2 Waiting Sheds. Separate waiting area for the bus-stop and habal-habal (winged-
motorcycles)
Street lights. To provide light even in the most corner of the purok.
Garden. To lighten the area with flowers and provide a green environment.
Mr. Belamia mentioned that there were no huge conflict nor crisis he met during
his administration but just the occasional typhoon. The heavy rain and strong wind
became a concern because the area of the purok is surrounded with water- specifically,
it resides in the middle of a sapa or lake. Especially, since it already happened once that
a house was swept along from the strong current during the typhoon Yolanda.
Solution/Action Taken
As an action for the problem, The Purok President had announced that the
distance between the sapa and the house should measure at least five (5) meters to
prevent the water from coming in and to protect their house from further damage. He
had also put up warning signs to the most prone area, and announced that the nearest
evacuation center is always open in any case of emergency.
III. Message
“Be kind. That at whatever you do show kindness and help people. Isn’t that what a
leader should be, to lead people through helping them.”
-Mr. Belamia’s true to his character, he is brief and straight-forward.
The interview with a retired Purok President had aided my mind in the midst of
the complicated real-life definition of leadership. From the distance, you can
immediately see that he does not have an image of a leader. Ragged clothes, awkward
smile, and he wanders in the place like a troublemaker. I was even contemplating if its a
right choice to choose him for the interview, that if it was a right choice to choose him
as my leader. When the interview started, his answers were too brief and
straightforward, no hint of the typical lengthy but motivating speech like others shown
in festival programs. The atmosphere is even awkward, he has no shirt on, and he kept
rubbing his muddied hands as he avoids eye contact. I just didn’t understand how he
became the Purok President with an awkward stature. When the interview ended, I
observed that he had race to go out of the room, didn’t even bother to wash his hands,
from that little action I decided to stay for an observation. And that few minutes I’ve
observed him I realize that he truly is a leader, not like those wealthy and always-clean
with their suit on, but more agreeable. He was a retired leader, yet his previous projects
of gardening is still alive and blooming. Along with the volunteering residents, he was
there cutting the grass with them, often stopped by people asking him to help in their
house matters. He knows he has little to offer in terms of financial problems, but he is
humble, responsible, and offers help with no cost. He is not good in talking, but still, the
people admire and follow him.
In conclusion, I found that a true leader is not all about having the ability to
speak lengthy or flowery speeches. That sometimes, it could be about actions- the
ability to help people without expecting things in return. I misunderstood the definition
of leadership, which is to lead people through motivating them, I thought it’s all about
talking yet I found that you can also motivate people through means of actions.
