Please note:

1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component –
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

problem statement/exercise/question

Preamble
This course deals with principles of AC and special Machines. Students are taught working,
design and performance of AC machines which include synchronous and induction machines
operating on single phase and three phases. Students are also introduced special types of electrical
machines.

PART A (10 Marks)

Preamble

Power Factor is the ratio between the useful power (kW) and apparent power (kVA) for
Alternating Current (AC) electrical equipment. It is a measure of how efficiently electrical power is
converted into useful work as output. The ideal power factor is unity. To improve the power factor,
it is necessary to adopt certain measures. Synchronous condenser and capacitor bank are normally
used in industrial applications. One of these could be considered as best suited for a given
application.

Debate on the topic

“Synchronous Condenser is more reliable than capacitor bank for improvement of power factor”

3
The debate should address the following:

A1.1. Review on both synchronous condenser and capacitor bank for improvement of
power factor

A1.2. Review on power factor improvement devices in RUAS Campus with specifications

A1.3. Suggestion of a suitable synchronous condenser in place of the existing power

factor improvement device in RUAS with ratings

A1.4. Comparison of the economic sustainability of synchronous condenser with the

existing power factor improvement device in RUAS

A1.5. Your stance with justification

PART B (40 Marks)

B.1. (10 Marks)

V and inverted V- curves for various loads of synchronous motor, are plots between armature
current with respect to field current. The curves illustrate the effect of the variation of field
excitation on armature current and power factor for typical shaft loads. Consider the data from
the lab experiment that performed by student
Address the following:

B1.1. Plot the V-curves for lagging, leading and unity power factors.
B1.2. Plot the inverted V- curves for lagging, leading and unity power factors.
B1.3. Interpret the plots obtained in B1.1 and B1.2

B.2. (10 Marks)

A three-phase star-connected synchronous generator is rated at 120 MVA, 13.2 kV, 0.8 power factor
lagging and 60 Hz. Its synchronous reactance is 0.9 Ω, and resistance can be neglected.
B2.1. Compute voltage regulation of synchronous generator.
B2.2. Compute voltage and apparent power rating of this generator, if it operates at ‘f’ Hz
with the same armature and field losses as it had at 60 Hz.
B2.3. Compute the voltage regulation of the generator at ‘f’.
B2.4. Critically comment on the results.
Note: Select appropriate frequencies of low, medium and high between 20 and 60 Hz. Consult the
course leader for approval.

B.3. (10 Marks)

4
In RUAS, backup power is supplied by diesel-generator ‘A’ which supplies a load of 250 kW at 0.85
power factor lag. Due to the extra infrastructure being added to RUAS campus, diesel-generator set
‘B’ is installed to share the load.

Address the following:

B3.1. By adjusting the fuel input to ‘A’, power output is adjusted to 6 kW and by changing
its excitation, the power factor is adjusted to 0.92 lag. Determine the power factor of
alternator ‘B’.
B3.2. For the same fuel input, excitation of ‘B’ is reduced to adjust the power factor to
0.92 lead, determine the new power factor of A.
B3.3. Comment on the results, with respect to the supply of fuel and power factor for the
two alternators ‘A’ and ‘B’.

B.4. (10 Marks)

A 14 pole, Y-connected, three-phase, water turbine generator rated at 120 MVA, 13.2 kV, ‘x’ power
factor operates at 60 Hz. Its direct-axis reactance is 0.62 Ω and its quadrature- axis reactance is 0.40
Ω. All rotational losses may be neglected.

B4.1. Compute internal generated voltage and voltage regulation of the generator at rated
values.
B4.2. Plot the power vs torque-angle (δ) for the generator and compute ‘δ’ at maximum
power.
B4.3. Compare maximum power obtained in B4.2 with the maximum power generated by
cylindrical rotor construction.
B4.4. Comment on the results obtained in B4.2 and B4.3 for lagging and leading power
factors.
Note: ‘x’ takes a value in the range from 0.2 to 0.95, lagging and leading. Consult the course leader
for approval.
