CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Nowadays, many people become conscious when it becomes to their physical

appearance and skin care. They usually use many products to become more confident on
their looks. Dryness of the lip is the common problem of the people. That is why Lip Balm is
invented.

According to Lip Balm Now (2006), before modern Lip Balm was invented, people
still suffered from chapped lips. So it makes sense that they must have had some method to
deal with this affection. Here are few different that human kind used to protect their lips from
the sun and wind before lip balms are even today. Aside from those ingredients, beeswax can
also an ingredient to create a lip balm.

Beeswax, also called “Cera Alba”, is a natural wax produced by honey bees or Apis
mellifera. The wax is formed into scales into eight wax producing glands in the abdominal
segments of worker bee’s which discard it or in the hive. Beeswax is wed in many skin care
products because it provides a protection against irritation while still allowing the skin to
breathe. It also offers anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and antiviral benefits making it
helpful in treating skin irritation.

Utilized in a variety of skin care products, beeswax improves the condition of skin.
Beeswax locks in moisture, fosters cells, and protects skin from damaging environmental
factors, Beeswax effectively soften your skin and create a long lasting protective coating
against the elements. It is also a natural nourishing moisturizer as well as being anti-
inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-allergic and a germicidal anti–oxidant. The Mayo clinic
recommends lip balm made from beeswax for chapped lip care and prevention. Aside from
beeswax coconut oil can also be an ingredient for creating a lip balm.

Review of Related Literatures and Studies

This chapter shows the gathered literatures and studies related to the topic of the research which
strengthens the core study of the researchers.

Foreign Studies

Formulation and Evaluation of Organic Lip balm

According to Indo American Journal of Pharmaceutical Research (2019), the Lip balms are
formulations applied onto the lips to prevent drying and protect against adverse environmental
factors. Organic lip balms nourish the lips and helps protect from dryness and chapping. It
secures also the natural health and beauty of the lips.

Due to increasing public concern, on the presence of hazardous synthetic excipients in cosmetics,
new techniques are gained to produce products using organic sources. Chapped, dry or cracked
lips are very common beauty dilemma, particularly in harsh weather. Lips have no oil glands, so
they really need extra moisture and protection throughout the day. Organic word is the symbol of
safety in contrast to synthetic one which has adverse effects on human health. These ingredients
have medicinal properties that manifest beneficial topical actions and provides protection against
degenerative skin condition.

This study is connected to our research because it evaluates the effects of organic lip balm

Development and Processing Transfer of Lip Balm Products from

Virgin Coconut Oil

According to The Asian Conference on Sustainability. Energy & the Environment (2016),
Nowadays, consumers in Thailand and foreign countries have turned their attention to the
cosmetic products that are composed of natural extracts into their formulations. Skin on lip
called as Stratum corneum is different from another skin area with its rapider evaporating
moisture than face skin with twice times to gain the easy dried and chapped lip.

5
Lip balm is the cosmetics product with the main components as waxes, butters and oils from
natural extracts or synthesized ones with the objective to increase the moistures to the lip as well
as avoiding the peeling skin on lip

Coconut is accounted as the important economic plants of Thailand Similarly, it utilizes as a raw
material to produce virgin coconut oil. Currently, virgin coconut oil has plentifully attracted to
transform into cosmetic products due to the gentleness. for hypoallergenic properties. This would
be the option for consumers to choose natural extract products instead of raw materials from
other counties. Besides, this can increase the new products to communities and cosmetic
industrial market.

This study is connected to our research because coconut oil can also be a lip moisturizer.

Stability Evaluation of Organic Lip balm

According to Braz. J. Pharm. Sci. (Apr/June 2013) lip balm is a cosmetic product similar to
lipstick whose purpose is to prevent lip dryness and protect against adverse environmental
factors. The product's characteristics are resistance to temperature variations, pleasant flavor, and
innocuousness, smoothness during application, adherence and easy intentional removal. Lip
balm should not be considered equivalent to the lip gloss, with the former being a product
intended for use by both men and women.

This study is connected to our research because it implies that the purpose of lip balm is to
prevent your lips from dryness.

Foreign Literature

• The Best Tinted Lip Balms

According to Forbes Finds, lip balms deliver the best of both worlds: They'll keep your kisser
hydrated and add just enough color. "Tinted lip balms are a personal favorite because they
combine the nourishing, hydrating aspects of a lip balm with vibrant, beautiful hues," says Dr.
Whitney Bowe, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York and author of The Beauty of
Dirty Skin. "I often find lip products to be drying and I prefer to use natural ingredients on my
lips given that we are so likely to ingest some portion of the product throughout the day. Non-
irritating, nourishing lip balms are my go-to lip products when I'm spending the day at the office

or running to the gym for a quick workout." Just like any other beauty product, there are certain
ingredients you should look for in a lip balm to make the most out of it. (Celia Shatzman, 2019)

workout. Just like any other beauty product, there are certain Ingredients you should look for in a
lip balm to make the most out of it. (Celia Shatzman, 2019)

This literature is connected to our research because lip balm can add enough color to make a lip
balm.

• Benefits of Using Lip Balms

According to Themocracy Online News (2016), lip balm is a substance that resembles wax, and
it is applied on the lips of the mouth. The primary function of a lip balm is to protect the lips
against unfavorable external conditions. Lip balms help in preventing chapping of the lips, which
leads to cracking, bleeding and pain. The balm is inexpensive and convenient to carry around. It
is easy to acquire and put in the purse, desk drawer, or in the pocket when traveling.

Lip balm is essential to everyone even those who participate in outdoor sports. Lip balm can be
applied on the lips using a finger or directly if it is contained in a lipstick-style tube. Some of the
crazy benefits of using lip balm are Promotes fast

healing of the skin which means a lip balm is helpful in sealing the cracks that are visible on a
chapped mouth, Protection from the sun's rays, and Soothing effects. (Kevin Schultz, 2016).

This literature is related to our research because it states that Lip balms help in preventing
chapping of the lips, which leads to cracking, bleeding and pain.

• Your Guide to Chapped Lips

According to US News Health (2014), ff the eyes are window to the soul, the lips are the door.
And we don't need to tick off a list of reasons to properly convey why they're so important.
Which means that when they're chapped - when they're sore and rough and cracked and it hurts
to even smile - it's a problem. Our lip skin is much thinner than the skin on our backs and hands -
it's the "interface between the outside and our insides," says Barbara Reed, a clinical professor of
dermatology at the University of Colorado. Sometimes, even a simple move like licking our lips,
which feels natural, can wreak damage. "If you've ever seen a desert after rain comes, you know
the surface gets very flaky. The same thing happens to our lips," Reed says.

7
Wear lip balm daily - "literally around the clock," Reed says - and if you spend any time
outdoors, use a lip sunscreen with an SPF of 15 to 30, and reapply often. A word of caution,
though: If your lips are already chapped and cracked, shy away from chemical sunscreens that
could worsen the problem. (Angela Haupt, Staff Writter, 2014)

This literature is connected to our research because it advises us that licking your lips can also be
a reason for the dryness of your lips.

Local Studies

• Honey Balm: Bee Moisturized (Lip Balm)

According to a local study, Healthy lips represent the health of our body for our lips are one of
the most sensitive and environmentally susceptible parts of our body, not to mention that they are
the gate-keepers to the sensitive mucus membranes of the mouth; yet, many consumers
thoughtlessly purchase and use commercialized lip brands that not only contain harmful
ingredients but additionally, do nothing to naturally soften and protect the lips. So that is why it
is important to use an all-natural honey flavored lip balm. Worry no more, because we believe if
we have healthy lips, it will boost our confidence and also make us feel comfortable. (Leah Lyn
Jadap, 2014)

This study is related to our research because they used honey as a main ingredient while we used
beeswax as our main ingredient

• Feasibility Study (ACEDELAS Online Lip Balm and Cosmetics)

According to CBA BSA at University of Batangas cosmetics to women to enhance feminine

beauty ideals and serve to help women to conform to our society's beauty expectation. This
organic lip balm is healthy and does not contain any chemicals that cause drying of lips. It serves
as an initial exploration into the idea that confidence is achieved when physical appearance
matches the situation. (Asuncion, Renz Aynie, 2015)

This study is related to our research because they are creating an organic lip balm.

• Waxes Interesting information on the Origin and Background of Beeswax

8
According to Batangas State University 2014, Beeswax are a class of chemical compounds that
are plastic (malleable) near ambient temperatures. They are also a type of lipid.
Characteristically, they melt above 45 C (113 F) to give a low velocity liquid in water but soluble
in organic, nonpolar solvents. All waxes are organic compounds, both synthetic and naturally
occurring

This study is related to our research because we are to use beeswax as our organic ingredient.

Local Literature

• Smiles

According to Manila Bulletin, the lips get its natural tint due to the multiple blood vessels inside
it. And with colored Lip Balm, you can enhance its natural coloring while protecting it from the
external elements. Packed with shea butter, this lip balm assures eight-hour moisturization with a
set of colors to choose from. Inspired by the natural floral color, you can be that sweet girl in
blush and pink hue, or be bold and sensual in red and plum colors. Its subtle sheen also makes
the lips glow and appear even fuller (John Legaspi, 2019)

This literature is related to our research because we are developing lip balm.

Bye-bye, Dry Lips

According to Philstar Global, Lip balm with a gentle beeswax formulation makes it suitable even
for those with very sensitive lips while giving lips an extra kick of moisture.

Make it a habit to moisturize your lips every night. We religiously slather on our favorite face
creams but never neglect your lips. Our lips are some of the thinnest layers of skin on our body
and they don't secrete oil to keep them moisturized. It is important to use lip balm to moisturize
your lips. (Lucy Torres-Gomez, 2011).

The Literature is connected to our study because the main objective of our lip balm is to
moisturize lips, we also use beeswax as our main ingredient.
