Introduction
For our fourth week Dr. Ernesto Guevarra — the department head of the Biology department
— reminded me the time I struggled with biology in elementary school. Those were the days that
our science teacher kept on telling us to memorize the parts of the cell and functions. Back then I
had no idea what’s the purpose of memorizing these things. Now, I realized that memorizing cells
and its parts and functions are important since we, humans, are made out of cells.
Dr. Guevarra introduced us to Biology. He told that studying Biology provides in-depth
knowledge of the basic principles governing the science of life. He also informed us regarding the
subjects in BS Biology.
We were enlightened about the possible careers after graduating in BS Biology and Dr.
Guevarra even said that biology is a good pre-med course. He said that OLFU Valenzuela offers
good facilities and more than adequate learning resources.
There are a lot of exciting internal and external organizational and academic activities. He also
showed a video about animal dissection. He said that 4th year biology students usually do their
on-the-job training outside OLFU and most of this are government institutions.
The immersion ended with Dr. Guevarra answering the concerns and questions of the students.

Insights
BS Biology is indeed a complicated but fascinating course. It has a lot of interesting subjects and
specializations. Also, I was amazed with the fact that there are various and big opportunities in Biology
which includes being a biotechnologist, secondary school teacher, high education lecturer, marine
biologist, microbiologist, research scientist, and zoologist. I can see why they say BS Biology is a good pre-
med course. Clearly, having BS Biology as your pre-med since it has zoology, anatomy, microbiology,
virology, and biochemistry.
OLFU is a great university to study BS Biology. After seeing the pictures where BS Biology students
conduct their experiments— you can see why OLFU is the best university to enroll if you want to pursue BS
Biology. They provide excellent facilities and equipment for their students. I applaud the university for that.
I also learned about the different academic activities in BS Biology wherein biology students go to
different institutions and collect specimens. As someone who never experienced animal dissection, I was
astonished with the video that Dr. Guevarra showed to us. With the help of that video, I learned about the
anatomy of a frog and cat.
4th year biology students in OLFU Valenzuela do their on-the-job training in some government
institutions. OLFU has a lot of affiliations including Biodiversity Management Bureau, Bureau of Plant
Industry, National Museum of the Philippines, Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, Philippine Nuclear
Research Institute, and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic resources.
Overall, I realized that BS Biology is an interesting field and you’ll have fun studying it. I was not familiar
with the Biology field before our immersion and now, I’m glad I learned about this fascinating field.
