The first column is nouns that names
specific persons, places, or things and
these are called Proper Nouns. Proper
Nouns always start with capital letters
even if they are not situated at the
beginning of a sentence. Your own
name and the names of your friends are
proper nouns too.
The names of countries and their
peoplethe names of cities, buildings and
landmarks, the names of mountains,
rivers and lake, the days of the week
and months of the year and the names
of festivals, some special events and
holidays are also proper nouns.

Who can give me examples of names of

countries and their people?
*Ma’am! The country is
Australia and the people are
Australians.
*Ma’am, the country is
Philippines and the people are
Filipinos
*Ma’am, the country is Korea
Okay, very good! What about the and the people are Koreans
names of cities, buildings and
landmarks? Give me a local sample. *Ma’am! In cities the examples
are Baguio City, Vigan City,
Tagaytay City, and Bacolod
City.
*The examples of buildings
here in the Philippines are
Shangri-La, Ayala Tower, St.
Francis Square and Solaire
Resort and Casino.
*The examples of landmarks are
Luneta Park, Chocolate Hills,
Banaue Rice Terraces and
What about the names of mountains, Boracay.
rivers and lake?
*The examples of mountains
are Mount Pulag, Mount Apo,
Mount Pinatubo and Mayon.
*The examples rivers are Rio
Grande, Pasig River and
Cagayan River.
*The lakes here in the
Philippines are Taal Lake,
Laguna de Bay and Lake
Very good! Pinatubo.
You already know what are the days of
the week and months of the year right?
Okay, so what are the names of the *Yes, Ma’am
days of the week?
*Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
How about the months of the year? Saturday and Sunday

*January, February, March,

April, May…. (So on and so
What about the names of festivals, forth)
special events and holidays?
*Ma’am, in festivals we have
Ati-Atihan, sinulog,
Panagbenga and MassKara.
*In special events, we have
Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day
and Mother’s Day.
*And Ma’am, the holidays are
Very well said! Independence Day, Labor Day
The next column is names in general and Araw ng Kagitingan
terms. These are the opposite of proper
nouns and these are called Common
Nouns. Common Nouns are words used
to name general items rather than
specific ones.

For example:
The word Magazine; Magazine is a
Common Noun because it names
general term. If we put it in the first
column which is the proper nouns it
would be FHM Magazine,
Cosmopolitan, Metro, Candy or Yes
Magazine.
Did you get it?

What about the word Suit? *Yes, Ma’am!

*Ma’am, the word suit is also a

common noun because it names
general term. If we put it into
Proper noun, we should give
Very good! specific names like casual suit,
The third column contains nouns that fitted suit or formal suit.
can be perceived or experienced with
the 5 senses. Concrete nouns are words
used for actual things; you can touch,
see, taste, smell and hear – things you
interact with every day.
The fourth column is the opposite of
concrete nouns and these are called
Abstract Nouns. It cannot be identified
or perceived by the 5 senses. Abstract
nouns are conditions, qualities and
ideas.

For example:
Death and Future, these are Abstract
Nouns because it cannot be perceived
by our 5 senses, we cannot see, touch,
hear, smell or taste our death or future.
Did you get it?
So, who can give me an example of
abstract?
*Yes, Ma’am

*Freedom, love, anger, life.

Those are the examples of
Abstract noun because we
Very well said! cannot sense it with our 5
Abstract Nouns and Concrete Nouns senses.
are usually defined in terms of one
another. Abstract is something that
exists only in the mind while concrete
is something that can be interacted with
in a physical way.
The fifth column is nouns that are made
up of more than one word spoken
together to name one thing and these
are Compound Nouns. It is made from
two or more words but name one thing.
Compound nouns are written in
different ways.

Here are examples:

Bubble Bath
Station Wagon
Full Moon

Daughter-in-law
Hand-me-down
Dry-Cleaning

Blackboard
Handstand
Fireflies

Most compound nouns begin as

separated words. Over a long period of
time, more and more people start to
hyphenate the words. Finally, many
compound nouns come to be written as
one word.

Who can give me examples of

Collective Nouns?
*Washing Machine, Christmas
Tree and Swimming Pool as an
example of separated words.
*Dining-table, mother-in-law
and ex-president, ma’am are the
example of hyphenated words.
*Boyfriend, Bedroom,
sunglasses and toothbrush are
Excellent! the examples of combined
The last column is called Collective words.
Nouns. Collective nouns name a group
of people, animal, or things.

I have here a table which has three

columns. On the 1st column we have for
the group of people, on the 2nd column
for the group of animals and for the 3rd
column for the group of things. What
you are going to do is to put these
words to where it belongs. 1 word per

Words called articles are used to signal of fish suite of
nouns. Use an before words beginning rooms
with vowels (a,e,i,o,u)
For example:
An axe An envelope An igloo
An egg An ice cream An orange

But some words don’t follow this rule.

For example, use a (not an) before
these words that begin with u:
A uniform A university

Because the vowel u in these words is

pronounced like the word you.

Use a before words beginning with the

other letters of the alphabet, called
consonants.
For example:
A basket A house A monster
A car A rainbow A pillow

But some words don’t follow this rule.

For example, use an (not a) before
these words that begin with h:
An heir An honor
An hour

Because the consonant h in these words

is not pronounce.
