Activity 2.2

Let A (4,0). Perform the given composition of rigid motions. Try to deduce
a single transformation equivalent to each of the given compositions.

1. a) R50  R20 (A)

Answer:

R50  R20 (A)

= R50  R20(4,0)

= R50 (R20 (4,0))

= R50 (4cos20o, 4sin20o) ≈ R50 (3.76, 1.37)

= (4cos(20o+50o), 4sin(20o+50o))

= (4cos70o, 4sin70o) ≈ 1.37, 3.76)

= R70 (4,0)

= R70 (A)

b) In general, R  R (A) =? (Optional)

R ° R (A) = R+ (A)

Answer:

T1, 2 T-3, 1 (A)

= T1, 2 T-3, 1 (4,0)

= T1, 2 (T-3, 1 (4,0))

= T1, 2 (1,1)

= (2,3)

b) In general, Tx, y Tw, z (A) =? (Optional)

c) ry=x  ry=1/3x (A)

Answer:

ry=x  ry=1/3x (A)

= ry=x  ry=1/3x (4,0)

= ry=x (ry=1/3x (4,0))

= ry=x (3.2, 2.4)

= (2.4, 3.2)

This is the same as a rotation about the point of intersection of the lines l and m

with an angel of rotation having a measure of twice the measure of the acute or right

angle between the two intersecting lines I and m.

So, 3.c can also be solved as follows:

ry=x  ry=1/3x (A)

R 1
= 2 tan
| ( )|
−1
1−

1 + ( 1)
3
1

(4,0)

R
= 2 tan
−1
( 12 )(4,0)
= R53.13 ° (4,0)

= (2.4, 3.2)

d) In general, ra  rb(A) =? (Optional)

Answer:

ra  rb(A)
= R twice the angle between lines a and b (A)
R m b−ma
= 2 tan
|
−1

1 + ( mb ) ( m a ) | (A)
