was a great experience for me because I am not really clear about depression before

this event. And all my group members are kinds, and reliable as they guide me sometimes

when I am having doubts. Finally, I would like to thank Ms. Agelyia to guide us throughout

the process and making our event to advance successfully. Thank you

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS : DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY

U4 REFLECTION (BEFORE)

MPU 3452 course is one of the SGFS courses taken by all students at AIMST

University. This semester we have been assigned to conduct a group case study on a mental

health depression. After getting this assignment, my teammates and I discussed and planned

to do a webinar and survey about mental health depression. While accepting this assignment,

I felt challenged because this is the first time, I did a survey and did not have extensive

experience in studying. However, the guidance given by my lecturer Mrs Agelyia Murugan

has injected enthusiasm to complete this task correctly.

38
Before surveying Mental Awareness: Depression, we have learnt what teamwork is.

Teamwork collaborates with a team to achieve a goal or complete a task most effectively.

The team members need to possess high intelligence so that they can interact with each other.

To conduct this survey, we as a team gathered information about depression; how it disturbs

the victim, and the kind of situation they have gone through. It enabled us a smoother path to

complete our survey and helped us to overcome the obstacles to understand about depression.

Then we were able to organise our tasks on a tight schedule. My team members and I

came up with multiple questions regarding depression. Creating questions also make an

important role. We created a simple question in short sentences to avoid ambiguity or

obscurity. Time management is essential in teamwork to use our time productively and

efficiently. Even though we have quizzes, tests, assignments, and mini-projects, we still

finished the questionnaire and collected the data without delay.

As in conclusion, I realise that teamwork is an essential skill whenever we do a group

task. Without this skill, the task may incomplete at the end of the day. Then, organising task

also a significant key that every single person needed. This skill may help to do work in

sequence and reduce stress while completing the work.

PAVITHRAN A/L GANESAN (E20030022)

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY

U4 REFLECTION (AFTER)

After completing the survey, each member must carefully and systematically provide

activity planning by the survey’s objectives and purpose. This is important to ensure that

every group member benefits and experiences useful responses from the survey. Discussions

need to do between the team member’s accordance with the members’ interests and abilities.

This is important to ensure that the planned activity is appropriate to be implemented and to

get a positive impact from the society.

39
The most significant part of this task is the respondent’s valuable time. We had a

difficult time to collect 190 responses in a short period. We used WhatsApp as a medium to

share our Google form link. We gathered our responses from all categories such as

youngsters, teenagers and adults. We targeted students, parents, employers and jobless to get

a good result. When analyzing this survey, we have been concluding that age is not a barrier

to depression. We visualized the data by presenting them in charts or graphs to get an

apparent reference.

Then, a report has made to explain the survey shortly and straightforwardly. A

successful survey has provided us with a reliable answer to the question. This allowed me to

take data-driven actions based on hard evidence. Being rational is crucial when it comes to

group work. Rational persuasion requires us to be genuine to conduct this survey. Next is

punctuality. We were able to complete our task without procrastinating the time given by the

lecturer and worked hard to produce an excellent result

In conclusion, based on the survey conducted on depression, we managed our time

well, effectively and systematically. The survey cost is free, as we did not spend a penny to

conduct this survey. We hope that all the responses and knowledge gained while conducting

this survey can be used or applied for future purposes.

I am Sharbhan Sivakumar from FECT, member of this mental healthness creating

crew. Our preparation for this event is almost comes to the end even though our event has not

been carried out yet. Our group held many meetings to ensure that our preparation is good

enough for this event to be carried out successfully. The beginning for this event was a bit

overwhelming as we have to vote in order to come out with a common mutual idea for this

40
event. Finally, everything comes to make sense several times of meeting as we gathered all

the information together.

First of all, I have learnt that a proper planning and discussion is definitely the basis

for an event to be succeeded. Our group president distribute task to each and everyone to do

their part. Moreover, we also collect money from all our members to do some buying foods

and payment for boat. Secondly, I have learnt to compromise when making a decision. We

always discussed with an open minded until we successfully come out with the best decision.

Our friendship is enhanced through this event as we used to spend more time with our

members during the preparation process. I really appreciate the opportunity to know and

understand my group members better through this event.

Last but not least, I would like to show my gratitude to our U4 advisor, Miss. Agelyia.

She is the one who always spend time to guide and lead us throughout this event. I hope we

can learn more with this. Thank you.

of experience. We were able to learn more about people. I found it quite intresting.

41
Secondly, as a part of publicity team,I created certain posters themed depression. I

learned new skills since I did not had much experince in creating posters. I would like to

thank my teammates for guiding me and encouraging me throughout the event.

Thridly, I learned a lot about depression and the ways to help people who struggles

with it. I beleive I have developed good understanding skills and how to be a helpful and kind

to each other.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience for me because I learnt a lot . From this event

I learnt to work efficiently with a team, to comprise, to lead, to listen and most of all to be

grateful for the life I had been given. I would like to thank Ms.Agelyia to aid and guide us

throughout the entire process and making and making this event a successful one. Thank you.

U4 REFLECTION (BEFORE)

As a student at Aimst University, my belief about myself as a learner when I took U4

in my second semester was a good one. All the activities connected to the course of U4 were

very important for my development as a student, researcher, and learner. When the subject

started, I thought it will be difficult for me as mostly the class will be conducted online. After

the briefing given by the lecturer, I can understand the aim of this subject. After forming a

group, we have some difficulties as we have to communicate mostly online with each other

and it ended up well. Firstly, we faced some difficulties to choose a subject to talk about as

we are going to do a webinar to create an awareness of an issue. We chose depression because

it is the second major issue in our country and we think this is the right time to talk about it.

Then, we had meetings and discussions totally online which could lead to misunderstandings.

Despite the misunderstandings, all of us handled it in a good manner which makes the work

more efficient. Day by day, I had a better understanding of the methodology and the structure

of this work. I did my part as a surveyor along with my friend and we have met some

42
challenges as well as we have to create proper survey questions and conduct the survey which

supports the research. After the survey results, we came to understand more about the topic

which we are going to talk about in our event. Then, the result also gave me a feeling of

satisfaction because it displays the respondent’s virtuousness in them as they are willing to

help the depressed. Furthermore, I came to learn more about depression and how society

copes with it. Moreover, I think it is more beneficial to work in a group as we can share ideas

and help each other which will make the work more productive and to do that we have to be

patient and cooperative minded.

U4 REFLECTION (AFTER)

For our work, we decided to do a live talk on social media. Despite the minor

technical issues during the live session, the talk went smoothly and ended up well. Hereafter,

I hope the audience gets to understand the message we are trying to convey as we try to create

an awareness about depression among our audience. Moreover, we were happy and proud of

what we have done after seeing the audience comments on the talk. Depression is a thing that

we have to be aware of right now as we can see the suicide cases all around the world are

increasing due to this pandemic and it could induce the stress level in us. At this time, we

should stand shoulder to shoulder with someone we know throughout their depressive state

and I’m happy that I have contributed something to create awareness among the people. Then,

all of the group members assigned to do a report based on their part and compile all of it into

one. In the meantime, we were also assigned to do peer evaluation based on our contribution

to this assessment. Then, after finishing the reports and peer evaluations based on our works,

I’ve felt relieved and slightly satisfied after what we have gone through this semester. Lastly,

43
I’m very fortunate to end this work with our group as I came to learn about leadership and

teamwork qualities from my group members which helped me go through this subject. I think

patience and a little bit of kindness in my group members helped me finish this coursework

smoothly.

U4 REFLECTION (BEFORE)

I was grateful enough to have seen and studied the making of the project and several

different sides of what goes into the project through my assignment experience with my u4

groupmates which I gave my roles more insight into different types of challenges and duties

that I could perform, as a group member. The first class of the U4 topic was held online and

the lecturer briefs us on the purpose of this topic. The lecturer assures that we are involved in

online classes and the lecturer also gives us the group assignment. Reflecting on the group

assignment and the first meeting for me and my group members, it was been a good

discussion among our team. We had discussions related to the task and then I was handed my

role to work on which they had asked me to do library research relating to the topic of

depression so that we can conduct a live social media session to raise awareness about mental

health issues to the public. I started to find the key points for the talk that will be helpful for

the speakers and without contradicting with survey results done by my group members.

Additionally, I have also done a dual role that the second role is for the Q/A section that to be

prepared with any questions that are bound to be received on the day of the webinar by the

audience. But unfortunately, the group members decided to do a talk rather than doing a

webinar because they felt that the webinar is for the professionals. Furthermore. I was happy

to contribute myself as much as I wanted to where I share suggestions and ideas with the

team. Moreover, I started researching for my assignment and I did my part as a researcher and

44
provided the key points to the speakers to be presented during the talk with statistics for

depression in Malaysia and from the World Health Organization. Following that, I realized

how much have learned and absorbed the knowledge on depression and this discovery

allowed me to share the information with my groupmates.

U4 REFLECTION (AFTER)

Later, related to the live session, we conduct our talk on social media and it all ended

great. Our goal is to reach the awareness of depression to them and as a team, we were

delighted and pleased after seeing the public feedback during the live session. One in five

people will be facing depression at some point in their lives. And with the coronavirus

pandemic and unstable economy, many are facing this trouble right now. Moreover, these

people need a piece of advice and hope from people who willing to help them. I am glad that I

have helped these people by creating awareness virtually to society on social media platforms

and I hope the audience gets the benefit from the speakers during the live session. After the

live session, we had a decent meeting about the talk. I have assigned by my groupmates to

send all the researches as an attachment that I have done regarding the topic. Meanwhile,

based on our commitment to this project, we were also assigned to fill the peer evaluations.

The research process and follow-up of this project provided me with a good opportunity not

only to learn about a depression topic but also to make a unique contribution to that topic. I

think I have made a meaningful contribution to the betterment of society. I had been happy to

finish the assignment along with my group members and I learn this project gave me a fresh

insight into group work and a chance to learn teamwork skills. The persistence and

encouragement from my teammates make me finish the assignment on time. I will appreciate

the effort that my team gave for the entire work and completed the assignment successfully.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: DEPRESSION AND THE SOCIETY

The live talk at Instagram on 26th November 2020 ended successfully. The speakers

delivered the content constructively. There were 187 viewers who participated actively during

the live. Some viewer named their question to clear their doubts or misunderstanding. Most

popular question inquired was about the 3 stages of depression and how can they help to

overcome them. The speakers answered the viewers questions clearly and positively.

Throughout the live session, participant received the information about how to overcome

depression in daily life. By doing this live on Instagram, the poster also has been shared in the

Instagram page and a word of mouth passed around of this event, in which there was a good

number of participants who turned up for the live event. Overall, the campaign was a success.

What is depression? Depression, also known as major depression, is a common and

serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, think, and act. Fortunately, it is

also treatable. Depression can cause you to feel sad and lose interest in any activities you

have enjoyed. It can cause various emotional and physical problems, and can reduce your

ability to do even simplest activities like waking up from bed and showering. In our society,

most people sometimes feel sad and depressed. Normal sadness will disappear by itself over

time. However, depression is completely different from a bad day. Depression can trigger any

event or event anytime, anywhere, and can last for a long time. For instance, when one loses a

loved one, move to a new place or have family problems. Depression may be accompanied by

another health problem. it can't just escape or overcome it by oneself. So, this is why

depression is a real health problem. People experience depression in different ways. Some can

hide their feelings and smile and go on with everyday life while some find it hard to even do a

simple task. Depression may interfere with our daily productivity. It may also affect

interpersonal relationships with the people around them like family and friends. Depression

48
can be also caused by a certain chronic health conditions like cancer, diabetes, lupus, and

AIDS.

As depression can be so difficult to understand with, it would look like a big tangled

ball of confusion. The speaker used the Storm to Sun Framework comprising of three "Zones"

which is considered from severe to mild one to give explanation on stages of depression

where people can figure themselves out of it. The storm zone is when your depression is at

worst. The speaker said that this zone is when it feels like a storm is raging in your mind

where simple tasks like getting out of bed or having shower feel like climbing a mountain. It

makes a person commonplace activity become unmanageable especially workplace where

they may seem miserable and hopeless. Here, overcoming depression can seem impossible

and further treatment is needed. Next, when you are in the rain zone, the intensity of

symptoms and ability to function normally is seemed to be equally moderate. This is because

the storm in mind has calmed down or not yet started. Consequently, the person finds it easier

to uphold their responsibilities in daily life. However, they are prone to snap others easily

when sees red and interacting with others often feels overwhelming. As a result, there's

always a risk of them to fall into storm zone if early precaution is not taken. On the other

hand, when person is in the cloud zone, they feel somehow 'normal' as their days are mildly

impacted by depression. Anyhow they can function without becoming tired easily and are still

able to socialize around without isolating themselves. In the cloud zone, a person motivation

is at highest where they can do things that have been putting off during the severe and mild

zone itself. At any point in time, they may find themselves in one of the three zones explained

by the speaker and how much time spent to understand each zone gives a clear indication of

how severe their depression can be.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a

fivetier model of human needs. In these day and age, most people around us have everything

they need to sustain their life, yet they still fall into depression. People who are in their 20’s is

49
more proven to be under depression and its known has quarter life crisis. This is the phase

where young adults try to determine their future. Some often gets sidetracked and lose their

sense of purpose. They would be very demotivated which very much leads to depression. The

hierarchy of needs model is suitable for evaluating the needs of patients with depression and

fulfilling their human potential. In addition, the stratified approach suggests that there will be

no progress on the highest needs of the model until the basic fears and needs of patients with

depression are addressed. Meeting these higher demands can be regarded as the ultimate goal

of treating depression. The levels of self-esteem and love/belonging are related to depression

patients. Due to the nature of depression, the person will feel low self-esteem, low self-

confidence and sense of accomplishment, and therefore cannot meet this need. In addition,

people with depression often become isolated and unsocial, and feel as if no one can

understand, love or care about them. Therefore, it will be difficult for them to meet the needs

of love and belonging. Consciously implementing Maslow’s hierarchy may increase the level

of motivation of people with depression, thereby improving outcomes. Maslow's hierarchy of

needs represents an important shift in psychology. Maslow’s humanistic psychology is not

concerned with abnormal behaviors and development, but with the development of healthy

individuals.

When a person who is in depression tries to talk about it someone, most of the

responders would be dismissive towards the feelings of the person in question. The dismissive

responds could be in the form of “are you crazy”, “just get over it”, “do not use your trauma

as an excuse, no one said life would be easy”, “you are so dramatic, snap out of it” and “you

are just lazy”. Some people stigmatize depression as a weakness, but we should remember

that one cannot simply get out of trouble by being strong or a fighter. Depression may require

long-term treatment. Most depression patients can be treated with medication, psychotherapy

or both. Some people also misinterpret depression as a sadness. What is the difference

between depression and sadness? Sadness is a natural emotion that every person faces at

50
stressful or somber times. Several live events can leave people feeling sad or unhappy.

However, when this sadness prolongs and there's no shoulder to cry on, the sadness takes a

turnover to something uncertain and unpredictable. Depression is not something that can be

detected by individuals experiencing it but it's an alteration of behavior seen by circle's

surrounding them. It has an overpowering effect on many parts of a person's life that can

occur to any age and gender. If a person can survive tomorrow, just survive today.

" That's the thing about depression. A human being can survive almost

everything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it

compounds daily, that it's impossible to ever see the end. The fog is like a cage without a

key," -Elizabeth Wurtzel

Instead of being dismissive about a person’s feelings, the responders could say a few

encourage word lift the person up. The speaker suggested words like “ you are not alone,

we’re in this together”, “I’m proud of you for being vulnerable and sharing your feelings with

me”, “I hope you know how strong you are fighting through this” and “I love you” shows

someone that they are not alone and adds light in their darker moments. It must be

remembered that depression can come and go without warning. When you do some small

things, unexpected great uplifting may happen, and the same thing will happen. Depression

has a variety of symptoms. Once these symptoms appear, attention should be paid to them.

People should normalize talking about their feelings to prevent depression. Teens who are

interested in curbing depression should consider the proposed solution because it will help

cure them. They should understand that depression is a mental illness that may destroy their

lives forever. The 'golden question' was introduced as a strategy to combat depression. At any

time if a person is struggling with negative thoughts, anxious worry or feelings of

hopelessness there's a simple yet powerful question that can be self-directed often works to

wonder which is "If my loved ones were in my position, would I be telling them the same

negative things that I'm currently telling myself like feeling of worthlessness? ". The reason

51
this technique can be so powerful is because it has the probability of distancing oneself from

any negative thoughts and diverting them giving a realization that they have been really hard

on themselves all this while. This strategy indirectly helps them to be fairer and kinder to

themselves. So, reason with yourself, when you have lost your reason.

Cultivating positive energy around us to overcome the depression. Energy is

everywhere, in everyone and every room. Even if you can't see it, it still exists. It is known

that the universe will return what we put forward. If one put negative energy out the universe

will give the negative energy back. Same goes to positivity as well. It is known as the ‘Law of

Attraction’. This is a life force; you can easily understand it according to your daily situation.

Our perception of the world is what creates our life experience. Through practice, dedication

and decision making, the world can be seen from the perspective of "what can be done right"

rather than "what can be done wrong". Negative emotions and experiences allow us to grow

and avoiding them does more harm than good. Practicing a "grateful attitude" is proven to be

one of the effective ways to develop positive emotions. If you are satisfied with life including

unpleasant life lessons, you can invite more positive energy into life. Counting our blessings

will increase the value of one cherish in life. The things you think and focus on will grow.

Energy flows to your attention. Although you can’t force yourself to have fun or experience

fun, you can push yourself to do it even if you don’t like it.. Even if your depression does not

disappear immediately, you will gradually feel more optimistic and energetic when you make

time for fun activities.

Else than that, the speaker also spoke about the 5-4-3-2-1 mindfulness technique to

help a person to calm down that begins with comfortable body positioning including sitting or

laying down, together with a proper breathing mechanism rationale to promote relaxation. In

addition, the speaker also emphasized on using senses which includes things that are seen,

felt, heard, smell and respond on emotions. Colors plays a vital role in life where it influences

person's perspective and emotions. So surrounding oneself with the right colors can help them

52
to improve mood, relieve stress and aids in getting a good night's sleep. Music can heal the

wounds, that medicine cannot touch. This statement showed that music has it's own healing

power where it makes up a positive and beneficial therapy especially in managing a host of

medical conditions like blood pressure. Practicing simple exercise of taking five things to see,

four things to feel, three things to hear, two things to smell and being mindful of one emotion,

can bridge the gap between us and our positive thoughts, and thus calming us down.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a large-scale traumatic event. It not only causes physical,

emotional and psychological distress for people infected with the virus. During COVID-19,

everyone is struggling in one way or another. Don't be afraid to ask for help or share your

experience with those around. When all uncertain things happen outside the house, keep the

indoors organized, predictable and clean. Setting up mental areas for daily activities can help

organize your day. For example, try not to eat in bed or work on the sofa as before—eat on

the kitchen table and work on the desk. Relaxing these boundaries will only throw your daily

work into chaos, and may make your day longer. In addition, a messy house may make you

feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic-so keep it tidy. Sleeping too much or too little,

skipping meals or exercise, and neglecting personal care will only contribute to your

depression. On the other hand, even if you get off work alone or off work, establishing and

maintaining routine tasks can add a touch of vitality to your day. Attempts include setting

exercise time, spending time outdoors, and communicating with friends every day.

To conclude, speaker ended the talk by giving the tools to make them feel better. 6

ways of making-self to feel better instantly was introduced. 15 minutes meditation was

recommended to calm their thoughts. Secondly, drinking more water in a day is encouraged

by the speaker especially right after we wake up. Thirdly, speaker instilled to eat healthy food

which known as higher frequency food to elevate our mood. Fourthly, the speaker to

recommended to exercise regularly as our body will activate biochemical release which will

make us feel good. Fifthly, the speaker advised the viewers to figure out what do they really

53
want and expand their boundaries to realize their true potential. Finally, the speaker advised

to plan their daily activities as it will give the viewers a sense of accomplishment.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This report is written as a replacement to complete a survey for MPU 3452 (U4 Activities)

course. This report was requested by course lecturer Mrs Agelyia Selvakumar. This survey’s

primary aim is to identify the respondents’ opinions on their mental awareness behaviors:

depression in society. The collected data has been gathering from 1st December to 20th

December 2020. The Methodology used to collect the data was through a questionnaire from

the date 10th November to 30th November 2020. The questionnaire distributed to 190 general

public in society.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A mental condition is a physical brain disease that disrupts thought, actions, energy, or

emotion, making it challenging to meet ordinary life demands. The study has been beginning

to discover the complex causes of these diseases, including biology, brain chemistry, brain

function, trauma or other medical conditions, such as heart disease.

There is no sure way to avoid mental wellbeing. However, taking measures to control stress,

improve resiliency, and raise low self-esteem will help keep symptoms under control if we have a

mental illness. Check with our doctor or therapist to learn what symptoms can cause. Have a plan

so that we know what to do if the signs return. If we note any symptom changes or thoughts,

please contact our doctor or therapist. Consider involving family members or friends to search for

warning signs. Do not miss checkups or skip primary care visits, particularly if do not feel well.

We may have a new health condition, which must be addressed, or we may suffer side effects of

medication. Mental disorders can be harder to treat if we wait for ominous signs. Long-term

preventive care can also help prevent symptoms from returning. It is necessary to have enough

sleep, healthy eating and regular physical activity. Try to keep the routine normal. Talk to

primary care provider if having sleep problems or diet and physical exercise problems.

64
1.2 OBJECTIVE

The study’s objective is to analyze the general public perception and their behaviors towards

mental awareness: Depression in Society.

1.3 METHODOLOGY

A Quantitative method was adopted in this study to gather a large size of information in a

short period. A formal list of questionnaires consists of 15 questions that have developed and

handed out to 190 respondents. The questionnaire consisted of two sections. Section A was

on the demographic information of the respondents. Section B had twelve questions regarding

the respondents’ perception of the general public’s mental awareness behaviors: depression in

society.

‘Excellent’ and ‘Not sure’ are 12.1%. Lastly, 9.2 % plumped for ‘Poor’. We can conclude that

most of the respondent’s mental health condition is in good condition.

CONCLUSION

From the survey that we took from 190 respondents for the past four weeks, we can get to

know our society’s mental awareness behaviors, mostly depression. Firstly, most of them are

aware of the mental health conditions, so it will be easier to determine if someone they know

82
faces any mental issues. We know that most of the respondents are not related to substance

abuse, indicating that they are not facing any serious mental issues. Other than that, we can

see that most of the respondents are getting support from friends when facing any mental

problem as most of them are students while still some among the respondents are getting none

of the support as it is worrying. Three-quarters of them feel unusually stressed out while at

work or university, mostly due to personal problems, financial issues, and project dues. On

the bright side, we get to know that most of the respondents are willing to listen and talk

things through with someone they knew when trying to tell about their mental problems,

which shows that society is aware of depression and is willing to help people are depressed.

We know that depression is a serious thing, but it is treatable if someone is willing to help

and support the depressed.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Be consciously aware of the symptoms of someone who is depressed.

2. Share with them what they want to tell you, and let them know that you’re concerned

about it and try to pursue them.

3. Try to encourage the depressed to get care or treatment and get them motivated.

83
4. Recommend their therapies or hotlines such as “Befrienders” and “MENTARI”.

Feedback : The saying " Rome wasn't built in a day, " shows that things are not usually done overnight but effort and time always enable a person to flourish making a project to it's perfection. It was a hard and bumpy road to make this event a
success. Most whom I gradded full has lots of meaningful contribution throughout the project without hesitation. Sharban, Pavithran, Prathashini and Calyn had their significant contribution to the event making it a complete success in a smooth
flow. When group task were divided to each member, besides those mentioned above, satish and sarvish also had some effort to get things done within the timeframe. However, Ang and Ramnath part was seen to be very nethical, irresponsible to
the task given and unorganized with least knowledgement either from both person in the group discussion and their part which considered to be important to the event -the report had to be redone by Prathashini and me myself. If to be seen they
had the least to no contribution at all, freeloaders are very much unacceptable as empel of time were given but, things we done by them at the eleventh hour. Overall, each member had their own opinion on the project making it a lively journey
upon completion.
