Sections in place
Short centre lines
Continuous thin Limits of partial or interrupted views and sections,
free hand if the limit is not a chain thin.
Continuous thin Long break line
(straight with
zigzags)
Dashed thick Surface treatment
Dashed thin Hidden lines

Lettering

The following are some of the guidelines for lettering in technical drawings:

1. Standard height for uppercase or capital letters and numerals according to the Bureau of
Indian Standards (BIS) is 1.8, 2.5, 3.5, 5, 6, 10, 14, 20 mm. The size for lettering is selected
according to the size of the drawing.
2. Drawing numbers, title block, and letters denoting the cutting planes and sections are
written in 10 mm size.
3. Drawing title is written in 7 mm size.
4. Hatching, subtitles, materials, dimensions, notes, etc., are written in 3.5 mm size.
5. Space between the lines is (4/10) h (h: height of capital letters).
6. Spacing between the characters is normally (1/10) h to (2/10) h, and the spacing between
the words is generally (6/10) h.

Single stroke upper case letters

Single stroke lower case letters

Numbers

3
Width (w) of single stroke capital letters

A w = (6/7) h

E, F, H, J, K, L, P, R w = (4/7) h

I w = 0.1 h

M w=h

W w = (9/7) h

Remaining w = (5/7) h

Numbers w = (5/7) h

Instructions to the drawing work

1. Place your drawing sheet (A1 size) over the drawing board (B1 size) with the
supporting sheet to result the smooth pencil work.
2. Fix the mini-drafter over the drawing board and sheet as per the given instructions.
Set your mini-drafter at zero mark to the drawing sheet but not the drawing board
to remove the error from the drafter.
3. Draw the boarder and title block as per the given instructions.
4. Plan your sheet area before starting the drawing as per your number of assigned
questions.
5. Differentiate the thick and thin lines on drawing by using different suitable grades
of pencils such as HB, H and 2H.
6. Scan your answers, merge into a single pdf file and upload at yours google
classroom.
7. Complete the sheet work within the scheduled time.

Lines and Lettering Exercise

1. Draw the types of lines with the description and application.

2. Draw the single stroke upper case letters from A to Z with the height of 20 mm.
3. Draw single stroke lower case letters from a to z with the height of 20 mm.
4. Draw the numbers from 0 to 9 with the height of 20 mm.
5. Draw the letters ENGINEERING DRAWING IS THE LANGUAGE OF
ENGINEERS with the height of 14 mm.
