DAY 3- Literacy Development at Home

 Write each domain of literacy:


o Oral Language
o Vocabulary Development
o Auditory Perception
o Phonological Awareness

o Alphabet Knowledge
o Listening Comprehension
o Writing and Composing
o Attitude towards Language, Literacy and Literature
 Give a simple description of each domain.
 For each skill, give three to five activities that can be done by parents with their children
at home. Try to describe the activities briefly so that parents will know how to carry
them out at home.

1. Oral Language- refers to one’s knowledge of the structure, meanings and uses of
language.
Activities that parents can do:
a. Pretend play (e.g. bahay-bahayan, kids become chef etc.)
b. Talk about a picture ( let them say an idea/opinion)
c. Wordless picture books ( let them talk about the picture that has no words
and with adult prompting)
2. Vocabulary Development- refers to the knowledge of words and their meanings, in
either print or spoken form.
Activities that parents can do:
a. Playing games ( games that requires talking)
b. Singing songs ( let the children sing e.g. (Body Parts; Isang Munting Daliri)
c. Rhymes and Games( the children will say a rhyme and do some actions/tasks
e.g ‘Humawak ka ng bagay na kulay PUTI’)
3. Auditory Perception- refers to the environmental sounds
Activities that parents can do:
a. Playing musical instruments ( let the chidren listen)
b. Name the mistake ( let the child identify the wrong lyric in a song)
c. Clapping games ( listen and repeat how many claps I made)
4. Phonological Awareness – refers to the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in a
language.
Activities that parents can do:
 Word Level
a. ‘I will say a sentence. In every word I say, let us take a step.’
(e.g Kumain ka na. *3 steps)
 Syllable Level
a.‘How many syllables does the word ‘seven’ have? Clap your hands. * 2
claps)
b. Syllable blending (e.g pu-so =puso, ka-ba-yo=kabayo)
c. Syllable deletion (e.g kabayo, please remove the syllable ‘yo’=kaba)
d. Syllable Substitution (e.g kabayo, please remove ‘yo’ and replace with
‘do’ =kabado)
 Rhyme Level
a. Let the child listen to some words. If the last syllables sound the
same, they have rhyme (e.g basa;tasa, mata;tuta)
 Phoneme/Sound Level
a. Phonemic Isolation ( Listen and repeat the first/last sound of words
e.g. mangga, saging, avocado)
b. Phonemic Identity (What sound is the same in these words? –
batingaw, bapor, bisikleta */b/)
c. Phoneme Segmentation (Tap the table in every sound you hear in this
word ‘ aso’ *3 taps, ‘mata’ *4 taps)
d. Phonemic Deletion ( If I remove /p/ in puso, what word is formed?
*uso)
e. Phonemic Substitution (If we replace the sound /t/ in tasa with /l/, it
will become ‘lasa’)
f. Phonemic Blending (What word is formed when we blend /t//a//o/?
* tao)
5. Visual Perception – refers to the ability to make sense of what the eyes see.
Activities that parents can do:
a. Pares-pares (e.g. pair the socks, pair the leaves)
b. Pares-pares 2 (e.g. pair the pictures, memory game)
c. Spot the difference ( difference between 2 pictures)
6. Alphabet Knowledge – the ability to recognize, name and sound out all the upper and
lower case letters of the alphabet
Activities that parents can do:
a. Read a story emphasizing a certain letter (e.g Si Mario at Maria *Mm)
b. Ask what words begin with Mm in the story ( mais, manok, mesa etc)
c. Focus on the letter sounds /a//m//a/ *ama
7. Listening Comprehension- the ability to understand what one hears
Activities that parents can do:
a. Listening and following commands ( Kumuha ng lapis)
b. Draw and Tell (The parents tell a story during/while drawing the
picture)
c. Story time (Let the child listen, then ask questions after)
8. Writing and Composing – refers to the ability to formulate ideas into written text
Activities that parents can do:
a. Let the child draw what will happen next in a story ( Ano kaya ang
mangyari kung hindi tinulungan ng Daga ang Leon? *iguhit ang sagot)
b. Let the child compose their own stories, spellings ( inventive spelling)
c. Pictures can be young children’s way of showing that they can
compose ( let them draw)
9. Attitude towards Language, Literacy and Literature(3L’s) – refers to how one regards
the 3 L’s that are connected to learning
Activities that parents can do:
a. Expose the child to new vocabulary
b. Model reading behavior to the child
c. Allow for mistakes in the use of language but make sure to model its
correct usage
d. Acknowledge the time when the child reads
e. Let the children respond to what was read
