Week 1 Journal

Monday (5/10/2021): 8:00 am - 4:00 pm; 8 hours

Today was my first day starting my internship with Emory Hospital Johns Creek. I got to

the hospital around 7:30 then met with my internship coordinator, Maria Fernandez, at 8a. I met

with Elizabeth, a fellow GCSU intern, interning with Maria. I got settled in and got my email and

EHC Workspace account up and running. At 9:15 Maria took us down to Tier 3 Huddle which is

the daily meeting of all the heads of staff and important heads of units. We discuss issues that

might be occurring and find ways to solve the problems. They address all important hospital

population numbers and how many days since their last HAIs. I met with my supervisor Maggie

Whitson who is the Infection Prevention Manager. Maria then took Elizabeth and I on an entire

tour of the hospital which ended around 11am. At 11am I met back up with Maggie and her

counterpart Krystle who is also a major part of the Infection Prevention team and we talked

about my project and what all I would be working on then went on inspection rounds of the ER.

At noon I went up to my office space and did research on environmental cleaning services

protocols and possible ways of improving EHJC’s EVS workflow and training. I got off at 4pm

and went home.

Tuesday (5/11/2021): 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; 8 hours

Today I got in at 7:39 and worked on my computer until 10 when I met Krystle for

inspection rounds of the Oncology floor where we inspected their nursing station and supply

room for expired medical supplies. At 11 I went to classroom A where I helped set up for the

annual mask fit testing event. I helped clean hoods until 12:30 when I took a 5-minute break for

a quick lunch and then went back to cleaning hoods until 4pm. I then helped them pack up and

clean until 4:30pm and then went home.

Wednesday (5/12/2021): 8:00 am - 4:15 pm; 8 hours

Today I went on inspection rounds of construction zones on active floors to ensure that

all airducts were properly sealed and that the negative pressure was low enough to ensure less

contamination. I even got to suit up and enter the OR surgical floor to inspect the construction

barriers to ensure no contamination. I ate lunch at my desk where I continued to look at different

materials Maggie emailed me about A3 structured problem solving. I then helped with the mask

fit testing event where I translated for Spanish non-English speaking EVS staff who needed help

understanding the paperwork and what they were being asked by the individuals conducting the

test.

Thursday (5/13/2021): 8:00 am - 4:00 pm; 8 hours

Today I went on inspection rounds of brand-new Oncology 6th floor and the two new OR

rooms. The 6th floor was beautiful, probably the nicest hospital floor I’ve ever seen so were the

ORs they were also such beautiful rooms. Around noon I then went out to lunch with Elizabeth,

Maria, and couple of other women from HR for about an hour. I came back and had a

conversation with Maggie and Krystle about what I would be doing next week to better prepare

for it. I then went up to my office space and did research until 4 pm then went home.

Friday (5/14/2021): 6:30 am - 3:00 pm; 8.5 hours

I showed up early today and did some computer work until 7 where I then met with

Krystle to help set up for another round of fit testing for the N95 masks. There was a rush of

night shift doctors and nurses who had just gotten off at 7am who were falling asleep in chairs

waiting their turn. I went to Tire 3 Huddle at 9:15am where we covered all the information we

needed to know as a hospital. I then went back to helping fit testing until 12:30 when I went and

got free lunch (it was free because it was hospital week this week) in the café until 12:50. I went
to speak with Krystle until 2pm about some ideas I had for my project and then went back to

help fit test until 3pm and then went home.
