Week 10 Journals

Monday (7/12/2021): 7: 15 am - 4:00pm; 8 hours

This week my supervisor is on vacation so I was on my own when it came to getting stuff

done. I got in and worked on my multiple projects until 10:30. I then went to run an errand my

supervisor had asked me to do this week before she left last Friday. I got back to my desk and

worked there until 4pm when it was time to go home. It is so strange not having busy work to do

I feel as though something is missing.

Tuesday (7/13/2021): 7: 11 am - 5:15pm; 9 hours

I got in and set down my stuff and ran over to the Mother Baby unit to ask about

attending the UPC (Unit Practice Council) meeting. At 8am I headed to meeting room 3 to join

their meeting. I was there until 8:30 going over the ‘Who Cleans What’ checklist and then

headed back to my desk. I worked at my desk until 9:30 when another intern here at EJCH

(Brittany) came to ask me questions about the IV pumps. She had a meeting shortly after, but

wanted to do rounds with me on the floors to look at pumps on in-patient floors to see how dirty

they are and to get pictures for her A3 project. We met back up at 11:05 and headed to ICU, 3rd,

and 6th floor to look at pumps. We did this until 11:45 when she went to lunch. I had a working

lunch at my desk until 1:45. At 2pm I met up with Brittany to help her with her A3 project, give

her data, and ideas on what she should include in her project scope. We did this until 3:05pm and

I headed up to my desk to work and prepare for my meeting at 5. At 5 I joined the UPC meeting

for Labor and Delivery and spoke for 10 minutes about the goals with the ‘Who Cleans What’

checklist and the process it will go through to come to fruition.

Wednesday (7/14/2021): 7: 20 am - 4:00pm; 8 hours

I got in and worked at my desk until 10:15am when I met up with Brittany in the cafe to

talk about trying the ATP Tracer on the IV pumps to really see how clean they were getting. We

went to see Alex, who cleans the pumps, and asked if he had finished cleaning the IVs for his

shift that day, and he said “yes”. We decided that we needed dirty pumps which were not

available, so we decided to meet on Thursday when there were more pumps available. I go back

to my desk and answer some emails about attending the NICU Unit Practice Council meeting on

Thursday and make sure they have the appropriate documents to include in their agenda. I work

at my desk for the rest of the day having lunch while I work. At 4 I pack up my things and head

home.

Thursday (7/8/2021): 7: 19 am - 5:00pm; 9 hours

I worked at my desk until 9 and headed down to the EVS (Environmental Services) office

to go to huddle and ensure that the EVS supervisors were still going to meet with me at 10am. I

head back to my desk to retrieve my laptop for the meeting. We sit and talk about next steps

moving forward and what they would like to see happen in the future for their department. We

meet from 10-10:44. I then meet up with Brittany to perform ATP tracing on IV pumps to get

statistical data on a microscopic level of how clean the pumps truly are. We tested different

pumps until 12:06 and then parted ways for lunch. I had a working lunch at my desk, continuing

to work on my A3 and translating the ‘Who Cleans What’ and ‘Pre-cleaning’ checklists into

spanish. Around 1:30 I speak to my other sort of supervisor, Krystal, for a few minutes about

how the ATP Tracer went and then head back to my desk. I work on my documents and projects

until it's time for my 5pm meeting with the NICU Unit Practice Council.
Friday (7/2/2021):7: 26am - 4:00pm; 8 hours

I worked at my desk until 9:30 when I had a meeting with Chris from the Office of

Quality to help go over my A3 in preparation for my presentation to the board of the hospital on

Monday. We met from 9:30 until 10:35, and then I headed back to my desk to make his

suggested corrections. I had a working lunch at my desk from 12:05 until 12:45. I talked to

Maria who is another supervisor of mine within the HR department about certain data that I

needed for my A3 and to try and find a way to maybe tie in a part of the A3 she and the other

intern are working on. At 2pm I headed to the 4th floor to see if I could talk to one of their Unit

Practice Council chairs about the ‘Who Cleans What’ because I was unable to attend their

meeting due to their agenda being full. I talked to her until 2:30 and then headed back to my

desk. I worked at my desk until it was time to leave at 4.

Weekly Hours: 42

Total Hours to date: 385

This week I learned to take initiative and work alone without my supervisor. It was

difficult because she often gives me things to do to help her, but this week I only had my

documents to focus on. I also had to create meetings and lead project meetings myself until she

returns on Monday. It was nice to have time to focus on and finalize important parts of the

project this week. Desk work is hard. I think I need a career where I can be up and moving from

one thing to the next.
