1. Introduction
The circuit-breaker pole discrepancy protection is an optional local protection function in the bay unit
of REB500, which supervises that the three circuit breaker poles open and close simultaneously. The
tripping condition is fulfilled, when at least one of the phase currents (amplitude) is higher than set-
ting (Imset) first tripping criterion and the difference between the phase currents (current amplitude dis-
crepancy) exceeds a given minimum second tripping criterion for the adjusted time. For conventional
substations (conventional c.t.´s) in addition to the current discrepancy-check, the circuit breaker in-
herent discrepancy supervision (discrepancy check of the c.b.-auxiliary contacts) has to be con-
nected to the REB500 bay unit third tripping criterion in order to avoid unwanted trips in case of open c.t.
circuits. Whenever the binary input signal “17710_Start_PDF” is assigned to a binary input of the bay
unit, the PDF function depends on the external input from the discrepancy check of the c.b.-auxiliary
contacts. If the signal is not assigned, the third criterion is automatically released and the PDF func-
tion trips, if the first and the second tripping criterion are fulfilled for the adjusted time.

Where single-phase auto-reclosure is being applied on a line, the time delay of the circuit-breaker
pole discrepancy protection must be set longer than the total auto-reclosure cycle time.

2. Terms/ Abbreviations

c.b. Æ Circuit Breaker

c.t. Æ Current Transformer
PDF Æ Pole Discrepancy Function
Pole Æ Circuit Breaker Pole (Phase)

3. Symbols

∆pd Æ Lower value out of ∆pd1, ∆pd2, ∆pd3

∆pd1 Æ discrepancy value phase L1
∆pd2 Æ discrepancy value phase L2
∆pd3 Æ discrepancy value phase L3
∆pdset Æ discrepancy factor (setting value REB500)
Ibmin Æ minimal service current of the bay
Imax Æ maximal amplitude out of │IL1│,│IL2│,│IL3│ (at maximal load- asymmetry)
Imset Æ minimal pick –up value for Imax -> operational limit of the PDF function (setting value
In Æ nominal current (primary side of c.t.)
tautorec Æ total auto-reclosure cycle time
tset Æ Time delay of PDF trip (setting value REB500)

4. Applications
The PDF function is seen as an optional function in the REB500 system. It shall be enabled only, if a
current discrepancy criterion is required in addition to the discrepancy-check for the c.b. auxiliary
contacts, or as a back-up function for the external PDF protection. Where the REB500 PDF applica-
tion is used as a back-up functionality, the time delay PDF REB500 must be set longer than the PDF
time delay of the main pole discrepancy protection system.

6.2. Calculation of the PDF delay time ( tdset )

t dset > t autorecl.

6.3. Calculation of the operational limit of the PDF function ( Imset )

The setting of each bay unit has to fulfil two requirements:

1.

I mset < I b min

2.

I mset > 0.1 * I n

If Ibmin < 0.1*In , the second requirement has a first priority.
