LESSON NO. 9

Soil Erosion, Soil Conservation

Multiple Choice Questions:

Tick () the right answer (Note:- only answers)

1. At the river banks 2. Above the non- porous rocks 3.Cover crops

4. Reforestation 5. Plastic bags 6. Deforestation

7. Kosi

Exercises

A. Write the word.

1. Soil 2. Top soil 3. Sandstorms 4. Deforestation

5. Reforestation 6. Terrace farming 7.River embankments

C. Do these in your notebook.

1. What is soil erosion? Why should it be prevented?

Ans:- The carrying away of soil by wind and water is called soil erosion.

It should be prevented because it makes fertile lands barren as the top soil, which
has minerals and humus is carried away.

2. How does wind cause soil erosion?

Prepared by: - Ms. Naveeda Page 1

Subject : - Science Class: - 5th

Ans:- Wind causes soil erosion by blowing the top layer of dry soil. It is worse in
areas where there are very few or no plants.

3. How does water cause soil erosion?

Ans:- When water flows it causes soil erosion by carrying soil with it. The stronger
and faster the flow of water is , the more soil erosion it causes.

4. Why is soil so important?

Ans:- Soil is important because it allows plants to grow. It also helps to store and
purify water. Moreover, it provides shelter to thousands of living beings.

5. How do steps cut on hillsides help in conserving soil?

Ans:- Steps cut on hillsides help in conserving soil in following ways:

i. Steps reduce the speed of flowing water.

ii. The soil eroded from one step gets deposited on the next step.

D. Explain in one or two sentences.

a) Cover crop:- Cover crops are the seasonal vegetables or fodder for
animals planted when the farmland is free.
b) Reforestation:- Planting of new trees is called reforestation.
c) Top soil:- The upper most layer of the soil is called top soil.
d) Non-biodegradable waste:- Materials that remain for a long time in
the environment, without getting decompose by any natural agents
is called non-biodegradable waste.

13. Diamond and rubies 14. Petroleum, diesel and kerosene

15. Ores

B. Do these in your notebook.

1. How are these rocks formed?

Ans:-

a) Igneous rocks:- Igneous rocks are formed when magma(molten rocks)

cools and crystallizes on the surface of earth.

Prepared by: - Ms. Naveeda Page 3

Subject : - Science Class: - 5th

b) Sedimentary rocks:- Sedimentary rocks are formed by the deposition of

small particles and subsequent cementation of mineral or organic particles on the
floor of oceans or other water bodies at the earth’s surface.

c) Metamorphic rocks:- Metamorphic rocks are formed by the physical or

chemical alteration by heat and pressure of an existing igneous or sedimentary
material into a denser form.

2. Why should we find alternative sources of energy? Give examples of such

sources.

Ans:- We need to find alternative sources of energy because fossil fuels are not
going to last forever. Moreover, they cause pollution when they are used. So,
alternative energy sources need to be used. Some of these are solar energy, wind
energy, water energy and geothermal energy.

3. What are fossils?

Ans:- Fossils are the remains or traces of ancient life that have been preserved by
natural processes. For example: shells, bones coal, microbes, etc.

4. Name some important metals extracted from the rocks.

Ans:- Some important metals extracted from the rocks are iron, copper, gold and
silver.

LESSON NO. 11

(The Moon and Eclipses)

Multiple Choice Questions:

Tick () on the right answer (Note:- only answers)

1. Man- made satellite 2. 1/4 3. Volcanoes 4. Dust storms

5. Air 6. 20 Kg 7. 28 days 8. 12 ½

9. the earth is in the middle of the sun and the moon

10. New moon

Exercises

A. Write 5 sentences to describe the moon.

Ans:- Following are the five sentences to describe the moon :

i. Moon is the only natural satellite of the earth which is permanent in the
solar system.
ii. It is made of dust, rocks and mountains.
iii. The moon is a barren, lifeless land with no plants or animals because of the
absence of air and water.
iv. There are no volcanoes on the moon.
v. The gravity of the moon is 1/6 of that of the earth.

B. Do these in your notebook.

1. How are tides caused?

Ans:- Tides are caused due to moon’s gravity. As the earth rotates, the moon’s
gravity acts on it and pulls.

2. Why cannot there be life on the moon?

Prepared by: - Ms. Naveeda Page 5

Subject : - Science Class: - 5th

Ans:- There cannot be life on the moon because of the absence of air and water.

3. How are artificial satellites helpful to us?

Ans:- Artificial satellites are helpful to us in many ways as they help in

communication, weather forecasting and space exploration.

4. Why should we not look at a solar eclipse?

Ans:- We should not look at a solar eclipse because at that time sun is not that
bright. If someone looks at it the rays can penetrate his eyes easily and damage
them.

5. Why are artificial satellites set beyond 300 kms from the earth?

Ans:- Because at that height, the earth’s gravity and atmosphere do not affect
them.

LESSON NO. 12

(The Atmosphere)
Multiple Choice Questions:

Tick () on the right answer (Note:- only answers)

1.Troposphere 2. Stratosphere 3. 21% 4. Nitrogen

5. has weight, occupies space and exerts pressure

6. The inside air pressure is more than the outside air pressure

7. in all directions 8. Oxygen 9. Dust and smoke

10. Earth’s gravity

Prepared by: - Ms. Naveeda Page 6

Subject : - Science Class: - 5th

Exercises

A. Write the word.

1. Ozone layer 2. meteors 3. exosphere 4.Troposphere

5. humid 6. Smoke and dust 7. oxygen 8. Weight,

space, pressure

B. Do these in your notebook.

1. What is atmosphere?

Ans:- A thick layer of air that surrounds the earth , is called the atmosphere.

2. Explain the three ways in which the atmosphere protects life on earth.

Ans:-The three ways in which the atmosphere protects life on earth are:

i. Atmosphere contains various gases that are necessary for living beings.
ii. It does not allow all the sun’s rays to enter during the day. So, the heat and
light are not too harsh.
iii. The gases present in the atmosphere also hold heat. So, the earth does not
get too cold.

3. What is troposphere?

Ans:- The layer nearest to the ground in which we live is called troposphere. It is
the densest layer.

4. What is air? What are the main gases in air?

Ans:- Air is a mixture of many gases. The main gases in air are nitrogen, oxygen
and other gases including carbon dioxide.

5. How does the ozone layer help us?

Ans:- Ozone layer blocks harmful radiations coming from sun and thus protects
living organisms living on earth.

Subject : - Science Class: - 5th

7. Why does a balloon burst when it is overfilled with air?

Ans:- Because the extra air inside the balloon exerts extra pressure on the walls of
the balloon. When this pressure becomes greater than the air pressure outside,
the balloon bursts.

8. Name a few things that work due to air pressure.

Ans:- Droppers, filling of syringes, straws are a few things that work due to air
pressure.
