11/12
LEARNING MODULE
GRADE LEVEL: 11/12
Technical and entrepreneurial skills are in demand nowadays. That is why most schools
train students to become more competitive by developing entrepreneurial skills and
competencies that will help you earn a living for your future. Dressmaking or garment
construction is one of the areas where students like you can engage in to become one future
entrepreneur. It is the main target of the K to 12 Program on the Department of Education.

For this week, this module provides the learners with the basic concepts and principles
of planning the design of a lady’s skirt. This will make them realize the start of their
dressmaking career. Also, this module will serve as the foundation for our learners' dressmaking
knowledge, attitude, and skills, which they will develop further as they finish high school.
Surely, it is a complete learning package that will give our young learners to build the
competencies they need to develop in the K to 12 Technology and Livelihood Education
Program.

PLAN GARMENT DESIGN

The skirt is a tube or cone-shaped garment that hangs from the waist and can be
worn on any occasion. Women today considered skirt as fashion garment because of
many choices when it comes to color, style, and length that suits to any size and figure.

All women agreed that wearing a skirt is more feminine looking and carries the
idea of being classy.

Kinds of Skirt:

A-Line Skirt is a basic skirt having a slight

flare with the rough shape of capital letter A. It
is narrow to broader while approaching the
hem.

Flared Skirt is an A-line skirt only with extra

flare which helps in covering fats over hips
and thighs. A flared skirt with large prints is
good for thin people as it gives a sexy
appearance.

Fit and Flare Skirt. The only flare starts not
from the waist but from the hips. This gives
emphasis on the hip curve and hides the lack
of hip curve.

Straight Skirt. This is a type of skirt that falls

from the hip. This is suitable to most ladies
but the appearance still varies depending on
the length, body shape, and waistline.

Pencil Skirt. This is a skirt that starts broad

on hips and narrower to the hem and just
above the knee. This skirt sometimes back
slit. This is suitable for women with a slim
figure as it accentuates the hips and the
buttoks.

Tube Skirt. This is the longer version of a

pencil skirt. The visible difference is that it
goes down below the knee. This skirt is
appropriate for those with a slim and skinny
figure.

Miniskirt. This is a type of skirt that can be
very short and gives emphasis on the
woman’s beautiful legs. This also can be worn
by short women since it elongates the legs.

Pleated skirt. The flare of the skirt is reduced

by the pleats and it fits the waist. It looks nice
on both slim and little plump figure.

Balloon Skirt. This is a bias or semi bias

one-piece skirt. It fits the waist and the flare
starts from the waist.

Layered skirt. This skirt has gathered on the

waist. The whole skirt tiered into pieces to
form a layer. This style broadens the hips and
makes the waist look narrower.

Take Body Measurement for Lady’s Skirt
Accurate patterns come from accurate body measurement and proper use of
measuring. Like other garments, you need to be careful in doing the task so as to get
the accurate measurements needed in constructing the skirt. Always make sure to get
the exact location of the waistline and hipline and checking the posture of the one being
measured which contributes to a well-fitted skirt.

Before you start taking body measurment, be sure to have in hand the following
tools and materials:

1. Tape measure which is the standard body measuring device.

2. Paper and pencil to record the needed body measurement
The following are some pointers in taking body measurements
a. Stand naturally when being measured
b. Do not take your own body measurement
c. Empty pockets, remove the belt and extra clothing before taking body
measurements
d. Follow the correct sequence in taking body measurements
e. Measurement should be taken snugly
f. Record down the measurement taken and make the necessary computation.
