Money has been a part of human history for almost 3,000 years. Money
is used for buying or selling goods, for measuring value and for
storing wealth.1 B
In primitive societies, a system of barter was used 2.A. Somebody
could exchange a sheep, for example, for anything in the market-
place that they considered to be of equal value. 3. C People needed
a more practical system of exchange, and various money systems
developed based on goods which the members of a society recognised
as having value. Cattle, grain, teeth, shells, feathers, skulls,
salt, elephant tusks and tobacco have all been used.
4.D This is because, when made into coins, they were
portable, durable, recognisable and divisible into larger and
smaller units of value. A coin is a piece of metal, usually disc-
shaped, which bears lettering, designs or numbers showing its value.
5.E However, most modem coins are based on face of value the value
that
governments choose to give them, irrespective of the actual mental
content. Coins have been made of gold (Au), nickel (Ni), silver
(Ag), copper (Cu), aluminium (Al), lead (PI), rinc (Zn), plastic,
and in China even from presses tea leaves.
Most governments now issue paper money in the form of note, which
are “really “promises to pay”. 6. H Cheques, banker’s cards, and
credit cards are being used increasingly and it is possible to
imagine a world where “money” in the form of coins and paper
currency will no longer be used. Even today, in the United States,
many places especially petrol stations will not accept cash at night
for security reasons.

A. It was a system of direct exchange of goods.

B. Money system has evolved from the origins of bartering to
modem money.
C. Barter, however, was a very unsatisfactory system because
people’s precise needs seldom coincided.
D. Precious metals gradually took over.
E. At the dawn of humanity, bartering was used in lieu of money
to buy goods.
F. Until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries coins were given
monetary worth based on the extract amount of metal contained in
them.
G. Gold and silver have been the most common forms of money
throughout history.
H. Paper money is obviously easier to handle and much more
convenient in the modern world.

There are many road accidents happened every day. You have seen one
of the accidents when you are in the car with your family.
In about 120 words, write a narrative about the accident. You may
use the notes below to help you.
The road accident
1 Where did the accident happen?
2 When did the accident happen?
3 How did the accident happened?
4 How did you feel?
5 Who was involved in the accident?

Write your essay.

I have seen many road accidents. The worst of them was one in which
three persons were involved. I still remember that accident very
clearly. That day, I was traveling in my father’s car on the way to
the tuition center. Suddenly, a car, running at great speed,
overtook our car. There was only one person in it, the driver
himself.
My father at once told me that very soon that car would cause an
accident. My father’s words were right and proved shortly. We found
the car inside a big river. It had crashed through the railings of
the bridge over that river. The driver was still trapped in the car.
No one tried to help him, though there was a big crowd around.
On the bridge itself, a young lady and a small girl were lying
unconscious with blood all over their bodies. The right hand of the
lady was missing and the girl’s head was badly injured. Their
bicycle was crushed. Soon, an ambulance arrived and took the lady
and girl to the hospital. There was a lot of blood on the bridge.
It was indeed a very ugly sight. I felt very sorry for all those who
were involved in the accident. But what actually happened to the man
in the car still remains a mystery to me.

With his khaki pants and black sweater, Irfan Khairi looks like any
other young man on the street. He is boyish and hardly looks like a
millionaire. Irfan's success story is something many of us dream of
but few attain.
He set up an online business when he was 22 and reaped his first

laid when he turned 18.
"My goal was to make my first million when I am 30. So I read

Irfan graduated in multimedia design from Staffordshire University
in the United Kingdom. While working in a multimedia company, he
decided to set up a part-time online business designing book covers,
posters and banners. A year later, he decided to pursue it full time
from home.
"Initially, there was no money to be made. I had only three
customers that first year. But business soon grew. Now I have about
40 customers a month. There are no limits or boundaries to online
business. You just have to understand the business and know how to
market it."

In 2005, he set up his company, Irfan Khairi 3dn Bhdt specialising in

Internet business training. Irfan was awarded the Yottng Achievers
Innovation Award. He has also written books, Secrets of Internet
Millionaires Revealed and Millionaires Notes.
"Starting an Internet business is something that unemployed
graduates should look into. It is simple and requires minimal funds.
I started my business with RM500".
So what did he do with his first million?

"I bought a house and a car. I don't believe in spending money on

unnecessary things. For me being wealthy is not how much one makes a

The volunteers also handed out coupons for the students.
The students queued outside the school to buy the books.
The Students Committee’s members were assigned to manage the stall
in groups of three. The winner of the game brought home extra
coupons and even hampers!
The clean-up was seen easy because everyone was helping each other
out.
Some of the stalls are handled by school societies such as English
Language Society. Teachers advised the students to stay calm and
move in an orderly manner to evacuate.
The School Canteen Day started on time at 8.00 a.m.
Hi friends! I’m Nurin. I (0) lives with my parents and my elder
sister, Mastura. We are very obedient
(1) child. Our parents love us and help us if we ask (2) they for
help. Our parents give us pocket money every week for our needs. My
sister (3) get more money because she studies at the college and she
needs more money for transport and for lunch. She also spends more
money (4) then I do. She often buys different rolls instead (5) off
lunch, thus she saves her money. But the saved money she spends (6)
at lipsticks, mascara, creams, shadows, and eyelashes. I think she
is a shopaholic because she buys something every day. As for me I
often try to (7) saving my pocket money. My parents have (8) buy
everything I need. But sometimes I want a slice of chocolate cake
and, of course, I buy it because I like it very much!

bus, bicycle and foot.
The results show that a majority of students'travel to school by
car. The second most used methocf of travelling to school is by
school bus. The third is walking from home. Lastly, students who
cycle to school rank the lowest.
Overall, more than half of the students in the survey rely on some

7 December, 1941. A day I will always remember. It was supposed to
be an ordinary day onboard the USS Nevada, a battleship.
I was getting ready for my routine duty of preparing breakfast for
the crew when a huge explosion shook the entire ship. Alarms went
on, and every sailor went into overdrive.

w "All hartds to battle stations! We are under attack! This is not a

drill!" This was real. The war had come to us. I had just joined the
navy. I only had my training behind me, and I prayed hard that it
was enough to allow me perform my duties well.
We took a major beating. In order to prevent the ship from sinking,
my captain ran the ship aground off Hospital Point.
Even though it was a terrifying day, we managed to pull through.
None of the sailors got serious injury. Three days after the attack,
the ship was repaired and back at sea, ready to serve.
