Has the Philippines
contained Covid-19?
Cebu City suggests
The Philippines this week claimed
success in containing the Covid-19
pandemic – but a spike in cases has
seen Cebu City emerge as a
potential new epicentre for the
country’s outbreak.
Presidential spokesman Harry
Roque on Monday said government
efforts had beaten a projection by
University of the Philippines
researchers that there would be
40,000 cases by the end of June.
The country currently has 38,805
cases, with 1,274 deaths from the
disease.
Roque said the “situation was
under control” and “the steps taken
by the government were correct”.
On March 16, the government
imposed a total lockdown on Metro
Manila that was only relaxed on
June 1. Movement in and out of the
capital remains restricted, most
mass transport is banned and many
businesses are closed.

The government wants all measures
in place to arrest the rising number
of COVID-19 cases in Cebu City and
in the country in general. Conducting
more tests for the disease is seen as
a way to deal with the problem
more effectively.
The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF)
for the Management of Emerging
Infectious Diseases is still evaluating
the situation in 12 barangays in Cebu
City with the most number of active
coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
cases.
This was according to lawyer Rey
Gealon, Cebu City spokesperson, as
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu
announced on Thursday, June 25,
that the 12 barangays would be
placed under hard lockdown.
