Topic 1. The Communication Process

Application:
Choose one situation which you have already experienced. Discuss how
communication helped in resolving the issue in the context you have chosen.
Situation 1: You have overspent your budgeted allowance for the week because
of unexpected expenses. Your mother usually does not give extra allowance.
Demonstrate how communication can help you persuade your mother to give
you additional budget.
The first time this happened to me was during my 1 st year in high school. I was
reluctant to ask my mother for an additional allowance because I misspent my
money on my favorite toy. Upon arriving at home that day, I immediately went
to the kitchen to look for food because I did not have the money to buy my
snacks. My mother felt that it was strange because she knows that I usually
eat snacks at school before going home. She then asked me why and I chose to
admit the truth. She said that it is understandable to be impulsive at my young
age but reminded me to be wiser especially when it comes to money and food.
She then asked me if how much the toy cost to recover my lost meal allowance.
In this case, it is really important to take advantage of communication because
it fuels understanding and good relationship. If I did not communicate well
with my mother, she will not have an idea of what happened and I might end
up getting hungry for the days remaining at school.
Feedback:
In the situation above, communication has helped me express my problem to
my mother. At that time, there is no other person to help me better than my
parents. A healthy relationship requires effective communication. To be
effective, communication entails talking and listening in equal measure. It is
important that a person is able to express his needs to someone and at the
same time be able to perceive the needs of others as well. In my case, I was
able to express what I need to my mother and listened to what she has to say
as well. It is a two-way process that needs the cooperation of both actors.
Topic 2. Types of Communication
Application:
“Which is more effective, verbal or non-verbal communication”
The effectiveness of the two types of communication is relative. It may depend
on the context and intended audience. However, results are better when both
are combined together. Interpretation of messages is easier and more accurate
when verbal and non-verbal communication complement each other. Non-
verbal gestures can elaborate on verbal messages to reinforce the information
sent.
Feedback:
Both verbal and non-verbal communication make a communication more
effective because of a certain degree of dependence between them. A verbal act
may depend for its correct interpretation entirely on a nonverbal act. Likewise,
a nonverbal act may depend for its correct interpretation entirely on a verbal
act. For example, using hand signals while talking to a person with difficulty in
hearing and smiling while expressing your admiration to a person with
difficulty in seeing. Each type may be used independently because of its own
features but combining the two makes the message clearer.
