I. Objectives:
a. Give inference about the basic elements of poetry focusing on “Formalism”
b. Partake to the set activities through the presentation of their outputs
c. Realize the importance of Formalism in literary criticism

II. Subject Matter: “A Brief Introduction to Formalism and its basic elements”

Materials: multimedia presentation aids, manila papers, pen markers, envelops, index
cards
III. Procedure:
A. Motivation:
1. Start the class by having a 10 items spelling test
2. After checking the students’ answers, ask them how are those words related to
each other?

B. Presentation:
1. Tell the class that those words aforementioned are the basic elements of a
certain literary criticism
2. Introduce to them the lesson about “Formalism/A Brief Introduction to
Formalism and its basic elements”

C. Discussion:
a. Discuss to the class the introduction to formalism
b. Present to them the poem “In the Midst of Hardship” by Latiff Mohidin and
have them read it twice

c. Group Activity:
1. Divide the class into three groups and give each their assigned task
2. Give each group five minutes to prepare and have them present their
output by the group’s reporter afterwards
3. Remind each group to give examples about their assigned topic using
the poem that they have read
4. Wrap up students’ answers

D. Application:
1. With the same groupings from the previous activity, have the class perform the
ff. tasks:
Group1 = Compose a melody/tune. Then, using your corrected answers
from the previous activity as lyrics, present it through singing.
Group2 = Present a “cheerleading” performance using your corrected
answers from the previous activity as your piece.
Group3 = Have a “Readers Theater” presentation using your corrected
answers from the previous activity as your manuscript/piece.
