Bir Polonyalıyı Şaşkına Çeviren
26.03.2016
Polish cultural anthropologist Kornelia Binicewicz travels back and forth between Krakow
and Istanbul. She researches women singers of the 60s and 70s. She publishes her findings
on her website. And that’s where the story begins ... On one of her trips to Istanbul,
Binicewicz was astonished upon hearing the song "Garip Anam [My Strange/Foreign
Mother]"…
araştıran Binicewicz duyduklarından sonra araştırmalarının büyük bölümünü Esmeray'a
Binicewicz buys the record which she found in a small music shop in Istanbul, then asked the
shopkeeper: "Who is this woman?" Binicewicz, who studies Turkish female musicians from
the 1960s to the 70s, dedicated a large portion of her work to Esmeray after having heard
her. She looks for her albums in Eminönü and in Kadıköy and purchased them one by one.
Her story is much more complicated
Binicewicz's understand of Esmeray is as follows: She has an enchanting/ mesmerising voice
similar to a jazz vocalist. Binicewicz states that the Turkish people remember Esmeray for
her song "Gel Tezkere Gel" “Come quick”, which she sang about military service. She adds,
"But his story is much more complicated."
Esmeray kariyerine 1960'larda bir aktris olarak başlamıştı. Oğlu Kaan Diriker bir röportajda
annesi için müziğin hep vazgeçilmez olduğunu söylemişti. Esmeray'ın evi müzik doluydu.
Klasik, caz, blues ve Türk sanat müziği.
Son Afro-Türkler
1949 Emirgan doğumlu olan Esmeray'ın ataları Faslı. Binicewicz Türklerin Esmeray'a "Afro-Türk"
Latest Afro-Turks
Esmeray was born in 1949 in Emirgan and her ancestors are Moroccan. Binicewicz states that
the Turks call Esmeray "Afro-Turk".
Afro-Turks landed in Istanbul with the slave trade as part of the great Ottoman immigration
movement. With the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, all minorities left behind were united
under a national identity. Afro-Turks also became a part of it.
Turkish writer and activist Mustafa Olpak African-based African descent living in Turkey, 2
thousand Turks stayed. Very few of them live in Istanbul.
She couldn’t believe she sang a song called Arap Kızı (Black Girl)
Binicewicz draws attention to Esmeray's song 13.5 (Arab Girl). She points how ironic the
lyrics of the song are, which were written by Şanar Yurdatapan in 1976, and adds, "Esmeray
describes what it means to be a black Turkish woman on a different level."
TRT censored
He mentions that he won TRT's Pinning Song Contest with his song "Forget Me" and emphasizes that
he wrote the song to his wife Semi Diriker. He tells in great surprise that Esmeray was included in the
banned singers list by TRT not long after this success. According to TRT, Esmeray's music is
inappropriate.
Esmeray demek...
The Polish cultural anthropologist completes his impressions with the knowledge that Esmeray died
in 2002 and summarizes Esmeray as follows. "Throughout his life he tried to tell his people how
important it was to be different in his country. He deserves respect and praise. He is also a social
equality ambassador," he says.
