LIFE OF PI – FILM REVIEW

Yann Martel’s Life of Pi is the story of a young man Pi Patel, a multireligious


Indian Boy, who survived a shipwreck and months in a life boat in the company
of a large Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker.
The movie starts with two characters – Late Irfan Khan as Pi Patel and a writer
who has come to Pi to get a story for his novel. Then, Pi Patel starts to tell the
story of his young age the scene shifts to flashback.
The plot is basically divided into 4 sections –
Firstly, Pi Patel ‘s childhood days – how he was trolled for name, his religious
beliefs, his first meet with Richard Parker.
Secondly, Pi Patel as a teenager – his meeting with Anandi, Patel Family’s
shifting to Canada with their animals in a ship.
Thirdly, The Shipwreck, Pi’s struggle amidst the ocean with the animals and
finally with the Bengal Tiger, Richard Parker.
Lastly, their arrival at Mexico Beach where Pi starts crying like a child because
he could not say goodbye to Richard Parker.
It goes credit to the Director Ang Lee Staring, who was able to extract a stellar
performance from Late. Irfan Khan as Pi Patel. The film has a good
cinematography and elaborate sets. The excellent camera work and digital
sound effect give a ‘true to life’ experience. So much so, that the one can
actually feel the emotion of Pi after the shipwreck. The screenplay, dialogue
delivery, costumes makeup and props, truly reflect the period of the tragedy.
The film is realistic and strikes the emotional chord of the viewers, some of
whom were moved to tears. The movie is filled with spiritual references, visual
poetry and questions having no definite answers but associated with a deep
inner meaning.
