Lesson 2.3: Hallyu Culture

Learning Task/ Activity
In Philippine television, there are themes or plots that are recurring. For example, a poor female
haracter is actually the long lost daughter of a rich family. Do this with K-dramas. List at least 3
recurring themes or plots.
3 Recurring Themes or Plots
1.My Golden Life
Revolves around a woman who has a chance to rise in status and a man who
finds happiness in her.A mother's misguided love has caused her daughters to get
swapped in status, and so the heroine Seo Ji-an enters the chaebol household to have a
better life without knowing she is actually not their long-lost daughter, but her
"former twin" sister instead.

2.Reversal of Fate
That opportunity arose shortly after Bo-Young delivered her baby in the
hospital. Fate had it that Jung-Kil's wife Yong-Shim also gave birth to her baby in the
same hospital. Bo-Young then took advantage of the odd twist of fate and switched
their new born babies in order for her own daughter to grow up in an affluent family
and to exact revenge on the man who betrayed her and his wife who asaulted her. As
the two daughters grew up, Bo-Young felt indifference towards the girl she raised,
while wishing nothing but happiness for her true daughter.
3.Twinkle Twinkle
The success story of Han Jung-won (Kim Hyun-joo), a workaholic career
woman who is determined to make her own way in the world without the help of her
family, which has garnered considerable wealth from their publishing company.
But what Jung-won doesn't know is that because of the hospital's negligence, she was
switched at birth with another baby, Hwang Geum-ran (Lee Yoo-ri). The identity
swap resulted in the two girls being raised by families of different wealth and status,
and living a different fate.
Assessment
In an essay form, identify two things in which an average Filipino citizen can help
promote Philippine entertainment to the world. Allot one paragraph for each solution..
the paragrapgh should atleast 5 sentences.

Films are considered one of the popular forms of entertainment among Filipino.
Philippine Industry is somewhat like being losing its title because of the other
foreign countries' popular culture.

Filipino should often watch Philippine entertainment and help ensure the
viability of the local movie and television industry. The industry has been providing
the people not only entertainment but also employment and business opportunities,
also promoting culture and good moral values among the youth. We must create
strong linkages between the academe and the creative industry to generate
opportunities for arts graduates and workers to create more quality films to cater to
different audiences. Pirates and unscrupulous businesses have preyed on the fruits
of sweat, love, and labor of the local film industry we must support local and no to
illegal!

"Tangkilikin at Pagyamanin ang sariling atin." a phrase that every average

Filipino should know. We need to amplify the quality of Philippine Entertainment,
especially to our youth. If we are to uniquely identify ourselves as Filipinos, we
need more Filipino-made films and participate overseas.
