For the second week of work immersion, Ms. Shakira Jane Orencio and Ms. Leila Rivera
from the College of Pharmacy made a discussion about the essence of pharmacy. They also
clarified and answered the students' queries in relation to this course.

The speakers' discussion started with an introduction about pharmacy's nature. This was
followed by Our Lady of Fatima's history and the College of Pharmacy's mission and vision. The
different curriculum and future career opportunities were also tackled as the discussion
progressed. The talk also highlighted the various accreditations and achievements of the
institution, and stated evidences and testimonies to support the claim that OLFU can provide the
best education for students who wish to pursue a pharmaceutical career

This week's immersion helped me a lot in having a better grasp of what being a pharmacist means. Moreover,
it cleared up the common misconception that pharmacists are only tasked with selling drugs and medicines.

Pharmacy as a course exposes us, students, to the different fields of study such as microbiology and
biochemistry, drug discovery and development, dosage forms and delivery, cosmetic products development, etc. to
provide and equip us with sufficient knowledge for us to utilize once we become licensed pharmacists.

I was enlightened to learn that full-pledged pharmacists also develop, regulate, and inspect different kinds of
medicine and that they even provide guidance for some health professionals to ensure people will get the right
medicine for their diseases. They also check whether the prescribed medications of the doctors are appropriate and are
of the right dosage. They even provide service in the cosmetic industry by studying and developing skin care and
makeup products, and by regulating and supervising the ingredients of the products to assure safety before releasing
them to the public. Pharmacists also check the ingredients of processed food that we consume.

By the end of the discussion, I came to acknowledge that Pharmacy is a good pre-med course offering a wide-
range area of learning, and various career paths and opportunities.
